Trade unions slam Paris takeover

Unions unhappy with Zagreb concession
Trade unions at Zagreb Airport have angrily reacted to the government’s decision to award a concession for Croatia’s busiest airport to Aéroports de Paris. The French are to run Zagreb Airport for the next thirty years and build a multi million euro terminal. Unions say that the entire concession model is unsustainable. The head of the union representing Zagreb Airport employees, Ante Dujić, said at a press conference that workers expected the government to terminate the tender procedure because the concession will harm the airport and its employees. He added that Zagreb Airport has the means to fund the expansion project itself.

The union claims that estimates for Zagreb Airport to handle up to 8.5 million passengers annually, as outlined by Aérports de Paris, are inaccurate. They warn that during the past month two airlines operating flights to Zagreb have declared bankruptcy while Croatia Airlines itself is on shaky grounds. Unions are now requesting an urgent meeting with the government and warn that industrial action could be taken if their concerns are not acknowledged. “The commission which decided to award the concession had no time to review the documentation in order to bring a proper decision. There is a problem and our destinies depend on its resolution”, Dujić said.

Aéroports de Paris, which bid under the name Zagreb Airport International, will build the new terminal at Zagreb from scratch and pay 87 million euros in concession fees over the next three decades. The new terminal should be in use by 2015. The offer by Aéroports de Paris outlines that during the first phase of the project a new terminal will be built with the capacity to handle five million passengers.

Ah here we go... I knew it was too good to be true.

I wonder what will happen now.

  2. One of the best comments by the Union was that they can build and manage the new airport better than the French consortium!!!
Wow, I imagine all those people at the check in counters, technicians, people punching your ticket before you enter the plane, etc., running the new airport and I then start to laugh uncontrollably...
    Unbelievable!!!
But I am not too worried about it. They can shout and protest all they want but in the end it will be Cacic who will decide and he is not a man to f**k with.
See what happened with milk producers recently? THey were loud, protested and blocked the roads for 2 weeks and in the end had to go home without ANYTHING! The new government is not an easy nut too crack.
The Union will be loud but in the end they will have to drastically change their behavior in order to keep their jobs.

    1. Damien - word. couldn't have said this better.

Those union a...oles couldn't manage a herd of sheep, let alone build something.

The results of their involvement for the past 40+ years are: "the strachara building" and obstruction of OU and other companies trying to expand # of planes and flights (manage the schedule in the peak summer hours).

I really hope they do not go belly up till then.
The new route will be a success.
Every route from Belgrade is a success.

The Spanair route to Barcelona was also a success..unfortunately the airline self was not.

  4. I think the comment from the 'commos' I mean unions here sums up perfectly why a company which has profits and expansion as a goal is needed to run Zagreb and not some backward cold war era budale who should be ashamed to call themselves Croatians!

    1. Have to consider the bigger picture here.

Zagreb AP in its current situation and the 19 mil benefits only Zagreb AP and is affiliations. The unions based on their comment have surrendered any ambition for further expansion and seem to be happy for others (Zagreb airports competitors) to profit on Croatia relative international success where Zagreb is in line to really cash in if they take the opportunity instead. Regardless of the outcome, the original tender saw no fewer than 10 interested parties from all over the globe. This is an indication on how successful Zagreb could be.
Also, the figure of 8 million pax as forecast by the French consortium by 2030 is could possibly be a way for them to get the best deal possible for themselves, in other words maybe they forecast a much larger number.

Again, placing the airport in the hands of a business which would like to see the best possible return on its investment can only be a positive move for all of Zagreb thus Croatia and not just the airport!

New terminal capacity is 8 mil does not mean that it will reach max anytime soon. And to be realistic, BUD has 8.5 in its best years, we will not see 8 mil in ZAG anytime. No airport in ex yu can reach that figure (unless somebody close all roads around).

Jat Airways has signed an agreement with the Swedish company, based in London, Nickes.com

The airlines has added a new tab on its site called Travel Shop through which you access the special fares/rates for various sports events around Europe.

I think this is a very smart move by the airline to fight lowcosts and competition.

By the way I received this through their newsletter!

Unions at the LDZE are same sort of "hard working" employees as Radio Taxi Zagreb.
These are socialist relics who can work lot less than they could be paid.
French are going to hire new work force for the new terminal and lot of these "lezilebovics" will not be taken into consideration. It is worth to pay compensation for each fired out such worker. This would definitely improve professionalism at LDZA
