Tuzla poised for Vienna flights

Tuzla - Vienna flights to be launched soon

Tuzla Airport is likely to announce details of a new scheduled service to Vienna next week. Managing Director, Rafet Karasalihović says, "Talks are in their final stages. We are working on administrative matters, such as permits from relevant authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Vienna". According to Mr Karasalihović, services will operate at least twice per week. While the operator has not been disclosed, in June the airport noted it was in talks with the small Austrian airline People’s Viennaline regarding the launch of two weekly flights from the Austrian capital with its single Embraer 170 jet. However, the airline has not commented on the matter. There are no direct flights between the two cities. In 2009, B&H Airlines considered introducing a stop in Tuzla on its Sarajevo - Vienna route, however, these plans never materialised.

Services to Vienna could mark the first agreement made between the airport and a commercial carrier other than Wizz Air in more than two years. The low cost airline opened its base in Tuzla this June by basing an Airbus A320 at the airport. During the year, the no frills carrier launched services from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s third largest city to Frankfurt-Hahn, Sandefjord, Memmingen and Stockholm-Skavsta and increased its capacity from Tuzla by 70% compared to 2014. Furthermore, the airline has carried 290.000 passengers to and from Tuzla since first launching operations there in May 2013. Wizz Air maintains a total of nine routes from Tuzla, none of which are close to Vienna. A significant Bosnian diaspora resides in Austria. People’s Viennaline operates flights between the Austrian capital and Switzerland, as well as seasonal summer flights to the Italian island of Sardinia.

Tuzla Airport has struggled to attract airlines and passengers since it opened its doors for commercial use in 1998. However, its fortunes turned in 2013 when Wizz Air launched its first service from Malmo. Flights quickly proved popular and the no frills airline expanded its network. In 2014, the airport handled 151.353 passengers, a notable 146% increase on the year before. The airport welcomed more passengers last year than it did for the three previous years combined. During the first eight months of 2015, Tuzla Airport has continued to see its passenger numbers grow with 163.118 travellers handled, an increase of 76.9% compared to the same period last year. The airport estimates it will handle some 200.000 travellers in 2015.

There's no need to spew such malicious comments. With the overall catastrophic economic situation in Bosnia, any additional new route from any airport therein is good, for the benefit of the entire state condominium.

The RS government, as the representative of BNX majority stake owner, had to initiate the process of replacing the entire Supervisory and Managing Board long ago. But, the RS government is both incompetent and corrupt, and does not care if the RS public companies don't work as expected. All these ministers are only after their own interest, and, in addition to that, a lots of various, incompetent knaves gather around them all the time so everything in the RS have been inexorably sinking for years and years now.

it is not about incompetent and corrupt management. It is about decision that only route that would be supported is Banja Luka - Belgrade and all other routes should be demotivated because any route (espetialy to Vienna, Zurich, Frankfurt...) will harm Air Serbia and connections via Beograd.

And I could understand that if Air Serbia fly 4 flights per day to Belgrade. But with 3 flights per week and just some 400-450 passengers one way per month one should tell them fuck off. We will support some other routes.

To give same amount of money to Austrian, Lufthansa or Swiss with obligation to fly at least one flight per day would be much bigger benefit for Banja Luka and for sure will attract much more passengers.

Selective criticism, as per usual. Because the Federation government is such a bastion of economic productivity and entrepreneurial abundance.

I wonder what happened to Bosnia's national carrier? Or why the biggest airport in the country goes to sleep between 00h00 and 06h00 every day? And what about those bountiful "in-the-red" figures.

Let's admit it. Both halves of the Dayton barrier are dysfunctional and need some serious help. The only difference is that RS has got one corrupt administration, while the Federation has got 10+ corrupt governments.

The only two legacy carriers' routes that should work from Turla are

    Austrian - Vienna
    Turkish - Istanbul

Tuzla airport management must work on opening those two routes because it would make airport competitive with connections to all world via those airports.

I didn't say so. It would be profitable if Austrian will fly on route. But small nonname airline can attract just P2P passengers. And that route have chance just and only if they have huge number of connection passengers. With this company there will be almost non of those.

So, I don't see good future and potentials in that route.

No, they are pretty much "enemies". They had huge arguments few years ago about the VIE-ACH route and fees OS had to pay in ACH. ACH airport is in some sort of private ownership of the same group where Peoples belongs to. OS finally gave up on that route. There is no codesharing and practically no chance for that to happen in the future.

In my humble opinion, the "Altenrhein Luftfahrt GmbH", mostly known as People's Viennaline, a small airline established in 2010, with its headquarter in Vienna, is a perfect airline to serve TZLVIE using their Embraer 170 with its 76 all economy class seats.

Now, the passengers can have their connections from Vienna to New York, Washington, St Petersburg, Tel Aviv and so on.

    Well done Tuzla, well done!

People's Viennaline does not fly to New York, Tel Aviv, St.Petersburg etc. They fly just to St.Gallen, small airport in Switzerland. As they don't have code-share and not even interline with any airline there would be no connection.

And as Purger said there is not enough passengers for O&D.

    3. Anonymous14:02

if they don't have code-share or interline (and they don't) than you can not make connection. You can if you want to risk separate ticket and to loose expensive one like VIE-JFK. But who will take that risk.

And of course, you can write what ever you want espetialy to make good promotion for management "success"

Excellent idea, take a bankrupt airline and open some loss making routes. Aeroflot and Air Serbia already connect Belgrade to Moscow very well, and there is very little demand for O&D traffic from Serbia to other cities in Russia that can't be connected through Moscow already.

    1. Anonymous13:32

If there was enough room for another legacy carrier, AF would have jumped in. As for LCC, it is questionable whether they could create enough demand.

If I remember correctly all routes with 3 carriers from BEG eventually ended up in one or even two of them withdrawing. It happened with Vienna, it happened with Rome, it happened with Geneva. The only exception I know of is Istanbul.

If Air Serbia could operate flights from B&H to a third country, they could do something like this:

    BEG-BNX-VIE-BNX-BEG twice a week with AT7, and
    BEG-BNX-ZRH-BNX-BEG twice a week with AT7

That's BEG-BNX 4 times a week, BNX-VIE 2 times a week, BNX-ZRH 2 times a week. No need for a base in BNX, ATR72 keeps price low, and JU already has a presence at both VIE and ZRH. Banja Luka gets direct link to two key destinations and can draw passengers from as far as ZAG.
