NEWS FLASH
The Mayor of Belgrade, Siniša Mali, has said that Belgrade Airport will be put up for concession so it can keep up with Air Serbia's growth. According to Mr Mali, an estimate on the airport's value is expected by the end of the year. France's Lazard, which is acting as a privatisation adviosr, is currently drawing up documents needed to contact interested investors. "With flights to the United States and potentially Canada, slowly but surely the airport will have to develop in line with Air Serbia. That includes hotels, a new terminal, satellite terminal and maybe even a new runway. We need a partner who knows how to do this, who knows how to manage an airport so we can improve service levels", Mr Mali said. Earlier this year, Serbia's Prime Minister, Aleksandar Vučić, estimated the airport's value at 500 million euro.
Please, please ask the company that runs the Amsterdam Schiphol to take over BEG. The best organized airport by far, with the most passenger friendly environment. Eye-opening experience. Dutch are true experts in spatial planning and functionality.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I'm from Canada and AMS is my favourite airport in Europe, excellent large airport for transfering. Now if BEG could become a mini Schiphol for the Balkans.
DeleteI'm a frequent traveller and I find AMS to be OK to good, certainly not a wow experience. MUC remains my favourite in Europe.
DeleteThe only advantage that MUC has that its terminal is brand new. Otherwise badly designed. Despite many beautiful bridges, they are too often forced to transport passengers by bus. MUC is a shopping mall first, airport second. When you are a passenger in transfer, you realize that nothing really compares to AMS.
DeleteAlso Zurich Airport is interested in BEG
ReplyDeleteSure it is...
DeleteVery smart move to wait for TATL flights to launch. It makes the airport much more appealing to potential buyers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you guys, AMS is one of the best airports in the world. Last week went to YYZ terminal 3 and it was the worst world airport I have ever seen. Super disappointed as I had such a high expectations. Old arrivals with the belt system that can not handle wide-body aircrafts, lines in custom area are huge and no enough officers to process passengers, sticks so bad and they have a single bathroom. Unreal bad experience. Hope BEG select an European company as they seem to know what to do.
ReplyDeleteLinear satellite terminal for T4 would not be needed in the next 20 years, so he is really talking about that monstruous round satellite left of D1 on this picture:

While new T3 is a reasonable solution, that satellite terminal is a major design fail and future generations will ask "Who is the idiot who proposed this"? Well now you know.
That is not a satellite terminal. I believe he really refers to T4. Satellite terminals are a major bother for passengers. AMS is great precisely because there are no satellite terminals. Dutch realized that passengers don't like it and that they make everything much more complicated. I hope BEG will abandon that concept. I understand why potential concession partner would prefer it. It is much easier to build a new shiny terminal than to expand and improve the existing one.
DeleteThat is a round satellite extension of a new, square T3 building to be built. Zoom in into that picture left of D1 and white square box is a new Terminal 3, with white circle left of it is satellite terminal monstruosity. New ZAG terminal has long, dark slanted tunnels leading to/from jetways as a laughingstock and now some savage wants to do the same with tiny round satellite fail just to get few more gates. Move the road to make more room on the west side of new T3 instead on satellite terminal!!!!!
Deletethis is just proposed layout. things has changed due to satellite terminal dysfunction and outdate. point is to book total area and then to leave to future investor to make final decision.
DeleteThat satellite proposal was posted in another forum last year:

Instead of round satellite, extend Terminal 3 all the way to the Museum, bury part of access road undergound and add new linear Concourse approximately where road is now. More expensive but FAR superior solution without satellites.
Please excuse my ignorance but what is a satellite terminal? Can't find it online
ReplyDeleteA terminal that is completely physically separated from other terminals at an airport. You have to leave one terminal and than use underground tunnels (least bother, but still a major nuisance), buses or some kind of rail to get from one terminal to the other.
