Sarajevo Airport to get new look
The new CEO of Sarajevo Airport, Ivica Veličan, has announced that the expansion of Sarajevo Airport’s terminal building will begin in the fall of 2012. The airport has secured a loan of 25 million Euros from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development which will be used to expand the terminal by 7.000 square metres, build a new apron and overhaul existing jetways. The final price tag of the project will amount to 32 million Euros. Veličan said, “The expansion of the terminal building will allow better quality service for our passengers and will improve our country’s image”. It was originally expected for work on the terminal to begin this year. While the airport is still functioning effectively, capacity constraints are starting to emerge at peak hours with security and duty free facilities in need of expansion. In 2005 Sarajevo Airport was named the best European airport to handle up to 1 million passengers. In July this year Sarajevo recorded strong growth. It handled a total of 81.042 passengers, an increase of 12%. However, in August, usually one of the busiest months of the year, Sarajevo Airport saw its figures slip by 2.8% compared to the same month last year. Contributing to towards the downward trend is the significant reduction in flights operated by B&H Airlines. The airport is hoping to handle 600.000 passengers by the end of the year.
Veličan also added that Sarajevo Airport is working to attract low cost airlines. Currently, only Germanwings and Norwegian Air Shuttle offer low cost flights to the Bosnian capital. However, according to some sources, Wizz Air has expressed interest to commence flights to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tuzla is hoping that it will bag the low cost airline ahead of Sarajevo.
I flew from/to SJJ and very nice experience for an airport of that capacity.
ReplyDeleteHope numbers will grow.
For the Nth time, please do not classify Germanwings or their flights as low-cost.
ReplyDeletePerhaps, low-cost to them, but hight cost to passengers.
When will shitty airport of Belgrade release its statistics for august ?!
ReplyDeleteIn the last months they released them already on the 5th day of the month...but now we are nearly end of september.
I fear we will see numbers of september earliest next year .
Either they dont know their numbers and/or they are still inventing them.
And what is going on with that flydubai ?
Someone said we will get all infos end of this week. I suspect we will get them NEVER !

ReplyDeleteLike I said before August numbers are up by 7%, it was even published in Blic some weeks ago.
Regarding these airlines and their August performance here it is:
- Niki:
August: 69%
2011: -3%
loadfactor in 2011: 54%
- Belgrade-Rome:
Alitalia pax numbers:
2011: +4%
August: -14%
Jat's pax numbers:
2011: +17%
August: +18%
average lf August: 65%
Wizz's pax numbers:
August loadfactor: 83%
They haven't operated the route for a year now in order to make the other statistics.
Also, recently I have published W6's August results, can't be bothered to look for them now. All I remember is that their average lf for August was 89%.
Do you guys mind sharing the information on BEG on other articles related to BEG or Serbia, which do come out nearly every other day, and not do that on SJJ related articles which appear quite rarely?
ReplyDeleteWell, we don't have that much choice since people are not contributing to the talk about Sarajevo ... so we are moving to a topic that wants to be discussed.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous above.
ReplyDeleteLack of good / civilized manners and primitivism are obvious every day in regard the subject you explained.

ReplyDeleteThe moderator should delete all comments with greetings especially since this forum is in English officially and greetings have nothing to do with aviation.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the topic is concerned it is great to hear that another of the regions airports will be getting needed upgrades. We need to support these efforts instead of tearing one another down.
