Fraport to close Ljubljana Airport deal

Fraport poised for Ljubljana Airport takeover

Germany’s Fraport is in the final stages of acquiring a 75.5% stake in Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport. The operator is set to complete its takeover talks with the state investment firm Slovenian Sovereign Holding (SDH), which is in charge of selling state assets, by the end of next week. The news comes after the German conglomerate made the highest offer for a majority share in the airport, outbidding French concession and construction company Vinci, as well as Hong Kong-based Friedmann Pacific Investment Holding. The current political tussle in Slovenia over the formation of a new coalition government is unlikely to delay the sales process, although the winning party of last month’s snap parliamentary elections, which will lead the new government, has expressed caution over privatising state-owned companies.

According to Slovenian press, the multi billion euro management and transport company is set to put emphasis on developing Ljubljana Airport’s cargo traffic, which currently outperforms regional rivals such as Zagreb and Belgrade. Furthermore, Fraport will look into plans at developing a new terminal at Ljubljana Airport. While no firm figures for Fraport’s 75.5% stake in Jože Pučnik Airport have been released, it is believed the deal is worth over 100 million euros. The operator was reportedly prepared to make a bid for Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport’s concession had talks over Ljubljana Airport’s takeover failed.

Fraport, officially known as Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide, manages Europe’s third busiest airport - Frankfurt. In addition, the company also runs several major airports across the world including Cairo, Delhi, Hanover, Pulkovo Airport in Saint Petersburg and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Closer to home, Fraport manages Bulgaria’s Varna and Burgas airports. Furthermore, the conglomerate administrates the main international airports in Lima in Peru, Xi’an in China, Antalya in Turkey and the new airport in Dakar in Senegal, which is currently under construction. The company boasts some 20.000 employees and in 2013 generated revenue of 2.6 billion euros.

      I wonder if they will try to attract some pax from Zagreb and its surrounding area with frequent shuttle service or something similar...

      Vi zivite blizu srpskog podrucija i mrzite ga toliko.

A tvoj komentar jest generaliziranje i krajni nacionalizam jer iako nemaš pojma tko sam ipak si me nazvao mrziteljem. No, ti si to pravo uzimaš.

    My deepest sympathy for LJU airport. I work for an international airline in Frankfurt for more than 25 years. Fraport is not capable of running a decent airport at home, less then ever abroad. I could reveal some stories that are unbelievable. Among them that after building T2 in FRA, they discovered that in whole areas toilets were simply forgotten. Fraport wanted to take over the handling of our airline this year and LOST the tender papers!

    Very interesting about freight being their main point of focus. Several airports have made major cash by focusing on that area. Didn't know LJU had more cargo than ZAG and BEG. Interesting.

      Amazing info. Cargo can really bring nice profits for pax airlines.

      To compare BEG and LJU in terms of cargo for last year:

      * LJU - 17.777 tons
      * BEG - 8.704 tons

      Belgrade might hit the 10.000 tons this year but will still be a long way from what LJU is seeing.

    2. Anonymous08:26

      I think we might fall short of 10.000 tons- still it will still be an increase of about 30% which is fantastic. It really makes me wonder if BEG can handle more cargo, the capacities are not that great. Maybe it's time to consider expanding parking positions so as to separate cargo and passenger flights.

    What happened to OU's flight to Belgrade? It has an epic delay! Is there a storm in Split or did the a/c go tech?

    Good job Norwegian from ARN and JU from TIV who landed in the storm while easyJet from GVA and DY from OSL diverted, the former to Timisoara and the latter to DBV.
