Belgrade Airport presents expansion project |
Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has today presented its official expansion project which has been described as the biggest single investment in Serbian transport infrastructure in 2015. Plans were revealed at a press conference at the International Construction Fair in Belgrade. In a statement, the airport said, “The investment is worth twenty million euros and will be undertaken by local construction companies. It includes the expansion of the airport and the construction of air bridges. This project will result in a 35% increase in capacity and revenue”. The airport will finance the project independently from its own finances.
TERMINAL 1
According to the management's plans, the airport will be expanded by 11.000 square meters with work on the overhaul of its Terminal 1 building, used primarily by low cost and charter airlines, to begin first. The reconstruction of the terminal, built in 1962, will be divided into several phases. Passport and immigration control will be reintroduced at the terminal, which has, for the past several years, been used solely for check-in purposes. Work will be carried out throughout the summer season but the airport says the refurbishment will not affect customers. The completion date has been set for September this year.
TERMINAL 2
Some fifteen million euros will be invested in the expansion of the airport's Terminal 2 building. Four additional gates will be added to the existing seven at the "C" concourse area. Of the additional 11.000 square meters, some 3.000 will be used up as commercial space. The expansion of Terminal 2 is set to be completed by October next year. In addition, next week, the airport will begin tender procedures for the construction of a deicing platform, which will be located next to the taxiway near the Terminal 2 gate area. The airport will also invest in a new base for its fire department.
RUNWAY
The construction of a new second runway has been ruled out for at least the next decade. The airport will hire a consultant through an international tender this year in order to determine how to overhaul its runway without its airport's closure. Some 45 million euros are expected to be invested in the runway's refurbishment. Previously, the Acting Managing Director of Belgrade Airport, Saša Vlaisavljević, said, “In 2016 and 2017 we will overhaul the runway. Last time work was carried out on the runway was in 2005”.
LONG TERM PLANS
The airport's long term plans, scheduled for completion by 2030, are largely based on a 2003 masterplan for the its development. It includes the construction of a new terminal, second runway, hotel and rail links to the city
Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport projects it will handle between 5 to 5.5 million passengers this year following a record breaking 2014. “We are reaching the upper limits of our capacity, so we have to invest in infrastructure”, the head of the airport said recently. He added, "We are expanding our annual capacity to 7/7.5 million passengers. Belgrade welcomed 4.638.194 passengers in 2014, over one million more than the year before.

ReplyDeleteOT: Azerbaijani national carrier to commence possible flights between Belgrade and Baku later this year:
http://tangosix.rs/2015/15/04/azerbejdzanski-azal-uspostavlja-liniju-baku-beograd/
Unless they transport their workers in Serbia on road construction projects, I don't see who will fly with them.
DeleteO&D betweek Baku and Belgrade is minimal - transit possibility very small (maybe few people to PEK but at what price) - unless you are travelling to the Caucasus region, AZAL is not very appealing.
So probably - if it does happen, another short-lived political route...
Are you saying Air Serbia has nothing to offer? These two airlines will cooperate btw.
DeleteThe article is full of speculation. They even managed to predict it's a B787 that will fly on the route.
DeleteAZAL is THE WORST airline out of over 80 I flew. So I'd better avoid any cooperation with them. Their cabin crew are rude and arrogant, service very basic and overall impression very bad
DeleteGYD is one of the top airports for connecting passengers on TK ex-BEG.
DeleteGood and expected news from Belgrade airport. How ewer, bright time looming toward future Serbian Hub, Airport Nikola Tesla, on arriving same corporation partner with Serbian owner. As have been say in previous statement. NIKOLA TESLA will be shining in full light in next ten years. Bit long time, but certainly is time for happiness...
ReplyDeleteRodney & people in expectation. Home of QANTSAVILLE II. Serbia.
Rodney, what is so great about a 20m€ investment when the Aerodrom needs a major expansion to cope with future growth? This is just 'mazanje očiju' so the current BEG management and government can steal more money from the taxpayers.
DeleteCorruption uber alles.

Charlie, you are such a negative person..I notice you do not like any good or positive news.On other note, thank you guys for expending BEG airport, love it.
DeleteJust keeping it real bro.
DeleteUvazeni gospodine Charlie,
Beogradski Nikola Tesla ce to postati u iducih sedam do osam godina. Uz zadnje javljanje iz Srbije u ovom delu godine. Svako dobro i mnogo srece u razvoju Aerodroma Srbije. Vas Rodney.
Sorry for being factious...but 20 mil Eur? LOL!!!!
ReplyDelete(I know, Serbian economy and all that struggle...but this is really a joke! Just look at the "ukras" on Autokomanda coming from the guy without passport!)
*facetious
DeleteYeah I agree. Not sure how much they can do with that sort of cash.
DeleteThis could be done at LYNS (Čenej Airport) . Very good looking.
DeleteLong live QND!
DeleteOT: For the year to March Wizzair carried 16,5 million pax +18,4% LF: 86,7 up 1%. Impressive
ReplyDeleteThis renovation and expansion project is shameful to say at least. The pace it is going is shamefully slow. The time spent for bringing most of the terminal to something semi decent, elsewhere in the world they are building huge modern terminals.
ReplyDeleteShopping at the airport is minimal, the duty free store has shamefully overpriced products especially the Serbian products which can be more than 3 times the price in any Belgrade store. Food outlets are almost non existent, there is no smoking room, baggage is still being manually counted and sorted.
Gates A7-A10 look like crap, departure display boards are small and effort is needed to read them even for someone with good eyesight oh and the casino at BEG is run by a criminal!
For an airport that is operating profitable, they could easily get a loan from any bank to finance all projects and complete them at a much faster pace.
The winter season was wasted in the sense that from October the airport could of renovated the remaining gates and construction could of carried away on building gates C8-C10. If they were smart, they could make 4 gates (C7-C10) for widebody aircraft with dual bridge access (for boarding L1 and L2 simultaneously) which would be ready in time for planned JU services, or any future widebody service larger than a B767.
Getting money from Banks these days ain't easy, especially in Serbia, which bank would loan $200 million in Serbia for new terminal.
DeleteGetting finances from western banks is even harder, Serbia has poor credit rating, only World Bank and EU aid can be sought with some degree of success, others stay clear.
Chinese and Russians won't invest unless they get 4 times the value out of it, in other words Belgrade Airport needs to rely on its own resources to expand, $25 million is all they can afford, for that you can't get much, 12-15000sqm at current price.
BEG stock prices being pumped to historic highs and this announcement all look like preparation for the upcoming sale or more likely concession deal.
DeleteBoth T1 and T2 upgrades are to be completed by autumn of 2016, with no plans announced beyond that point except for necessary runway refurbishment. Sensible management would typically lay out short, mid and long term plans for the airport, and would explain how short term plans fit into larger, long term scheme of things. Not having those plans, or more likely not wanting to disclose them, indicates concession scenario might be in the works. Even if concessionaire takes over and start building new T1 or T3, it would take several years for completion and plans presented today would then serve as a stop gap measure until new terminal is in place. Today's announcement of capacity increase to 7-7,5M pax is clearly to cover for short to mid term only.
Lack of any info on renovation of old A6-A10 gates is another hint. Those gates are sub par and plans for their upgrade existed even during JAT days, but they are not talked about any more. This could be a sign they won't be upgraded at all and would instead be demolished (under concession) to make room for new T1 terminal and gates, as I proposed some time ago in this picture:
http://s9.postimg.org/gdnbfnm1b/BEG.jpg
At that point, Air Serbia gets brand new T1 and all the others get T2. Does that make sense?
DeleteINN-NS
Concourse C can catter three widebody aircraft at a time FYI.
DeleteAB won't come any sooner, confirmed.

Već si pretjerao sa lovačkim pričama.

Oni nigde u blizini lete.
DeleteINN-NS

Second runway project was a colossa waste of money... Now, they can invest that money into much needed cargo facilities.
ReplyDeleteIt is hardly any possible to overhaul the existing runway without closing the airport.
ReplyDeleteMany flights will definitely be shifted to other airports, primarily BJY, but some will also be shifted to INI and KVO.
This is what Bucharest airport authorities did when OTP terminal was undergoing.
About half of the trafic was shifted to BBU from 2005 to 2012.
While there is no problem with that concept it puts possible long haul flights int question since BJY is far from being eligible to handle them as it only has (and will have) a single provisional terminal, no jetways and hardly long enough runway to serve widebodies.

DeleteThe traffic could easily be diverted to Batajnica airport, as it used to be when the runway was overhauled in the eighties.
Check-in and all controls were done in Surcin, and then pax were packed into buses and shipped directly to the airbase.

DeleteEx Yu Aviation Editor, what is Concourse D mentioned in your article? Is it deicing pad or second level to be built on top of existing Concourse C? Or something else? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteYes, deicing. Sorry it wasn't very clear. Clarified it now.
DeleteThanks!
DeleteWhat BEG needs even more than those air bridges is space for some proper restaurant, pekara, fast food restaurant, and of course a new duty free ( not that dufry crap). The current "restaurants", cafes and shops in general are catastrophic. Who in the right mind brought Swarkowski, Victoria Secret and Hugo Boss to an airport?? Yes those shops are suitable for airport such as Istanbul or any other big player but not BEG or SOF or such. Serbian House is a nice idea but I never really see a lot of people showing interest.
ReplyDeleteevery step of the airport complex is designated for ripping off pax, but its like that at most airports worldwide.
DeleteThe deicing facility is a great idea!
ReplyDeletePresentation looks really outdated. It reminds me of those 70's/80's postcards that occasionally appear in the vintage photos section :)
ReplyDeleteYep, it is also based on old "2025" master plan. I spoke too early, they do have long term plan based on that work from 2003, but with added third RWY, a lot more Cargo, and apparently what was Terminal 3 is now renamed to Terminal 4 according to that slide. Oh, and C concourse looks like making a left 90 degree turn and having four more airbridges looking like "new" Terminal 3, and some remote round satellite terminal next to it, where new deicing pad should be?!? That can't be right? Besides, after CDG no one wants remote, round satellite terminals ever again.
DeleteNew C gates picture also shows second level (in yellow). We also have to figure out where will ATR stands be - probably current apron B, fighting for space with cargo planes?
Still, investing in T1 beyond absolutely necessary stop gap measures is a colossal waste of money. All you get with this is 4 more departure-only passport points primarily for LCC and charters. Does not do a thing for arriving or transit pax.
Delete"novina na novom fingerskom hodniku C biće i funkcionalno razdvojeni hodnici za dolazne i odlazne putnike"

ReplyDeleteHeh, good observation. Like it or not, Iran Air's insignia is iconic and one of the most beautiful tales in the world. Unfortunately, due to the foresseable removal of sanctions, we may not see them at Belgrade any longer, unless they decide to launch it as a route on its own, what could be easily done with an A320. It will be interesting to observe how the easing of sanctions against Iran might impact the ME3 and TK cause Iran that's the potential and market of Turkey but with the ressources of the ME3. Let's watch and see.

DeleteYou never know what to expect with the management of Aerodrom NT. A few years ago they announced a 4 phase renovation and modernization of the Aerodrom. I think they completed 2 of the phases and then nothing. No news on the new floor that was to be added as part of the plan to separate arrival and departing passengers. So who knows if this plan will ever be completed. AS AirCEO has stated numerous times there is no real long terms plans.
ReplyDeleteI hope the Aerodrom comes under professional management ASAP as these local jokers have no idea how to run an Airport. And the government treats the Aerodrom as a reward system for political lackeys and for patronage purposes. It is nothing short of disgusting, as Serbian taxpayers have to pay for their political games. In a country which is largely economically depressed, the Aerodrom is one of the few bright areas with great regional potential.
-- Charlie
Well they do have long term plans in that last diagram for 2030, but is it realistic? To build everything depicted including not one but two additional runways for a total or three (LHR has two!), additional terminal(s), railway and massive Cargo areas all in 15 years time would require outrageous investment way beyond airport's current means. Unless Bill Gates suddenly discovers he is of Serbian origin and decides to gift Serbia with this great airport, I see no other way to make it happen by 2030!
DeleteGood luck to Nikola Tesla Airport, but you can do it better! Hope for a better management at the airport with a clear vision and a better, more permanent solution!

ReplyDeleteSome not directly related but quite interesting numbers. Emirates LF on the route to AMS stood at 84% for the last year, while the one of Etihad stood at 67%. Out of those, for EK 75% are connecting passengers and ~25% are O&D, around 1% being bridge. In the meanwhile, in the case of Etihad, the connecting traffic eqauls to 65%, O&D to a mere 6.5% but with very strong bridge connections out of AMS via its codeshare with KLM which equals 16% of the total traffic. QR opening the route from the upcoming summer season.
