Inside Ljubljana Airport’s multi million euro upgrade

Ljubljana Airport's new terminal building under construction

Work on Ljubljana Airport’s new passenger terminal is continuing to advance. The concrete construction of the new building has been completed, as well as the roof slabs above both floors. Currently, the glass and panel exterior is being fitted, as well as electrical installations and drainage. Preparatory work is taking place inside the facility for the construction of a gate which will feature a jet bridge, as well as the arrangement of new commercial areas including a large duty free shop, a new premium lounge and new food and beverage facilities. On August 10, operator Fraport Slovenija awarded a contract to local company Klopa Invest to install and supply equipment for the terminal, valued at 288.500 euros.

Next month, equipment for the new baggage sorting facility will be installed. The terminal will strech over 10.000 square metres and features a new departures hall with 22 check-in counters, five security lanes and three baggage carousels. The existing passenger terminal, which stretches over 13.000 square metres, will also be partially renovated. The two facilities will then be joined to form a single functioning unit. Testing of the new terminal and its equipment is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2021, while its opening is set to take place in June that same year, just ahead of Slovenia's six-month Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which begins in July.

The facility will be a spacious fusion of concrete, wood and glass, reflecting the nearby Kamnik-Savinja Alps. It will have a lot of natural light and blend in with its environment. “The new terminal will allow us to serve peak traffic periods better, as well as future-proof the airport for the next fifteen to twenty years, resulting in an improved experience for passengers and airlines", Ljubljana Airport's General Manager, Zmago Skobir, said. The new terminal will significantly boost capacity from 500 to 1.280 passengers per hour. Mr Skobir previously noted that part of the existing terminal which will not be overhauled will likely be utilised by low cost and charter carriers in order to provide product differentiation and allow further passenger growth.

Amazing! The view of the mountains is very beautiful. By next summer, LJU can be proud of its new jewel.

You are not serious. Give me a little observation. This is the cheapest possible construction variant. See that there are pillars everywhere. Pillar to pillar. Like a garage house. It is in Fraport's interest to pull out the money he invested and more as soon as possible, not to give us Slovenes anything.

Pillar to pillar, just like in Belgrade. Exactly the same construction.

Fraport is development-oriented, but has a very cautious and conservative development policy

I strongly suggest you check out either VAR or BOJ old terminals. Fraport did an amazing job over there. The terminals are 7 years old but still look very good.
Plus, Fraport worked quite hard in VAR - it used to be a sleepy city in winter and now it has 3 W6 planes based, TK, OS, S7 year round. I am quite confident they will do the same with LJU - especially being an EU capital. It will just take some time.

I like it. Nothing too fancy and over-sized but looks quite practical and modular.

the question is who is going to use the terminal.

Good idea to keep part of the terminal for LCC and charters. Perhaps a chance to attract more low cost airlines.

agree with above, most of the people who go skiing in Slovenia Go to Trieste, Klagenfurt, Treviso and in some instances Rijeka because cheaper to fly there for the airline and the passenger. This is why I don't see Ryan coming to LJU.

Plus, If they really want to make it profitable they need routes. I really hope Wizz and other carriers start some routes there to make LJU profitable and efficient for tourists and people visiting their families and maybe, I hope, some competition will be going on.

This is good news but I think they are late in the game. If they built the new terminal as planned with 31,200 sqm and had it completed by 2015, they could have converted the current terminal for low cost use.

If the new terminal will have 1 air bridge. wouldn't it be more logical for it to become an LCC terminal and the one that is already there to remain a terminal for full fare airlines?

They have done a similar thing to the current BEG airport. They will have two terminals for check-in but the departures area will be used jointly by both.

Isn't the plan in BEG to eventually put all check-ins in the same, re-designed area?

Is it really needed? Apart from peak time and during some summer charters schedules the old terminal is not looking that busy or crowded ...

    1. Hah, seems like you have never been to LJU before, the airport was more than crowded in the peak times and it gets worse when the summer charters starts. Employees cant even cross the crowded terminal to the staff security in the peak times and the current capacity is 500 pax/hour if I am right but certainly there were more than 750 pax/hour last year in peaks.
