April deadline unlikely to be met
Construction of Zagreb Airport’s much awaited new terminal is unlikely to begin by mid 2013 while rumours continue to spread that the airport operator, Aéroports de Paris, will back out from the project entirely. The operator still hasn’t gathered enough finances to fund the multi million euro terminal building. Furthermore, Aéroports de Paris still hasn’t secured ownership of the land surrounding the airport, applied for a building permit or come to an agreement with the military over the relocation of security infrastructure based in the area. The project is expected to total 236 million euros. According to the concession contract, signed with the Croatian government, the airport’s new operators are obliged to begin construction by April 11, 2013 at the latest. Aéroports de Paris insists that the original time frame outlined in the contract was “too optimistic”. While the Croatian government can sanction or even terminate their contract with Aéroports, local media report that such a move is highly unlikely as it could jeopardise the ratification of the country’s European Union accession agreement.
The Croatian government is not alarmed by the expected delays. It says it has its own expansion project ready if the French opt out. The tender, which saw Aéroports de Paris win the thirty year concession, was highly controversial itself and delayed several times. The recently appointed new CEO of Zagreb Airport, Miroslav Drljača, has voiced his opposition to the concession with the French.
Despite the delays, the architectural design of the new terminal has been finalised, though it is yet to be revealed to the public. Once construction starts, it must be completed within 1.095 days. Plans to build a new terminal at Zagreb Airport have been ongoing for years.
Newspaper dirt is all this is (Jutarnji list had reported this on Friday). Things are progressing one step at a time. This information comes directly from a person who's working in ZAIC.
ReplyDeleteZagreb is cool about possible problem with ZAIC. If ADPI can not work out the contract Republic of Croatia will terminate contract and with money from penalty will build new terminal by itself.
ReplyDeleteAh well, this is normal, if the same scenario was in a other balkan country there would be the same story and crapp all over again.
ReplyDeleteThe ground of the landowners next to the airport is worth nothing, but they will still ask for 10 times the real vallue because they know airport dont have any other options than to pay.. or go to court and that can take months extra 2.
It's not worth anything? ok then. it's not for sale.
Deleteha ha. I'd say it is worth something
We are talking about the fields next to the airport, not the houses near it. What are fields with potatos worth outside the city centar? not much or nothing special :)
DeleteIt's a normal thing to do, when you know that the airport must have it or they cant do nothing, to squeeze every penny out of it. Zag can sue them for asking for a not reasonible price conform the market-falue in the region, but that thakes allot of time and you get even more delayes.
When you buy someone out, you pay the market price or 1.5/2 times the vallue + something more/extra's. But then they start asking for 5/10 times the vallue.. it gets nice.
Staged to kick out the french and run it on their own Mafia from Hercegovina people. It would have been too professional if Europeans would have run an efficent company. So, similar to Sarajavo, they could go on with emplying their cousins and aunts from Livo and Tomislavgrad.

DeleteRegarding the land issues around the airport, why doesn't the Croatian Government seize the required land then compensate the former land owners the same way the English are going to do in London were they plan to build the third runway for Heathrow? In this case the land owners cannot make irresponsible demands on how much they want for there land.
ReplyDeleteLooks like the race is still on who gets there first, Zagreb's new terminal and Jats new planes.
You complain about 9 year old Airbusses but yu would rather fly boeings that are 27 years old? Do you know how stupid that sounds?
Deleteget real dude.
Well Zagreb airport's appearance is as modern as Jat's fleet so..
DeleteWe all know that, but thats normal for the airports age. Only the smartass who deleted his comment was talkink crap about the planes.
DeleteBelgrade airport was opened in 1962 and it doesn't show its age the least bit. Sorry, your argument is retarded.
DeleteNobody is pushying you to fly jat. You have a good selection in BEG.
DeleteWell put and it is not about age, it is about if you have the infrastructure or you dont. stop sugarcoating big setback.
DeleteI read some funny plans for PAX numbers. I laughed :)
ReplyDeleteOT: yesterday I flew with Darwin Saab 2000 zrh-ini, we were 20 pax, max is 50. The flight was very nice especially over the alps, low level flight. The plane came with 10 from gva and we were 10 from zrh. Its sad that they will not fly all year long.
ReplyDeleteIf they gave it to TAV they would have had their terminal.
ReplyDeleteTAV is 10% owner of ZAIC (Zagreb airport international company). Other owners are Aéroports de Paris Management, Bouygues Bâtiment International, Viadukt and Croatia osiguranje.
ReplyDeleteNothing new.
ReplyDeleteZagrebovanje.

ReplyDeleteToday Zagreb is small but very modern, totally inside and outside rebuild, full equipped, functional and clean airport. To compare today Zagreb airport with Jat can be only that you were not here for at least 15 years.
ReplyDeleteIf there was no megalomania they would make this old terminal as terminal 2 for LCC and charters, and made new terminal 1 west of this one in 3 phases.
How about airside when you pass security? Even my chiwawa dog would feel tight there.
DeleteWhat about it? It was totally rebuild 5 years ago. It is small but it does not have retro look like 10 years ago.
DeleteJat's planes are refurbished and their interiors are more than fine. So they are more than comparable to ZAG.
DeleteYeah me too, I though yugoslavia was america until i got out.
ReplyDeleteI think it's totally stupid to compare all the time ZAG and BEG. Two very different countries with different air markets and economies. Belgrade might look better now, but rebuilds and renovates very slowly step by step and in the end the result may not be as satisfying as a brand new terminal. Zagreb is really late, but I am glad that they did not choose TAV. Whoever walked through a TAV terminal knows why they are finished so quickly. Not really quality work up to west european standards.....
ReplyDeleteZAG aiport is old, but looks modern and has had a great makeover. It works for the population and isnt as bad as Serbs make you think.
ReplyDeleteExactly! At least Zagreb doesn't have sewage flooding through the terminal building like Belgrade had!
ReplyDeleteLooks like the makeover only looks good in zagreb.
ReplyDeleteZagreb is where it is at. Demographics dont warrant a new terminal. You have a good chunck of domestic flights that would not be there if they cut subsidied fuel. The rest is low yield and some small portion of corporate traffic. Nobody will build a new terminal if they cant make the money. You may get a new terminal but it may look as the new terminal in tirana. Just look scandal at vienna and their new terminal that is now falling a part. That means zagreb will not see anything before 2020. Vienna should be a good indicator.
ReplyDeleteThe real shocker will come when BEG starts working on their new terminal 3. The new updated terminal 2 will push for extra needed third terminal when it reaches the limit way before 2016. Let alone that BEG is already making decent profits and upgrading the airport on its own. You need to start somewhere to get somewhere. Croatians want a new terminal over night. Its not gonna happen. Bend your head down and learn from BEG!
ReplyDeleteWhen your moved to australia from your beautiful croatia you did not buy a bmw right away. You had to start slow. Cut down on propaganda.
