JAT history book to be released

A book commemorating the triumphs and tribulations of Yugoslavia’s national carrier JAT will be released towards the end of March, ahead of what would have been the company’s 75th anniversary on April 1. Written by Jovo Simišić, who had worked for the airline, the 400-page A4 book details the successes, creativity, enthusiasm, failures, political interference and destruction of the once famous brand between 1947 and 2013. “There was once a JAT” (Bio jedan JAT) includes, among others, historic photos, biographies of 35 prominent personalities who had a strong impact on the airline’s development, as well as a list of 1.050 aviators who flew for the airline from its foundation until its rebranding in 2013. The book will be released in Serbia at a cost of 3.000 dinars and will be available internationally at a price of 25 euros plus shipping.

    Fantastic news. Jovo was a writer of fabulous articles in JAT review and also co-writer of all JAT books with late Ceda Janjic. On this picture, the first lady from the left, was a member of a crew on board JAT DC-9 flight 367, 50 years ago, when the plane exploded in the air over Czechoslovakia and the only survivor was Vesna Vulovic, also a flight attendant.

      Yes please, let us know where we can purchase it. I have already two books from JAT. I remember buying one for 100 CHF in 1980s from a friend in YU, I was so in love with JAT

    2. Air France, Alitalia, Sabena and JAT were four airlines with the best working conditions and the highest respect for their employees, worldwide. In the situation when generally the aviation was something special, very much unlike today. And I am so happy and so proud for having been part of JAT during its last, golden years. Worked in 5 airline companies after JAT, from 4 different countries, some of them big, some smaller, some flag carriers, some not, some parts of two different alliances, some of them better and some worse, but never ever again I found such amazing airlines as JAT had been. I hope this book will reflect at least a part of what JAT was.

      At that time, Swissair was the World's best airline, people who know about that time won't try to deny it. Swissair had the best punctuality record, the best in flight service, the best passenger relations, excellent fleet, even seats abreast on long haul were better than all other airlines - they had for example 8 abreast on DC-10, while all other had 9 abreast, in economy of course. But I was not talking about 4 best airlines generally, but 4 which were the best for their employees

      Speriamo che almeno Alitalia torni 😃 Forse anche altri, chi hanno i paesi. Pero JAT, sfortunamente, non tornera mai piu. Almeno abiamo dei ricordi belli 😃

  7. Looking forward to reading this book.
    When I was a young kid I flew YYZ-YUL-ZAG-BEG a few times on the old JAT DC-10. In Montréal and Zagreb we did not depart the plane.
    Great memories.

      Late 80's it was direct BEG YYZ.

    2. Charlie, bro, as you said yourself, you was kid and you couldn't know it, but it was not YUL at the time, it was YMX. Until 1997 all airlines had to use Mirabel only, JAT as well. Only around 2000 traffic was back to Dorval, which serves as the main hub for Montreal until today, with very limited traffic at Mirabel

      @An.22. 30
      No. 1988, 1989, 1990 it was BEG - ZAG - YMX- YYZ, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday in summer, Thursday and Saturday in winter. JAT wanted to fly nonstop to YYZ and applied several times but was always refused by Canadian authorities. Of course it's possible nonstop flight happened once or twice per year due to some irregularities, but scheduled service was always Belgrade-Zagreb-Montreal-Toronto

    3. @poz ... thanks, I stand corrected. I guess as a kid I did not realize we were at Mirabel.
