The multi million euro expansion and modernisation of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, which will be spearheaded by VINCI and Greek construction company Terna, is set to begin soon. The Chairman and CEO of VINCI Airport, Nicolas Notebaert noted, "In a few months we will start work to expand the infrastructure in Belgrade". A new Joint Venture company has been formed between Vinci Construction Grands Projects and GEK Terna Group named VINCI Terna Construction JV, which will run the project. The company, which recently advertised for several job openings, is awaiting the adoption of a development masterplan, after which it will be issued construction permits and release details on the planned infrastructure upgrades. "We want to improve operating conditions fast. We are implementing an ambitious investment plan of more than 730 million euros over the course of the concession. Environmental considerations are at the heart of the project – plans include the installation of solar panels and a water treatment plant. We are using our significant expertise in airport management and development to improve the overall customer experience, in particular by reorganising and optimising passenger flows and developing retail areas", VINCI said.
Dubbed as an "ambitious expansion", Terna has already confirmed it will expand the airport's facilities by 42.000 square metres, while the existing terminals will be refurbished. Furthermore, a new 3.500 metre runway will be built, while the existing 3.400 metre runway will be upgraded. A total of nine new taxiways will be developed, the existing apron will be expanded, and a new 55.000 square metre apron will be built. The deicing platform will be expanded by another 6.200 square metres. Landisde, a new car park, with a capacity for 2.400 vehicles, will be built and new curbside/sidewalk infrastructure and facilities for departures/arrivals handling will be developed. Other projects include road work around the airport, encompassing some 3.500 metres, a new rainwater drainage system, marking and static signage, lighting and CCTV camera systems. Furthermore, construction of auxiliary building facilities and other infrastructure works such as waste water and solid waste treatment plants, a heating plant, a meteorological station and a solar panel plant, amongst others, will be built. The entire project must be completed within five years.
The Serbian Prime Minister, Ana Brnabić, said that the expansion and modernisation of the airport is a part of the government's Aviation Strategy 2025, which is soon to be adopted. "I expect excellence and that is also what people in Serbia expect. At every step of the way, VINCI has been able to deliver on their commitments and we are already seeing strong results. The airport is a modern reflection of the future Serbia we are creating in partnership. I am excited to see how the VINCI Airports global environment strategy will introduce a new set of environmental standards. As Prime Minister, I am also thrilled to see the connections being made for our skilled workforce in the aviation sector, particularly at the VINCI Airports Academy, and the overall positive impact expected in the aviation sector and thus for the economy of Serbia".
Good to see things are progressing.
ReplyDeleteI hope construction work begins soon rather than later.
ReplyDeleteThe airport will really be unrecognizable in 5 years. Can't wait
ReplyDeleteThey are building a solar panel plant? Wtf?
ReplyDeleteWhat's the problem?
DeleteJust obsession with this environmental thing. The airport should have other priorities.
DeleteVinci seems to be obsessing about secondary things such as noise protection and being eco-friendly.
DeleteOh and what all the other project mentioned - terminal expansion, apron expansion, car park expansion, new runway, taxiway expansion etc are all "environmental obsessions"?
DeleteEnvironmental awareness is common around the world, with exception to the Balkans, most notably ex-Yu region. That's why we have some of the worst air on the planet and people are dying from pollution at a larger rate than almost anywhere else. I'm glad they will put an emphasis on environmental policy. More companies should.
DeleteYeah, toilets are filthy, there are no transport links to the city after 23.20, there are barely any coffee shops after you pass security... but hey, let's worry about noise pollution and solar panels. They should first address small things before going all woke on us.
DeleteAnd who said they won't?
Deleteit is obvious that the first thing they will do is improve the existing terminals which they said many times. Had you been at the airport anytime in the past month you would have seen a lot of construction workers walking around surveying the buildings and doing measurements and so on.
DeleteSomeone mentioned that the neighbourhood is quite noisy and highly polluted. Maybe that's why.
DeleteYou are getting everything - overhaul of terminals, expansion and environmental protection... and you still complain.
DeleteCurrent facilities are not bad except the old A7-A10 area. Don't know what exactly they are looking to fix. They should concentrate on building a new extension which will be modern and up to their precious environmental standards. lol
DeleteHow narrowminded some of your comments are. You deserve living in one of the most polluted cities on earth.
DeleteMy guess is most of those commenting don't even live in BEG.
DeleteYeah because the airport is the main polluter in the region, give me a break. Why don't you ask the Chinese in Smederevo to bring back the air filters which they removed from the Zelezara? No, no one speaks of that but let's rather obsess about trivial things like air transport and the airport.
DeleteWho is exactly obsessing other than you?
DeleteThe French are obsessing and you seem to be obsessing as well since you are commenting and defending them.
DeleteFYI, from the article:
Environmental considerations are at the heart of the project.
Didn't France test their nuclear bombs in the middle of the Pacific ocean creating an eco-disaster? Or are we eco-friendly only when it's close to home?
Seek help.
DeleteOnly in the Balkans people complain when somebody tries something environment-friendly.
DeleteSend them a proposal to build a coal power plant and then move next to it, so you fully support the project.
SMFH Anon 9:25
DeleteLet's see what becomes of it. I was expecting a bit more growth in Q1.
ReplyDeleteGrowth would have been higher had Air Serbia's passenger numbers not declined sharply. Overall, I think it was solid growth.
DeleteJU's poor performance over the last year had an effect on traffic.
DeleteI still think BEG has a decent looking terminal but if the Frenchies manage to built it similar to the ZAG one, it would be really cool.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, good luck BEG. Just hope they do not miss/discard Nikola Tesla. Makes it more authentic.
There is no need to look like ZAG as it should be as it is...Functional building with many shops made for passengers flying and not half empty hall
DeleteAww. I was waiting till some Anonymous mentions Zagrebs' half empty hall. Took you whole 27 minutes.
DeleteSorry frishki but he is right. I flew a few times in the last year and every time it seemed like a supermarket in the evening 5 minutes prior to closure.
DeleteI'm sorry, why is that a problem? It used to be all cramped and crowded, now it's too empty.
DeleteSome people are impossible to please.
I for instance have absolutely no problem with the big, empty spaces. I'm not one of those that need to cramp things in just for the sake of cramping it.
If airports management did their job it wouldn't be as empty!
DeleteLol. That's hell of a statement. Because the halls have to be always optimally crowded, not too much so it wouldn't fuss the fussies and not too little so it wouldn't look like an abandoned mall.
DeleteYou tell 'em!
All I am saying is that they should attract more airlines (LCC?) to fly during the quieter times of the day. Vinci is doing that in Belgrade. Don't you think that is a smart move? Not overcrowd the terminal but fill it enough to keep the shops, restaurants... busy. :)
DeleteBecause it's just like that to lure in LCC to fill up the empty slots. And just because of that the whole airport sucks and the management isn't doing their job. If there would be LCC then you'd be asking why there isn't (insert whatever).
DeleteAnd Vinci just took over Belgrade airport and you are already praising them as something that hasn't been seen around here. Could you wait to they start delivering what they've announced?
My friend Frishki, Vinci is already encouraging airlines to move around their schedule to BEG. SU moved their flight to 20.20, RO will have some departures at 20.50 and AirPost will depart in the evening and same with Transavia. After 19.30 airport was rather quiet but that won't be the case this summer when flights are moved around.
DeleteIn the period of 19.00 to 21.00 we will have TK, A3, SU, RO, LX... That is something ZAG should do as well. Why don't they offer discounts to Wizz to launch DTM or LTN in late afternoon? That is what I am proposing.
I guess bringing Emirates, LOT, Aegean, Air Canada Rouge, Air Transat, Korean Air, Monarch doesn't mean much since there are times of empty hallways.
DeleteAnd that's what I'm saying.
Most f those either went seasonal or went bust so I wouldn't really call them success stories.
DeleteOf course you wouldn't. Doesn't work for you.
DeleteIt's common sense, if something doesn't turn out the way you want it to then it's hardly a success story.
DeleteYou wanna call new Zagreb airport an unsuccessful story? Because couple of routes became seasonal? Sure bud, let's diminish the goods and focus on the things that didn't turn out as expected.
DeleteAlso, Vinci barely took over and you already is building them a shrine? How about your wait a year or two.
Twisting my words because your argument is failing? Interesting tactic. I am saying that the examples you used are not really working in ZAG's favor. All you are missing is CSA and their failed attempt at both SKP-ZAG and year-round operations.
DeleteAnd for those complaining about their website, they have now introduced options to view flights from yesterday and flights scheduled for tomorrow, since this is what many wanted.
ReplyDeletewith many flights departing after midnight it makes sense for them to add it.
DeleteIt would be interesting to see this Aviation Strategy 2025.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would like to see what their plans and ambitions are in the aviation sector.
DeleteI hope they build an observation deck :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree. It would be very nice.
DeleteHopefully Government will finally publish the Agreement so we can compare the plan presented with what was agreed in concession.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Who cares in the end, people didn't care when the one with Etihad was published and they didn't care when disastrous parts with FIAT surfaced. People will only care about things politicians want them to worry about.
DeleteTrue day!
DeleteIt would be interesting to see in the contract if Nis has been limited in terms of passenger numbers.
DeleteWe already know it does but Vinci can ignore them passing 1 million if their BEG operations are unaffected.
DeleteNis reaching 1 million pax will be bad news for JU.
DeleteINI will probably reach 1 million thanks to JU because it will win the tender for subsidized routes.
DeleteI highly doubt that JU will bid for them.
DeleteThey don't have enough aircraft and crews.
Bravo Serbia
ReplyDeleteBravo France
Bravo Greece
You covered them all! :D
DeleteLOL
Delete+1
How big is 42.000 m2? What's the size of the current terminal?
ReplyDeleteCurrent terminal is 33,000 sqm
DeleteWow that's quite big then.
DeleteSo in total BEG will have 75,000 square meters of terminal space. Not bad.
DeleteThe JV has its own website as well but it is still under construction.
ReplyDeleteJV?
DeleteJoint venture. The company is called "VINCI Terna Construction JV"
Deletehttp://www.vinci-terna-jv.com/
DeleteIf anyone is interested, they are hiring a Quantity Surveyor :D
ReplyDeletehttps://poslovi.infostud.com/posao/Quantity-Surveyor/Vinci-Terna-Construction-JV-d.o.o./250987?esource=search&emedium=1&item_index=20
The funny thing about the deicing platform is that they have to expand it because the former management made a wrong project and built it too small. It's practically useless in its current form.
ReplyDeleteWhy am I not surprised.
DeleteIt is not useless, they want to expand it so they have more capacity. Old management did what they had to, private investor should invest if they think the existing deicing platform does not meet their needs.
DeleteBig project. Congrats
ReplyDeleteNew runway in just 5 yrs is a bit unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteWith cargo booming it's getting a bit too crowded at times.
DeleteThey probably want to build it asap so they can overhaul the existing one.
DeleteWhat's funny is that cargo flights use the deicing platform since there is no room elsewhere.
DeleteBEG is slowly becoming a regional cargo hub! I love seeing Egyptair Cargo land and take off from beautiful Nikola Tesla airport.
DeleteNew runway is not necessary in terms of passenger number in the next few years. But the existing runway needs reconstruction.
DeleteBy that logic a new terminal is not needed with current passenger numbers but here we are.
DeleteWhy not build a second one? It will be needed by 2025.
DeleteWill Terna get a shareholding in BEG concession now?
ReplyDeleteWhy would they? They are paid for their work.
DeleteNo
DeleteAnd what about a hotel?
ReplyDeleteHotel will probably be built too but it is never developed by the airport operator. They give land and then the chosen hotel chain builds it.
DeleteAn airport hotel is far more necessary for the development of BEG than an extra runway.
DeleteFrom what I heard, a hotel will be built where the current Borik restaurant is.
DeleteShame. Borik is part of the airport's heritage.
DeleteA hotel and railway (metro) station are needed just like in VNO or SOF.
DeleteRailway is up to the city/state to build. Not the airport operator.
DeleteLooking forward to a nice, modern look with clean and airy structural design.
ReplyDeleteMuch needed. Good to hear.
ReplyDeleteI think the main thing that needs to be done is reconstruct the runway and I'm glad it will be done in the first five years.
ReplyDeleteBring more new airlines.
ReplyDeleteYes please!
DeleteSounds exciting. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI don't think people are aware of the scale of things they will do in the first 5 years. First they will build an inserted runway, reconstruct existing runway, add 5 new A gates, build supporting infrastructure like administrative buildings, make a new taxiway system and build new taxiways. From what I hear B gates apron will also be extended and improved and the C gates will be extended to the point that it is like a brand new terminal. They will also eventually build a full second runway, not inserted. They didn't buy all that surrounding land for nothing.
ReplyDeleteIf we knew which plots they got it could tell us something on where they plan on expanding.
DeleteFinally. Let's see what becomes of this concession.
ReplyDeleteIf Vinci is going to start construction in a few months, who is then working on area between C8-C10 prop stands and the access road? That large area has been cleared recently and it can be seen in yesterday's trip report video. What is that area for, a future parking lot?
ReplyDeleteI think that is the future parking lot. Since it is not part of the masterplan they can start work straight away. I know I read that somewhere.
DeleteThat area is quite large and can be seen at 4:51 in the video. It is large enough for a new aircraft stand. If.they plan to use it for cars it looks too large for multi level parking. Probably just a flat parking surface.
DeleteWhy don't they build proper parking like BW Galleria parking facility?
DeleteThey will probably expand existing multi storey car park at BEG.
DeleteGood luck BEG.
ReplyDeleteDo we know who is the CEO of BEG now?
ReplyDeleteYes, it was published on here. Nicolas Brus. French guy.
DeleteMissed that. Thank you
DeleteDo you know by any chance which position he held before becoming the airport's director?
DeleteNo, sorry. Doesn't seem to be much about him on the net.
DeleteHe is CTO:

Keep up the good work.
First thing they will do is reorganize all the shops in the departures area. After Starbucks opened its first shop/store in central Belgrade last week they will be opening one at the airport too. Plus nine other locations in the city.
ReplyDeleteConcession was awarded more than a year ago. How long does it take to adopt a masterplan???
