Despite the fact that the world’s largest low cost carrier Ryanair announced, in November last year, that it will commence flights from Birmingham to Rijeka the carrier has dumped the planed service. Flights were to commence on April 1. Talks between Rijeka Airport authorities and Ryanair seemed to have collapsed after the carrier did not receive concessions it wanted. Nevertheless other low cost carriers will operate to Rijeka this summer. They include Air Berlin from Nuremberg and Norwegian Air Shuttle from Oslo. Croatia Airlines will commence services to London-Heathrow Airport while the Swiss Helevetic Airways will commence operations to Rijeka’s Krk Airport from Zurich.
Latest available figures for eight of Europe’s biggest LCCs, shows that only two, Norwegian and Ryanair, have reported continued growth in all months since January 2008. Even Ryanair saw its legendary double-digit growth fall to just 7.6%.
