Belgrade to get new China, Canada flights

The Serbian Minister for Construction, Transport and Infrastructure, Zorana Mihajlović, has said that flights from Belgrade to a second destination in China and a city in Canada will be announced later this year. Although the Minister did not elaborate in further detail, it follows on from similar statements made by the Chinese Ambassador to Serbia, Li Manchang, who confirmed that talks are underway for the introduction of flights between Shanghai and Belgrade, after Hainan Airlines established services from Beijing to the Serbian capital via Prague last September. Meanwhile, Serbia and Canada plan to resume nonstop flights in the near future after the two countries signed a bilateral Air Service Agreement last month, almost twelve years after the deal was initially drafted.

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport anticipates for its busiest summer season on record with 36 airlines to maintain flights to 63 scheduled and 29 charter destinations. Despite Air Serbia decreasing its flight offering this year and losing ground compared to its completion, the airport will see strong growth by foreign carriers, while charter traffic will increase by a notable 20%. "This year will be a historic one when it comes to charter flights. Greece, Spain, Turkey and Italy are the most popular, although Egypt and Tunisia are also set to return to the market. Fourteen Greek airports alone will be linked with Belgrade, as well as five in Italy, four in Turkey, four in Spain and two in Tunisia. Capacity on flights to Egypt will be doubled with three airlines maintaining flights to the resort town of Hurghada", Belgrade Airport's General Manager, Saša Vlaisavljević, said.

In addition to booming charter traffic, foreign carriers will increase their operations to the Serbian capital. Etihad Airways will add an extra five weekly flights for a total of twelve starting July 1, while the likes of LOT, TAROM, Vueling, Belavia, Transavia, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Swiss International Air Lines have also increased their frequencies. easyJet will launch a new service between Berlin and Belgrade, while Russia's Red Wings Airlines will become the third carrier to maintain flights from Moscow. On the other hand, Iran's Kish Airlines, which intended on introducing services from Shiraz, and applied for a permit to do so, has scrapped its plans. Belgrade Airport estimates handling 5.6 million passengers this year, up some 5% on 2017.

Despite Air Serbia's decreasing passenger share in Belgrade, the airline plans to operate twice as many flights through its dedicated charter brand Aviolet this summer. During the upcoming period, Aviolet will run an additional 140 flights compared to 2017, with 750 extra flight hours. At the same time, following a three-year hiatus, Aviolet will resume flights to Hurghada in Egypt. Serbia’s national airline will maintain its charter services using Boeing 737 and Airbus A319 aircraft. “During the vacation season, Air Serbia will be cooperating with tour operators from Serbia to maintain flights toward the most popular Mediterranean destinations. After three years, we are again offering flights to Hurghada, while Air Serbia will have a significantly larger number of flights toward summer destinations on the coast of Turkey", the company's CEO said, Duncan Naysmith, said.

Charter traffic is impressive this year. I remember in the past JU would operate three to four flights per day while this year they easily operate 7 or 8.
Let's hope these charter flights help them stabilize their finances.

It's also interesting that both Aegean and Ellinar have a strong charter presence this year as well. Aegean has flights from both Rhodes and Heraklion.

    3. Anonymous09:30

I was really surprised to learn that JU had only 140 return charter flights last season or aproximately 3 a day as Nemjee said. One B737 was sufficient for that. Current double traffic they will be able to maintain with two boings and some rescheduling on A319 if something goes wrong with good old boeings.

      Delete
    4. JATBEGMEL10:24

The B733's are a nice addition to have however are not that young to abuse with tight schedules. JU realistically only has room with the A319 between 2300 and 0600 as well as with the 1 ac waiting to fly out to LHR at 10,30am.

JU really needs to focus on what to do with their A330 that sits in BEG 4 days a week during the winter. That would be impressive.

      Delete
    5. Anonymous10:41

They do not have a clear strategy about anything, let alone trying to organise winter charters together with travel agencies. Chartering such a big plane is risky for agencies, but JU would engage more in organising and marketing that could be sustainable.

      Delete
    6. Nemjee10:46

Actually the A319 that flies to London either comes from TLV that left the previous night or from TGD that departs in the morning.

So you say two B737 are unreliable to make three carter rotations eacj with some 12h flying hours during the peak of holiday season?

      Delete
    8. JATBEGMEL11:56

      @ nemjee

not always is that the case. The TGD departure is usually an ATR and TLV is scheduled in a way to keep it on ground longer than needed (around 3h).

      @ anonymous 10,56am

Jat didnt have great reliability with the B733's when their entire network depended on them. Theyve become older since. That doest mean theyre bad aircraft either.

      Delete
    9. Nemjee15:10

Morning TGD is a mix, I just checked and in recent times it was mostly on the A319. It probably has to do with the availability of the Atrs.
As for TLV, it has to sit that long there as they don't have better slots.

      Delete
    10. Anonymous15:27

There are slot issues at TLV?

      Delete
    11. Nemjee16:47

Yes, TLV is really overcrowded so it's not easy to find convenient slots for the schedule JU needs. Many airlines fly into Tel Aviv in the middle of the night.

      Delete
    12. Anonymous17:01

But it actually fits well in JU schedule for transfers? Plus you can land in TLV during night which you cannot in most of European airports so it is convenient for JU to utilize an aircraft over night. Or they loose passengers travelling just to Belgrade due to this schedule?

      Delete
    13. Nemjee22:41

It's convenient in one direction, that is when it departs BEG after midnight. Return flight only connects onto London while other destinations such as JFK and the region have a longer connection.

Flights operate regularly twice a week, you make it seem as if they are cancelling every second flight.

Hainan experienced financial difficulties and they were taken over by the Chinese government.

Company was in trouble, now the situation is much better because the Chinese government is providing them with the necessary liquidity.
Given the sharp rise of Chinese arrivals to Serbia, I am sure PEK-BEG will be seeing more flights in the future.

Hainan carries a lot of cargo on this route. That should help as well.

    10. Anonymous10:35

Everybody is talking about rise of Chinese visitors to Serbia and statistics do prove that, yet Hainan is still offering just around 200 seats weekly?!

      Delete
    11. Nemjee10:47

Yes because a large number of these visitors comes via other airlines such as SU, TK, QR, EY ... the other day there was a group of some 40 Chinese tourists that departed on TK to IST.

Hainan does have good loads from Belgrade. Maybe they are waiting for the market to mature enough so that they can detach it from Prague.
Another possibility is that Chinese tourists that do come are not all from Beijing. Airlines such as Qatar or Emirates have an extensive network in China.

Nemjee, define good loads. A couple of weeks ago I saw a small trip report on beobuild site in regards to Hainan flights. The guy said there were no more than 50 passengers on that flight. A few months ago someone said there are on avreage 40-50 pax on that route. Now, of course we have to take into account that only a certein number of seats are allocated to Belgrade.

Before summer there were around 100 passengers that boarded Hainan in Belgrade. The number rarely slipped under that. The 40-50 passenger load was in the beginning. Demand to China is extremely strong and there is spillover effect onto other carriers, as mentioned earlier.

    2. JATBEGMEL10:10

      @ anonymous 9,36am

      thats not exactly the case.

LH has been quite hostile towards JU while it was Jat, OU refuses to cooperate with JU and JU lost its slots in IST that lead to a dispute only resolved when Turkish carriers were threatened to have their slots in BEG revoked. JU has next to no cooperation with Star Alliance members other than A3 and JP.

On the other hand, JU has various agreements with a number of SkyTeam members (KLM, AF, SU, RO, AZ, UX). JU still connects alot of transit pax via SkyTeam hubs (AMS, CDG, SVO, FCO). This cooperation with SkyTeam members could easily grow to add ME (BEY), OK (PRG) and DL (JFK).

The benefit is simply larger with SkyTeam while Star Alliance is more of a hostile competitor.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous10:33

      @JATBEGMEL
I see your point. However, I am of opinion that Star Alliance membership is to be negotiated and JU needs government help with that. They could try to win status similar to JP and get number of routes to fly exclusively.
On the other hand, Sky Team partnerships are always unfavourable. AZ is good example of that. People are scared of JU becoming LH feeder but it is exactly the case now with KLM/AF/AZ and to lesser extent SU. We do not have details of these deals but certainly they are not good for JU if they fly passengers together with luggage as a part of ticket to US sold for 400-500 eur. How much is JU realistically getting there?

      Delete
    4. JATBEGMEL11:18

There is only soo much the Serbian government can do. The Serbian government cannot force the European airlines to cooperate with Air Serbia while it pushes for EU membership. TK is easy to manipulate as they are not in the EU and those air agreements with EU are not applicable to Turkey.

JU benefits as well from SkyTeam. Not everything is in the North American connections, JU does transfer locally throughout the Balkans too. Destinations these airlines cant do and dont do. Look at AMS where Transavia has come in, grown capacity, yet JU hasnt reduced AMS as seen with other JU destinations.

LH cancelled its code share with Jat, tried to force them out of HAM when they had the agreement with EK (EK used to fly DXB-HAM-JFK), tried to compete with Jat on BEG-DUS (and lost). OU refuses to codeshare with JU while the Croatian government invents ways to block JU from expanding in Croatia, while JU is keen to start ZAD and BWK. The telanovela with TK continues where the Serbian DCV denied TK to use the A330 to BEG, another incident in the many years counting.

JU is anything but a LH feeder, our neighbours are there for that and they dont seem any better off. OU and JP still make massive losses while mostly feeding LH hubs. JU unfortunately has an unhealthy relationship with EY. JU could get more benefit from SkyTeam carriers with better utilisation of its fleet, 2 more additional arrival/departure banks as well as having the frequent flyer program benefit SkyTeam frequent flyers. JU has 20 ac while KLM/AF has hundreds.

Things have been told and re-told. JU operates an inadequate network on routes where competition is increasing both directly and indirectly by the day. Wizz launched Skopje, Podgorica amongst other examples yet JU cut BUD.

JU suffers from endemic short-sightedness, stinginess and some sick bacwards mentality related to JAT-era operating routes that make no longer sense. Today Tokyo or Ankara would make more sense than New York or Toronto.

      Thanks, good arguments.
I am not so sure about Transavia. That I would call a price example of bad deal. You get JU to feed KLM network for small fee and then introduce direct competitor for O&D passengers. Only good thing, we as travellers are now better off as we have more choice and lower prices on the route.

LO sends quite often their E95. Shame they didn't go double daily to BEG this summer. Hopefully it happens next year.

Would be nice to get airBaltic back.

ANI is back because guests/holidaymakers complained about Airbuses used for charter. Over the years they got used to flying Boeing metal and all of a sudden they had to fly to their holiday while some young hotshot is holding sidestick in his hand. They chanted "If it's not Boeing, I'm not going!" so upper management had to return this birds to the skies due to popular demand. I would like to remind you who retired these birds? Old management under the old regime! But we're bringing them back, everything is fine, nothing to see, move along! I said move along!

JU makes money from the charter flights and has the extra capacity. Minimal investment brought ANI back. It was EY and team that tried to distance JU not only from the B737's but from the charter traffic too. While EY has excess capacity with its massive decrease of flights all over its network, JU not only is being robbed by EY but has had absolutely next to no benefit from their so called partnership. The perfect example of stupidity and greed!

The 737s are also increasing the profitability and the prestige of the company!

    3. Anonymous15:41

With all efforts, two times a week is scenario in which you do not fly empty plane or sell tickets for 200 eur return. There is just no sufficient demand for that flights outside main school break seasons.

Оно што се дешава са Србијом је феноменално! Ниш и БЕГ су радили тако тешко да дођу до овог невероватног раста! Не одбацујем летове за Сингапур са Скоотом, једног дана.

Iskreno i tacno.

Jeste li pravili stop over u Singapuru nekada?
