Development of Bihać Airport in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina is progressing, with the Federal government awarding it an environmental permit, enabling further construction work to take place. So far, Bihać Airport has built a test runway, which is a 300-metre section of the planned 2.2-kilometre runway, as well as access roads to the airport complex. “This new permit will support the further development of Bihać Airport, which is one of the key strategic projects for the future development of this part of Bosnia”, the acting head of Bihać Airport, Adnan Bajrić, said. The entire Bihać Airport project involves the construction of a terminal building, runway and control tower. It is estimated to be worth some 25 million euros and would take two to four years to complete, if enough finances were to be secured. However, due to a lack of funding, local authorities believe it may take up to thirty years for the project to be completed, which is why potential private investors are being sourced.
Despite having less then 2 million pasangers on 4 airports, bosnian politicans still see a demand for more airports.... Nice!

This idea is as stupid as Trebinje airport.
Oh yea, looking forward to the day I'll be able to fly to LQDO, LQDE, LQZE, LQTB, LQTR
DeleteMore and more airports, less and less airlines.

DeleteBravo BH!
ReplyDeleteUnbelievable! The surroundings look simply spectacular just like LJU airport.
ReplyDeleteWhere does that road, left to the terminal lead to?
Its the "5.th Corps road" leading to Bosanski Petrovac, Kljuc and on to Sarajevo.
DeleteA much needed airport. They should reserve the land for when the second runway is built too.
ReplyDeletei would count on third also and even think of building jet-bridges for widebody
DeleteAnd long haul to New York with JU.... it would be great idea!!!
DeleteExcellent idea! There would surely be 1 from Bihać region. ;-)
DeleteBEG-Bihać-JFK!
water right next to the runway=fog.
ReplyDeleteflooding.
DeleteTsunami!
DeleteThe abandoned Željava Air Base is only about 5-6 km from Bihać on the Croatia/BiH border, but mostly in Croatia. The existing runway (albeit in poor condition) is 2.5 km long.
ReplyDeletePerhaps BiH government could have made a deal to lease the land there for Bihać airport.
Terrible idea. It would be just more expansive.
DeleteBiggest problem is cooperation between two former Yugo republics.
DeleteOther than that, where there is a will there is a way. I would imagine that this region of Croatia would benefit from a nearby airport. And there would be no expropriation costs as there is now.
It surely could have worked at Zeljava AFB. An airport 50/50 jointly operated between BiH and HR. See for example Switzerland / France in Geneva and Basel. Notice that SUI is also outside of EU same as BiH.
DeleteThis airport - if done correctly - which clearly is not the case here! could have worked out well. They seem to plan realistically only with a 2200m runway but enough for 320/737 but not megalomaniacal as Trebinje. This airport could have a much better perspective than Trebinje and much more use for both countries also cos there is not immediate strong competition of other areas close by. LCC flights mainly for VFR plus for tourism (Plitvice right next to it!) and few outgoing charters to Turkey or Egypt should be realistic.
Impossible. Up to now, Croatia refused even to talk about this....
DeleteDoes a 2,2km runway allow landing a 320 or 321? I mean the TZL one is 2,5km.
ReplyDeleteAnything 1800m or longer is reasonable for 737/A320.
DeleteThey can do with less, but it could become restrictive in the winter.
You mean summer?
DeleteThanks, this makes sense now. This airport will be designed to serve either W6 or FR.
DeleteSo after Croatia Bosnia will have the most airports in the region.
ReplyDeleteNice.
airport in every village. Nice Bosnia. In the mean time, people are fleeing abroad, since life is so nice...
ReplyDeleteAnd NOT building this and other airports will stop them?
DeleteLocation is few km from the city, few meters from emerald coloured river... simply HORRIBLE! They are are about to destroy life quality there and make huge problem for the future.
