NEWS FLASH

Wizz Air will cancel its two weekly service between Osijek and Basel from June 14, just over two years after the route was introduced. The General Manager of Osijek Airport, Davor Forgić, said Wizz Air had given no official explanation as to why the service is being discontinued, although he believes the loads on the year-round route were unsatisfactory by the low cost airline's standards. The service had an 80% average cabin load factor last year, while Wizz Air aims for a 94% load factor. The route is operated by Wizz Air's Belgrade-based aircraft with Serbian cabin crew members. Osijek - Basel is the airline's sole service from the Croatian city.

      OSI was supposed to be a cargo airport to serve that area of the country. Neither Serbia nor Croatia have an industry the airport lost its purpose.

      You would have been surprised if you saw inside Ryanair's planes bound for Osijek. I've travelled London - Osijek at least 15 times and the plane was absolutely full every single time.

    Osijek and Rijeka are the most unnecessary airports in Croatia. Complete waste of nation's resources.

      @An.11.19
      Osijek population is double less than Rijeka, both cities only, and the counties. Osijek county is one of the poorest, Rijeka one of the richest in Croatia. Slavonia tourism is 10 percent of Kvarner tourism. Flatland geography makes it easier to rich ZAG and BEG from Osijek than Ljubljana or Venice from Rijeka. As someone before me said, Osijek is left basically without any industry for cargo or business for passenger yield, Rijeka has at least some, so I strongly disagree with RJK being unnecessary airport within Croatia. Its only problem is uncompetent management and unwillingness of the state to allow it to go into concession..

    OSI has an amazing untapped potential and it's a shame to see that it is being managed by complete amateurs that have no former experience in aviation sector — none! A real shame.

      What potential exactly? It serves 200.000 people and has four larger airports around it.

      That's just nonsense. There are 3,9 mil. people in primary radius (150 km, 2 hour drive by car). Load factor for Ryanair's flights was 95% with fares above average for Ryanair at that time.

      Oh trust me, a vast majority of passengers on LCC flights from OSI are not from Osijek. It definitely made a lot sense to save 100+ EUR for a flight to London when compared to flights from Zagreb. Particularly if the whole family is flying.

    Maybe there's a possibility of relaunching Osijek — London route? The last one served by Ryanair was absolutely full every time I flew.
