Serbia's national carrier is today marking its third anniversary since relaunching as Air Serbia on October 26, 2013. As it enters its fourth year, the airline has promised new innovations and announcements in the months to come. "As we enter our fourth year, we are committed to pushing the boundaries further when it comes to our products and services. As part of this we are especially looking forward to switching to the Sabre reservation system in early 2017, which will enable us to introduce many exciting innovations. When we launched Air Serbia, our vision was to be the best airline in Southeast Europe, and to do that we placed a huge emphasis on guest experience", Air Serbia's CEO, Dane Kondić, told the airline's magazine publication.
The carrier has remained tight-lipped on its future plans but has revealed its intention to commence services to Tehran in 2017. "Introducing these flights during the upcoming winter season is not possible, but they are likely next summer. If we do introduce Belgrade - Tehran flights, Air Serbia will have to fly in partnership with Iran Air", Mr Kondić said last month. Meanwhile, the carrier's Chairman, Siniša Mali, noted, "We are considering flights to Canada, Chicago and some other destinations. We are undertaking analysis but no decision has been made. However, it is certainly a logical continuation for Air Serbia's future development. When you have one wide body aircraft, then you open up the possibility to have another one", Mr Mali said. He added, "Of course we are thinking of moving forward with our partner Etihad Airways, but I do not want to make any presumptions. When we make a concrete decision we will announce our plans". During 2016 the carrier introduced long haul flights to New York and its first wide body aircraft, the A330-200. As part of its new product offering, the carrier rolled out a new in-flight entertainment system, available across its jet-engine fleet, as well as an in-flight nanny service on its New York flights. Furthermore, Air Serbia commenced four new seasonal routes this summer, one of which has been extended into the winter months as well.
The President and CEO of the Etihad Aviation Group, James Hogan, says Air Serbia's part-owner, Etihad Airways, is planning on a long-term partnership with its Serbian counterpart. "We see more opportunity over the next five years to do more long haul flying. However, to be successful in long haul flying you have to develop a destination and tourism strategy and cooperate with stakeholders. In aviation terms, it's about the mix of traffic. We have transfer traffic and destination traffic. Today it's probably more destination traffic among Serbians and ethnic traffic coming back. We want to bring in more holiday traffic, more leisure travellers and more business travellers through the system". He added, "I have every confidence that as the airport is upgraded, as the destination becomes more known all over the world, we can grow more the long haul element of Air Serbia in the next five years". In the coming year, Air Serbia will also have to address the replacement of its regional fleet.
Since its relaunch in 2013, the Serbian carrier has doubled in size compared to its predecessor, introduced a handful of new routes, upgraded its fleet with eight Airbus A319s, two A320s and one ATR72 aircraft, with ten A320neos on order, and rolled out a wide array of new services including a new frequent flyer program, a dedicated Premium Lounge in Belgrade, web check-in and on board Internet connectivity. However, in 2017, Air Serbia also faces growing competition at home. Wizz Air is set to base a second aircraft and launch new routes out of Belgrade next year, while low cost competition has been growing at nearby Niš Airport as well.
They will have to find a way to effectively compete against LCCs. They are being challenged on more and more routes which is great for consumers but for example next year they will compete against Transavia on Amsterdam route. I wonder if it would be viable for them to open their own LCC.
DeleteAny hints at what that plan may be?
DeleteJao bre, nije valjda plaćanje za window seats i tome slični "noviteti"?
DeleteI guess it´s Adrias hybrid model. No meals, luggage fee, prepaid priority boarding, charging for seat etc. I will rather fly Ryanair then..
DeleteAir Serbia Hybrid: now giving you even less value for your tax $.

Framework for pay model was in place for a while, looks like switch to Sabre is holding this up. That model is a way to go for Air Serbia and I wrote about it long time ago, I think in 2014. There is no future for all inclusive model.
DeleteWhatever you may think of them (since this airline seems to stir up so many emotions for some people on here - good and bad) they have come a looong way from the airline they replaced.
ReplyDeleteNo one is denying that but seems like they started the whole thing a bit too ambitiously which is why things have stalled or even gone backwards. For example the new service on flights under two hours is a disgrace. Would be better to just serve drinks.
DeleteEvery time they took a slightly cautious approach they were heavily criticized for not pushing for more. If they start serving drinks only tomorrow morning there will be a barrage of trash on them for not including at least a dry biscuit in the package.
DeleteAnonymous October 26, 2016 at 9:06 AM
DeleteWhy should they only serve drinks? Everyone here talks about some "bajati sendvic". The sandwich is delicious, moist and fresh, and usually comes with some sort or other sweet for dessert. Sufficient to sustain one on a short, less than 2 hour flight. What do you expect to be served on a short-haul flight - Švedski sto?
When was the last time you flew with JU? They serve a tiny toast with some namaz that is only in the middle of the bread. It's absolutely horrible to say the least. Better to give out a chocolate and drinks than that sram
DeleteI fly London-BEG several times per year. They offer choice of 2 hot meals.
DeleteAnonymous October 26, 2016 at 9:46 AM
DeleteI actually flew with them last month to Pula and back. Got a paper bag with a sandwich, strudel and beverage. Everything was tasty. So I'm really not sure on which flight you just got "tost sa namazom"? Please enlighten us.
Flew ZAG-BEG-ZAG twice this month. Tinny sandwich which was so bad that I give it back after just one bite, no strudel or any other desert, small bottle of water, no other drinks, not even a coffee.
DeleteOK, I don't need that on 1 hour flight (not even on 3 hour flight), but to be honest, I don't find that service any different than one on Croatia Airlines international short flights. I is much worst that it was on beginning. So far away from promise that it will be "prime boutique service on JU flights".
One more time, I don't care, I will use JU when price and connections are good, I don't get better in other airlines, but it is not "boutique" airline any more. Just regular, typical, European airline.
They have 3 different service types.
Delete1 hour and below
1-2 hours
2+ hours
So service on all three varies (that's why there are different accounts by different people flying different routes here). Before it used to be the same service up to two hours. Now it is not.
Objektivno.

DeleteThe sandwiches served in Air Serbia are really bad, and poorly packaged. Jat used to have better offering before catering refused to load for JU. I remember going with the Jat B733 to SJJ, full flight, and a bar service was available. What Air Serbia offers on its short flights is disappointing at best.
DeleteTrue that for old JAT. And everything was included in the price. Seems it will no longer be the case. Pay for your seat, pay for the luggage, pay for the sandwich, pay for cofee... all for the same full price.
DeleteOnline check-in from all airports?
ReplyDelete+1 I wonder why they didn't do it already.
DeleteAt least to all the destinations that are operated at night.
Like FRA to begin with.
Delete+1 It's been forever!
DeleteGiven that the FR tomorrow announces more flights from Nis, 2017 will not be as great for Air Serbia. Every day more passengers prefer to travel cheaper, including myself, and if not from Belgrade with W6 many people will not hesitate to travel 2 hours to reach Nis, or even Budapest if they can save a couple hundred euros.
ReplyDeleteI hope in 2017 ASL will revised it´s pricing policy, because we are not all gastarbeiters from Switzerland or Germany and one way tickets can not cost over 200 eur. All the best!
At the same time not every airline can be a LCC. A ticket of 200 euros is normal for a full fare airline giving you free luggage and other opportunities.
DeleteWe've also seen from yesterday's link that a lot of people from Belgrade use INI.
DeleteAbsolutely, I am not expecting them flying for 5€ as FR from Nis obviously, but same normal prices would be appreciated!
DeleteSamo kompletan idiot sa ovog sajta moze da nazove 4000 ljudi od skoro 3.5 meleona ljudi iz Beograda Vojvodine i Zapadne Srbije "lot of people from Belgrade". Veoma mnogo zaista. Zaista nemam reci.
DeleteŠta je tvoj problem? It is true that a lot of people from Beograd use INI.
DeleteThe return price 150-250 euros on Europe flights is quite fine with legacies. That what you get from other legacies, often excluding baggage.
DeleteI would never travel to Budapest from Belgrade for a flight, because that is too expensive and too complicated. It takes too much time, is not cheap (with transport and food included, and eventually accommodation). You have to cross the border, which is particularly annoying in summer and during holidays. Why paying for an airplane if you have to spend 90% of your travel in a bus? Why just don't take a bus to your destination instead.
BUD worked for Serbia during the 1990s, when BEG was closed. Not today.
I fly a lot and I honestly did not meet anybody doing this combination. Maybe it can work for people from Subotica.
I would travel to Nis, however, to save 100 euros or more if they have a long term cheap parking there. The same country, no border.
No it is not a lot of people.
Delete"FR tomorrow announces more flights from Nis"
DeleteReally ???
Guys there is no indication that FR is announcing new routes. Yesterday in the news the author wrote there is a Ryanair press briefing scheduled in Nis tomorrow. It also said it does not mean that it has anything to do with new route announcements. They have three flights launching from INI this week. Probably related to that. 2 days ago INI GM said in an interview that that terminal needs to be expanded and he hopes there will be no new route until that happens.
DeleteThe last time around they said the same and FR ended up announcing new routes. We will have to wait and see what happens.
DeleteAnon 9:19,
DeleteJU cannot compete with LCCs and will never be able to offer you anything that cheap. If flying cheap is your one and only criteria then LCCs are clearly your choice and that is fine. But there is no point in criticizing legacy carriers for offering considerably higher prices.
If you want to judge JU's prices then your benchmark is other legacy carriers. And you will find JU quite affordable in that league.
My friend anonymous 12 : 31 pm I think you are wrong. I'm from Greece and believe me there is enough room of reduction their prices. See Aegean airlines when Ryanair, easyjet ,vueling, volotea got into the game, they forced Aegean to lower their prices, they had no choice.
DeleteBut JU already faces competition from LCCs, and the prices are what they are. It is not realistic to expect all major European LCCs to come to Serbia as it is far less attractive market compared to Greece.
DeleteI hope you people realize that BA did survive and is doing quite fine despite the strongest possible presence of all major LCCs in Britain (including St. Wizz, which often operate only with heavy local subsidies).
DeleteAir Lingus survived on the much smaller Irish market!
LCCs lowered prices and, unfortunately, the level of service of legacies, but they can not replace good legacies.
Both LCCs and legacies play have their markets that only partially overlap.
If price was everything, all Europe would drive Dacias. But in reality...
My friend anonymous 2:45 pm, I'm from a different country I don't hate anyone and I think there is no such thing I CAN NOT lower the prices, there is I DON'T WANT to lower the prices. Maybe if Air Serbia was a private owned airline they would think over this prices matter. Thanks for listening and please there is no need of attacking as I said l don't care about haters or non haters.
DeleteAnon 2:47 We all know what is the standard in Britain and Ireland, so comparing the prices of BA and Air Lingus and their and our salaries you will find answer yourself.
DeleteSo make sure that you understand that nobody is saying they have to lower price to compete with LCC but having some normal prices of 1-2 hours flight would be great.
BTW There is more Dacias here then in UK for sure, which means we can not afford Land Rover :P
But, but, but, don't you know that when St. Wizz finally arrives to BEG (it is already there for years, but I don't want to ruin the argument) and waives its hand, mountains will move and ASL will turn into ashes?
DeleteI am quite happy with British Nissan. Non need for expensive Land Rover to compensate my insecurities (which I admitt I have) :D
Does anyone know their average cabin LF this year? I assume it would decrease since they added a lot of capacity with the A330.
ReplyDeleteIn summer they had good loads on the A332 it will only affect it n winter
Delete... or if anyone knows their passenger numbers for first three quarters.

@Anon 12:29
DeleteThe line between Legacies and LCCs in Europe has been getting blurrier and blurrier for a while now. Passengers want cheap flights, they want to be able to save money by only bringing hand luggage and they don't care about the catering on the short haul. These are fact which were recognized by the most successful airlines in Europe - LH group and IAG. ASL should give up on this boutique airline nonsense L and switch to a hybrid model of sorts ASAP or they will be obliterated by both LCCs (FR and W6) and the LH group.
Some passengers. Quite a few passengers have luggage, want catering, as you can see if you approach any luggage belt in a European airport.
DeleteYour assumptions are not facts.
The only fact is that LH group seriously suffers from LCC competition and attempts to do everything possible to survive. In addition to degrading services, major legacies also organized their own LCCs, like Eurowings, Vueling or Transavia. How successful this will be, time will tell.
It is surely rich to represent all this as a sign of strength. I guess frequent strikes are also sure signs that LH is "the most successful airline in Europe"?
Strikes are linked to labour laws throughout Europe, LH can't influence those.
Delete@Anon 4:59
DeleteLH group and IAG are certainly among the most successful legacy airlines in Europe. Overall, Ryanair is the most successful and is destroying competition left, right and centre (because no one cares about "boutique" experience on 2 hour flights - even rich people or business people care more about frequencies and times than about metal cutlery)
Anon. 6.12
DeleteThese is non-sequitur. One does not exclude the other.
Most legacies are losing market share for years, LH group the most.
&AnonymousOctober 26, 2016 at 9:46 AM
Delete... or if anyone knows their passenger numbers for first three quarters.
JU statistics for Q1-Q3 2016 :
2,08 million passengers, average LF 72,6%. These figures include Aviolet flights.
With more and more people choosing to fly with low-cost airlines, I wonder if there are any chances of them expending a bit more in the next few years.
ReplyDeleteCould they come somewhere near to LOT's size by 2020 maybe?
No chance man, just look at the market size.
Hau jes no.
DeleteGive us an example of a few of those "izjave", please.
U Austrianu ni to.
Nekada dobijes sendvic, nekada kolac.
DeleteThe point is, now that "ALL FLIGHTS DELAYED, ALL FLIGHTS DELAYED" does not work anymore, and when: "HAHAHA NO DoT LICENCE, NO A332, THOSE FLIGHTS WILL NEVER START" does not work anymore, and when: "HAHAHA NO ONLINE CHECKIN IN 21st CENTURY" does not work anymore, and when even: "SOB, SOB, POOR TAXPAYERS... SOB... ALL THAT MONEY... SOB" does not work anymore, a new artillery ammo is required. Catering may not be as attractive ammo as the previous shipments but the situation with ammo is so critical that even catering will serve its purpose.
DeleteHahaha it's ok, don't worry, the airline is not well at all so we haters are getting all that we need. It will be even more fun when the second W6 A320 arrives <3
DeleteZivim u Becu i najvise putujem Austrianom.
A iskreno i sta ce ti. Ponesi knjigu ili novine za toliko.
Ljudi porede nivo usluge i ketering.
Er Srbija je partijska kompanija i airline is not well.... I am no Dane but comments like those would turn me away from giving interview to any site that doesn't moderate.
DeleteWhen you look at it, a huge lot has been done in just 3 years. Yes there is a lot of room to improve but when I remember what Jat looked like in its last year and the 5 planes they had functioning in the summer of 2013, Air Serbia is a world apart. You couldn't imagine even a proper meal on Jat two years ago let alone a menu, wi-fi, pillows, blankets and a pleasant crew you get today. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Jat hater. I liked the airline even with all its shortcomings but it's incomparable with what we have today. Jat in the state it was in 2013 probably wouldn't have survived the winter. I know there are a lot of people who either hate or adore Air Serbia and both have a special set of sunglasses on when they view Air Serbia. I think the airline is a massive improvement on what we had and is actually competitive in today's market unlike what we had three years ago. 3 years ago it was incomprehensible to even think Jat would fly to Zagreb let alone New York. There is still a long way to go and they have to face some new challenges today. I know there is often arguments about taxpayers. My tax money has gone into so many things in this country for absolutely nothing. My taxes pay so many people in the public sector who play solitaire each day and do nothing. My tax money payed for Jat's 5 functioning planes in 2013. At least with this airline I do see some improvement and have some kind of a benefit returned back. Good luck to them.
ReplyDeleteI must admit the video is nice :)
ReplyDeleteWith all due respect to Admin but in today’s posting I don’t see any real news about Air Serbia (nice pictures though!).
ReplyDeleteIf the discussion however goes around Air Serbia I will use this opportunity to make a few observations that demonstrate that JU is slowly but surely deviating from the “boutique” service they claim(ed) to aim for...1) scheduled flights are getting cancelled 2) interesting fact about early morning departures for AMS and CDG is that they alternate in delays (they take turns every second day) 3) pillows and cutlery have disappeared 4) catering quality offering in both economy and J has gone down 5) major JFK reduction in flights is not well communicated in advance 6) ATR fleet is tired and needs replacement but no plans at all in that direction. The overall impression is that quality of service is deteriorating and that can also be witnessed by many recent mediocre scores in Skytrax reviews.
1) All carriers cancel scheduled flights sometimes. 2) There may be something strange with AMS/CDG but JU's OTP is still very high and satisfactory. 3) Pillows are there, you just have to ask for them and the crew will get them (they don't put them on all seats in advance because it is clearly the fastest way for pillows to disappear from the aircraft) 3a) metal cutlery would be a nice detail but does not make a key difference between a boutique and non-boutique airline. 4) Catering went down on flights <60 mins while on flights between 60-120 mins it remained on the satisfactory level and on flights >120 mins it is of bespoke quality. 5) I agree, they should have communicated it way in advance. 6) Are you sure there are no plans whatsoever to replace ATRs?
DeleteIt all depends on your standards and what you consider boutique to be ... to me this associates with above average and I don't consider JU today to be above average in any aspect of operations. I am not a hater and I would love it to be exceptional but reality is somewhat different. i sure haven't heard of any plans for replacing the ATR's ... have you?
DeleteWhen you say "above average", what is your benchmark? Which European airline of similar size you consider above average and would like JU to reach its level in terms of % of cancellations, OTP, pillows, cutlery, catering, JFK flights and regional fleet?
DeleteI haven't heard of any plans to replace ATRs but just because I haven't heard of them does not necessarily mean they do not exist in the airline.

DeletePlease stop trolling.
Sorry Anon. 13.02. Anon. 11.19 and 12.58 were trolling, not you.
DeleteAnon. 14.10
Anon 11:19 is absolutely correct...his point is correct, the service is going downhill!
DeleteAnon. 19.13. Please stop trolling.
Delete1) scheduled flights do get cancelled from time to time in all airlines, regardless of size.
Delete2) Pillows and blankets are there. On shorter flights, they are in the overhead stowages. This is because not everyone will use them on short sectors and large amounts were being taken off the aircraft, which costs the company a lot to replace.
3) Please share a photo of this plastic cutlery as I have always received metal, Air Serbia branded cutlery. I have many photos of the meals on JU which I have shared in the past.
4) Regional fleet replacement has been mentioned in a couple of articles here. A decision is yet to be made.
http://www.exyuaviation.com/2016/09/ex-yu-airlines-gear-up-for-fleet-renewal.html
SJJ needs to be double daily to facilitate connections to JFK and other destinations. As far as I know loads are solid on this route
ReplyDeleteProblem is that SJJ is closed for the night and have rejected a couple of airlines from operating during the night. A night turn around would work well in connecting pax to more destinations than just JFK.

ReplyDeleteZanimljiv clanak od Purgera
http://tangosix.rs/2016/25/10/prodaje-li-croatia-airlines-nacionalno-blago/
Delete"That's not how it works my friend. Also airlines are selling slots ALL THE TIME so if JU had the money they could buy them from someone". Zavrsen citat.
ACL received applications from dozens of airlines for LHR slots that were unsuccessful. Among them is again Air Serbia with request for 10 slots. Please check the facts before posting.

Deletethere is a whole conversation about it on airliners.net
Basically only a decision has been made. This still needs to be approved, to which there will be a lot of resistance from NIMBY lobbyists. 3 surrounding villages seem to be planned for demolition, which means people will need to be compensated. This too will take time...and cost a lot of money.

DeleteYou check your own first, JU applied once in 2014 and that was it.
Thanks for noticing. "Again" is the only word that should have been edited out, as it was posted from the phone. Everything else is correct, unlike other posts.
