EX-YU airlines to boost winter operations

The national carriers from the former Yugoslavia will boost operations throughout their networks this coming 2016/17 winter season, which begins on October 30.

Air Serbia will lead the growth, with the airline to operate flights to New York and extend seasonal services to Larnaca and Hamburg. In a statement, Air Serbia’s CEO, Dane Kondić, said, “Initially launched as a summer service, Hamburg has quickly established itself as a valuable point in our network, with strong passenger load factors. As a result of its exceptional performance we have decided to upgrade Hamburg to a year-round operation”. At this point, the remaining new seasonal routes, launched by the carrier during the summer, will not be extended, although flights from Belgrade to St Petersburg will be operated between December 21 and January 22 twice per week. The Serbian carrier will add one flight per week each to Berlin, Milan, Tirana and Tel Aviv. Earlier this month, Mr Kondić hinted at “one or two surprises” in the winter network. On the other hand, the carrier will suspend its flights to Warsaw.

After downsizing its network during the summer, Adria Airways plans to boost frequencies on several routes out of Ljubljana this coming winter season when compared to last year. They include Amsterdam, Paris, Sarajevo, Warsaw and Zurich. Furthermore, the Slovenian carrier intends on concluding codeshare agreements with Sky Team-members Air France and KLM, on its flights to Paris and Amsterdam. From its base in Lodz the airline will strengthen its Munich service by adding another weekly departure for a total of twelve, while flights from Tirana to the Bavarian city, launched during the summer, will continue to be maintained. On the other hand, the carrier will discontinue services from the Slovenian capital to Berlin and will end operations out of the Polish city of Olsztyn.

Croatia Airlines will discontinue two routes this winter season in order to boost frequencies and vacate aircraft for more popular destinations. The carrier will add one additional weekly frequency between Zagreb and Copenhagen, and two extra rotations from Split to Munich for a total of six weekly flights. Furthermore, it will extend its seasonal service from Dubrovnik to Frankfurt into the winter months. On the other hand, Croatia Airlines will terminate operations from Zagreb to Pristina and between Dubrovnik and Rome. At this point, flights to Pristina are set to resume at the start of the 2017 summer season in late March next year.

Last month, Montenegro Airlines signed a wide-ranging codeshare agreement with Air Serbia to over thirty of the latter’s destinations, which comes into effect on October 1. There have been suggestions that winter will see significant changes in the airline’s operations, however, at this point, none have been made. The only amendments to the airline’s schedule so far is the reduction of one weekly flight from Tivat to both Belgrade and Moscow. All services from Podgorica remain the same as last year. Montenegrin press have reported that the carrier will add an additional daily flight from Podgorica to Belgrade, although they have not been added to the system.

What are these “surprises” they talk about at Air Serbia? Are they referring to the extension of Hamburg or will they add some more new routes?

They have a habit of launching sales a month before they start the actual route so who knows. They announced double daily Zagreb less then a month before it started.

From what I'm hearing they should keep Kiev. It's a (suprisingly) good feeder for their JFK flights.

I doubt MUC will be launched and even if, by some miracle, they do, I don't think it will last long.

First of all, Lufthansa operates 14 weekly flights with their Embraer which is perfectly suited for this 01 hours 20 minute flight. Not only can LH rely on business and other O&D passengers but they can also rely on a large number of transfer passengers. Furthermore, for the past year or so, LH has actively tried to develop MUC as a connecting hub for Serbs given that FRA is becoming overcrowded.

Secondly, Wizz Air already flies to Memmingen and they've already announced NUE flights which should start next year. Bavaria is well covered by W6 and LH.

What role would JU play in all this? In my opinion this route would become WAW 2.0.
If you JU had a regional jet then they might have been competitive here. However they can't be it with their A319 and a split schedule. It would be better to consolidate their position in places like TXL, STR or DUS as I am sure BEG is pretty high on Eurowings' list of destinations.

JU could send an ATR there. It is as far as Prague, if not closer. ATR is much more economical than Embraer.

    7. Nemjee10:09

Back in 2007 I flew on JU from BEG to MUC, it was one of those Finnish Atrs where you board from the front door.
All I can say is that it took us 02.45 to reach Munich. One of the most painful experiences in my life. It was a bit worse than when Olympic used to operate to BEG with the same aircraft.

If they decide to send the Atr then they would be butchered by the competition. Unlike with Prague, here they wouldn't be alone and they couldn't charge €250 for a return flight.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous10:20

They could charge less, since the operation costs for ATRs are significantly lower. I can understand that aviation enthusiasts would always prefer jets, but ATRs is a very economical working horse. Its sales prove that.

      Delete
    9. Nemjee11:05

No one is saying that the Atr isn't a wonderful aircraft but each airplane is suited for a specific market. The Atr is great on routes up to 500 nm, which is about 930 km. Now that means that MUC is more or less pushing it especially since an aircraft's performance worsens as we get closer to its recommended limits.

Also, JU could charge less but by how much? If LH drops their price to €150 how much lower can JU go? The flight is not short and the airport is not cheap.

The Atr shouldn't be sent to any route longer than 90 minutes. As mentioned early, Prague is an exception because they face no competition. However, if Wizz Air was to launch BEG-PRG then JU would have to reconsider their approach to the Czech market.

      Delete
    18. Anonymous15:07

What would be exactly the LH advantage on BEG-MUC? Both companies would fly from their hubs and JU has lower costs. The market is certainly not smaller than DUS, STR or TXL and it is certainly richer. If JU could fill A319 there, it could successfully compete.

Otkud ti ovo za dug transfer? TK ima masu letova iz Minhena a i prema Balkanu i vecini gradova na njemu daleko vise letova nego Air Serbia. Aerodrom u IST nije top? I don't understand how OU can't make CPH work. Not only can they rely on considerable O&D but it's also a mega Star Alliance hub. Not to mention that CPH is one of the more pleasant airports to transfer at. I guess that the sector wasn't as profitable as they expected with the Q400.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous10:08

Possibly not a good transfer point for them. OU offers much better frequencies and times through Lufthansa hubs in Germany.

Now I don't know about the pricing of air fares but that could be a factor too.

Then again OU is extremely weak in Scandinavia. Bar for the Copenhagen flights and a few charters to Sweden and Norway during the summer they are practically non-existent on that market.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous10:13

Q400 is too slow compared to jets and too expensive compared to ATR. The aircraft basically failed in Europe and Asia. The situation is somewhat better in North America. The distances there are more suited for this type of plane.

      Delete
    3. Nemjee10:13

Yes, you are right. It's really crazy that they don't fly at least three times per week to both CPH and ARN.

Maybe they could do what Jat used to do and link the two. For fun, they can also add Gothenburg to the mix. :D

OU suspending the route is great news for Norwegian but it also makes MMX-ZAG far more attractive. Malmo is usually one of the first destinations for Wizz Air when expanding in a new ex-YU airport.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous10:15

@Nemjee, I think you misread but OU is not suspending CPH, they are increasing it

    5. Nemjee10:18

Many thanks for the correction, I was reading the news on my phone while outside. :)

Ok, then this is good news for ZAG and for OU. By the way, does anyone know if OU code-shares with SK to North America?

      Delete
    6. Anonymous10:22

@Nemjee, I still agree with you that their Scandinavian network (if we can call it that) is extremely week. Not flying to Stockholm even during the summer is crazy especially considering how many visitors from the Nordic countries visit Croatia.

They don't cs with SAS to the US/Canada. Only on inter-European flights.

      Delete
    7. Nemjee11:06

Thanks. Given that OU doesn't have to worry about banks, makes me wonder if summer seasonal flights to ARN could be operated in the following manner:

      ZAG-ARN-DBV/SPU/PUY-ARN-ZAG

      Delete
    8. Anonymous11:53

Wishful thinking, Nemjee. For bit longer routes above 50 mins the Q8-400 is far better suited and more economical than ATR. Most OU routes with Dash are longer than that, hence at least for OU the Dash is lot better suited. I tend to say that JU would be happier with Dash as they could use it to operate MUC, PRG and several other routes for which ATR is unsuited and Airbus too big.

I really cant understand why Air Ser ia does not keep St Petersburg and Kiev during winter. There is a healthy p2p demand for LED which would minimize the risk as much as possible (plus if they offer good transfer times they could attract even more pax), and Kiev (from what I can read in the commentsl is doing unexpectedly well. On top of that, these two eastern destinations would give some balance in their western oriented network (which is very important if you would like to build a hub of any kind).

agent level (so no airline internet or web sales or group in general) for last 12 months indicate HR having 9% higher demand. That is globally between Australia and Croatia - noting that this is only agent sales (no groups), so we miss airline internet sales or office sales. Geia sou... don't know. Without night flights many of their destinations become much less competitive since ATH can't normally fit in the regional bank.

That said, it's still 'early' and they might add a few night flights, especially for JFK. The same way they did with OTP, SOF, TIA and SKP.

Mind you, Aegean and Swiss just signed a code-share agreement which is quite bad for JU. LX and A3 will offer a total of 17 weekly flights between ATH and ZRH. Add to that all the flights to IST, MUC and FRA and BEG will have a big problem to position itself as a serious transfer hub for Greek passengers. It also doesn't help that SKG will be reduced to four weekly flights.

I also hope ATH management becomes more serious. Because of their incompetence United almost walked away but thank God they will keep their EWR flights. Unfortunately United isn't expanding as much as they could because of Lufty and because of that ATH isn't connected with the US in winter time.

      So what's your point ?

It's interesting how no employees from JP, OU or YM ever post load factors from their company on this website.

I wonder why that is ?

Those are great loads, especially for JUL.

Anon @ 7:58 why the hostility?

First of all we do not know if these are real results. Secondly, Assuming they are accurate we can all discuss further. How are you offended by someone posting this information? Don't get it.

Winter is the perfect time for Air Serbia and Montenegro Airlines to cooperate more. AS has routes that would work in the winter, LED, KBP, and possibly MUC, not to mention potentially CAI. And MA has available planes. It seem like a win-win scenario.

Presipanje iz šupljeg u prazno. Ugase par linija da bi otvorili par novih, smanje ovde a povećaju tamo. Nema novih aviona za pravi rast.
