Croatia Airlines marks Sarajevo milestone

NEWS FLASH

Croatia Airlines celebrated 25 years of continual operations between Zagreb and Sarajevo yesterday. The carrier was the first to launch scheduled flights to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital following the war and has since handled 1.1 million passengers between the two cities on 32.220 flights. To mark the occasion, passengers flying the route yesterday received a 25-euro voucher which can be used towards booking other Croatia Airlines flights. “We are delighted to have been providing the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina with a nonstop service to Croatia for 25 years and that the quality of our product has resulted in successful cooperation with Sarajevo Airport. The daily flights we are maintaining during this global health emergency confirm that Bosnia and Herzegovina has always been and remains a very important regional market for both business travellers and tourists”, the CEO of Croatia Airlines, Jasmin Bajić, said. The carrier currently maintains eight weekly flights between the two cities with its Dash 8 aircraft. The same frequency is planned for the majority of the upcoming 2021/2022 winter season which begins October 31.

Croatia Airlines initially commenced services to Sarajevo with its ATR42 turboprop, building up to thirteen weekly rotations with the Dash 8 prior to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2016 the airline considered opening a base in Sarajevo and launching several nonstop flights to points in Western Europe, however, the plans never materialised. Croatia Airlines carries a significant number of transfer passengers on its flights to and from Sarajevo and in both 2019, as well as the pandemic-stricken 2020, its busiest feeder routes to and from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital were Frankfurt, Zurich and Amsterdam.

It is interesting that Croatia was flying double daily to SJJ which is great. I can not still understand why JU is flying only once per day, and do not increasing Sarajevo

It has reduced frequencies due to the pandemic, and the airline is in crisis

Because the second JU flight would probably leave BEG at 00.30 and SJJ at around 04.30. Unfortunately the airport is closed at those hours.

  3. SJJ, and entire BIH is another lost opportunity for OU because two daily Q400 precovid are about 20% of of SJJ and BIH transfer potentials, if OU, instead of crime and corruption, had been building network and connectivity with decent pricing.

I agree with you Pozdrav. I remember when OU launched Mostar, some connections didn't work in ZAG because the flight would arrive to ZAG five minutes late. Some other like AMS had abysmal connectivity with 10 hour transfers in one direction. Of course the route operated with very bad LF.

      Zero effort.

I would not agree with P iz R. because there are other historical problems citing Croatia Airlines. OU was never truly intended for profit but for political statement, " it us we are connected to the world" and today times have changed , at that time "proud to have national carrier with our name". You can always brag about this and that but without Croatia Airlines, Croatia is loosing its aviation national identity! Look at the other national carriers in EU and you will see every problem from above, except there is even bigger government backing!
