Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport handled some 535.500 passengers in July, down 27.1% on the same month during the pre-pandemic 2019. During the first seven months of the year, Belgrade Airport welcomed 1.5 million travellers through its doors, which is down 56.4% on the same period in 2019. The airport maintained its position as the busiest in the former Yugoslavia. Between January and July, Air Serbia accounted for 48.3% of Belgrade’s capacity, followed by Wizz Air with 12.2% and Lufthansa with 6.3% of all seats.
There were days in July where it felt like BEG was significantly busier than EVER. The good news is that the airport will be expanded pretty soon. Now the airport needs to make a domestic arrivals section.
ReplyDeleteClosure of A1 to A4 create true chaos. Even BEG didn't expect demand to recover so fast! Hopefully they open the new areas soon so that we can breathe when traveling. Right now the whole airport is a construction zone.

My dear, beloved Anonymous friend. What I meant is that there is still time and those flights might be reduced. Let's please not forget that AF initially planned for BEG to be operated by E90 twice a week while today in August we have 5 weekly on A319/320 and the A321 occasionally sent. Let's be mindful of the fact that changes to their flights are still possible.
DeleteWinter demand is what defines a good major airport. To fill planes in winter it is not up to the airline or up to the airport. It is up to development and openness for business.

I guess you are right. Belgrade has shown how fantastic it is since Wizz is bringing the third plane right in the middle of the winter season. Or do you think Wizz didn't know about WTO so they went ahead?

DeleteThey could fly daily to Belgrade, they have the right aircraft for that route (Embraerjet 190/170).
They don't feel the need to probably since they have JU which flies more than daily with the A319. I think they have an agreement and then when spring/summer comes they will be back just in time when demand increases.

No serious airline likes to loose money.
Because they cooperate with JU and the market has not recovered to pre-covid period for them to fly in winter as well. Then again who knows, if things keep on improving like this then we might see them stick around.

DeleteOne thing I find very interesting is how bad Wizz Air's on time performance is in BEG! Every day at least one of their two planes starts the day with a slight delay that gets extended with each rotation.
ReplyDeleteSeems like this morning's NYO will get that honor since it will land there after the scheduled arrival time.
It's like that everywhere, they have a serious cabin crew shortage.
