TUI Airways has suspended plans to launch two new services from the United Kingdom to Croatia during the upcoming summer season and will discontinue one existing route, to Pula. According to the "AvioRadar" portal, the airline has shelved plans to introduce flights from Leeds to Dubrovnik and from Manchester to Rijeka. Furthermore, the leisure carrier will not resume operations between Edinburgh and Pula. Other new services, including Cardiff - Dubrovnik, Doncaster - Pula and London Gatwick - Rijeka will go ahead as planned. Flight information for all of the aforementioned routes can be found on the right hand side in the new route launches section on the desktop version of the site, or by clicking on the top right-hand icon on the mobile version.
It seems the tourism will not flourish this year in Croatia as was forecast. The return of Turkey to the map seems to be too big a factor to neglect.

DeleteWell it's true, Brits are probably heading to cheaper destinations like Turkey or Egypt now when there is Brexit.
DeleteBrexit will negatively impact all air traffic demand. While some demand will shift, most of it (especially LCC) won’t and people will simply choose not to fly.

DeleteOn the contrary, the fact that this is UK routes would suggest it's Brexit related, although I expect the European leisure is also market is heading towards a downturn. It feels a bit like 2008 with all the weaker airlines starting to close down.
ReplyDeleteEuropean economy is not in a good shape. Italy is in recession, Germany is on the brink of recession as well. When UK leaves it will also have a negative impact.

DeleteTui Group recently reported losses of EUR 83 million, apparently driven by Tui’s airlines and tour operations unit. It's not rosy on the British market, Thomas Cook also said it planned a “strategic review” of its airline as it struggled to contend with an uncertain outlook because of Brexit and increased prices in the Canary Islands.

DeleteThe loss was in a winter quarter! That quarter is always negative similar as for airlines. TuI had 1.1 billion profit last year!!
Many TUIfly UK routes all over Europe are axed this summer because of two reasons - shortage of aircraft and introduction of reserve resources after last chaotic summer season with lots of delays and strikes.
Croatia is actually hardly affected.
TUI has a really strong winter ski charter season, that one performed quite badly. Era of charter airlines is gone, Thomas Cook is a good example.

DeleteBy the way, Thomas Cook is trying to sell its airlines as they need cash plus they are apparently unable to invest in their airlines. Best example is Condor Germany which urgently needs to get replacements for 29 long range airframes all 757s and 767s.
Therefore Volotea significantly increases Croatia :)
