Ryanair will host two recruitment events in Maribor at the end of the month for cabin crew members to be based in Ljubljana. Crewlink, the official training and recruitment partner for Ryanair, has noted that the job location for the selected cabin crew will be the Slovenian capital. Although the airline itself has made no official announcement, it is the strongest indication yet of Ryanair’s future plans for the Slovenian market. It comes following the first round of talks with the Slovenian government over the potential launch of flights from the country. The Maribor recruitment events will be held on August 30 and August 31. Those interested in applying can do so through Crewlink’s website here. Applications must be submitted by August 29.
During its talks with the government last month, Ryanair officials emphasised that Slovenia is the only market within the European Union that is currently unserved by the budget airline and criticised Ljubljana Airport's high passenger fees. On the other hand, the Slovenian Ministry for Economic Development and Technology pointed out Maribor as an alternative to Ljubljana. It also conceded that Slovenia is in need of improving its air connectivity, which has suffered since the demise of Adria Airways and has been hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. Ryanair has considered introducing flights to Ljubljana on several occasions over the past decade and has previously proposed routes such as Dusseldorf, Madrid, Oslo and London from the Slovenian capital.
Ljubljana Airport’s General Manager, Babett Stapel, noted last year, “We have already held talks [with Ryanair] and we are ready to continue them. We welcome all airlines that fit into our business model”. However, Ms Stapel said at the time the airport was satisfied with its existing LCC customers, which include easyJet, Transavia and Wizz Air. The majority of Ljubljana Airport’s busiest unserved routes are in Europe. According to global aviation intelligence and analytics provider OAG, these include Bucharest, Copenhagen, Skopje, Helsinki, Berlin, Athens, Prague, Stockholm, Barcelona, Hamburg, Tirana, Sofia, Pristina, Oslo and Dusseldorf. The largest number of passengers transferring through other airports to reach Ljubljana, despite existing nonstop flights, originate from London.
Bad news for Zagreb.
ReplyDeleteNot the best for Lufthansa either.
DeleteIt could also impact Croatia Airlines even more. Fewer people from Ljubljana will be driving to Zagreb and catching their flights.
DeleteExactly.
DeleteIronically Ljubljana will have a greater variety of LCCs than Zagreb.
DeleteEven though LJU is an a** airport overall
DeleteWonder why no airline tried the top unserved markets from LJU?. BER would work, Ryanair just has to get some CRJs and they can fly those routes. Vueling, Easyjet and others are too stupid to make them work. And once Ryanair starts flights no one will want to fly to ZAG anymore.
DeleteThis could be a gamchange for Ljubljana.
ReplyDeleteLittle birdie told me that both LJU and MBX could be served with MBX being used as a pressure tool for ZAG, especially after they aren't happy (to say the least) with recent cancelations from Ryanair
ReplyDeleteInteresting. But why would FR put pressure on ZAG?
DeleteZAG will probably want to cancel/lower the discount as the promises weren't met
DeleteAh makes sense. It's an interesting game FR is playing.
DeleteIf I was ZAG I would be furious with FR. They had so many promises from FR and in the end they got like half of it. If Slovenia gets Ryanair then it will be very interesting to see what happens in ZAG.
DeleteI think LJU/MBX will be cheaper than ZAG down the road as they have less fancy infrastructure.
Could we see Ryanair taking over MBX and renaming it to Zagreb north? :D
DeleteOMG, where does this stupid idea of ZG South, Nord, East, West comes from?!
DeleteZagreb does not have demand for the existing Europort, and not for two.
It’s a matter of marketing. RYR has been calling Treviso “Venice Treviso” for years, so really why not “Zagreb Maribor”
DeleteBecause Venice is THE destination and Zagreb is just the city like Maribor and Ljubljana or Banja Luka. Except being the biggest in this group, it is of zero I portance in the word. Comparing Venice or Barcelona as world tourist hot spots or Brussels as political hit spot who have the other airport named by them for marketing purposesmis not just ridiculous, but it is stupid.
DeleteAnyway, I propose to call ZAG Ljubljana East, not for marketing purposes, but for fun. I even like it. OK?
DeleteMakes perfect sense. Keeps ZAG in check and exerts pressure over BUD as well.
DeleteHonestly, fingers crossed this happens! Competition is a good thing for customers and providing a low enough fare...which during winter would certainly be the case against OU's ridiculous prices, I would have no problem flying from Copenhagen to Maribor. From there, it's only 100km to Zagreb on a good highway and soon without the border too.
This would explain why Zagreb will become a weekend base.
ReplyDeleteThis is still such an odd concept. I can't get my head around it.
DeleteIt’s stupid, that’s what it is. FR needs to sort things out in the ex-yu region. Glad BEG is served by W6
DeleteIt isn't stupid. They probably recognize most of their demand comes from leisure/gasto market, where people will more likely travel during the weekend.
DeleteThey can lower the number of crews they need for the winter - you only need 2-3 crews per aircraft for such an arrangement, instead of the normal 5-6. And depending on the leasing agreement, keeping the airplanes parked for three days a week might not be the worst idea in a low season with low (if any) profit margins.
Basically all of Europe is top unserved from Ljubljana.
ReplyDeleteI really don’t know what to think. If FR actually established a good base in LJU and/or MXB it would be amazing, and ZAG would potentially lower their fares, therefore attracting FR back. Overall both FR and W6 are trash LCCs and I wish an airline like Transavia expanded in the market.
DeleteThis would be fantastic news for LJU. Usually I would say don't go to bed with Ryanair but Ljubljana literally has nothing to loose anymore.
ReplyDeleteWell they do have the LH Cartel to loose 😉
Delete"The largest number of passengers transferring through other airports to reach Ljubljana, despite existing nonstop flights, originate from London" LH cartel really wants all passengers from LJU. Less and less flights from London each year.
ReplyDeleteAlmost all of the top unserved routes from Ljubljana and perfect for LH and I assume they carry the most transfer traffic from/to Slovenia.
DeleteThey obviously carry the most, considering they’re like the only airline there.
DeleteWith Ryanair around, LJU might actually reach those Adria era passenger numbers.
ReplyDeleteLjubljana could really see some spectacular growth.
DeleteIf they are hiring crew now does that mean flights could begin this winter?
ReplyDeleteYes
DeleteExcited for Ljubljana!
ReplyDeleteSame. LJU really needs this and I hope it happens.
DeleteI feel bad for ZAG. I doubt the planned development of their Zagreb base will go ahead on such a scale as they originally announced if they launch a base (or bases) in Slovenia.
ReplyDeleteThey are already cutting flights and cancelling routes from ZAG this winter which is indicative.
DeleteIt is good to see that Ryanair is interested in Slovenia.
ReplyDeleteI see them launching London, Weeze, Sofia/Bicharest, Stockholm, Athens.
ReplyDeleteBarcelona, Rome, Berlin, Lisbon, Madrid would be perfect.
DeleteI root for arlanda. It would cut my travel from 7 to 3h.
DeleteI root for a city in Europe that LH Cartel allows
DeleteSo it would be reasonable to assume that, Barcelona, London, something in Scandinavia, Skopje, Bucharest, Prague and maybe even Vienna are all lines that would work without any issues?
ReplyDeleteMaybe even Berlin and Italy?
Not sure about Vienna but the rest would work.
DeletePeople forget how much slovenians actually miss connection to vienna
DeleteIt would be fantastic to finally get some scheduled flights to Spain. I would be happy with either MAD or BCN.
DeleteSeems there is more demand for Barcelona from Ljubljana than Madrid.
DeleteSpain and Scandinavia are underserved from Ljubljana and there is potential for these two markets.
DeleteThere are many unserved or poorly served markets from LJU. Almost every single European market.
DeleteWell why doesn’t OS start flying to LJU. They are part of the LH Group, so LH Cartel might allow them to start services?
DeleteI assume they will base Lauda planes in LJU.
ReplyDeleteAccording to slovenian aviation portal sierra5, they are hiring for the A320 planes, so therefore it will be lauda, yes
DeleteFinally!
ReplyDeleteI'm really interested, if they announced up to 5 based aircraft at ZAG and we know how many of those were really there, then what would happen with LJU if they want to base one aircraft here. I am just saying that there is a long way before FR will do anything at LJU.
ReplyDeleteSecond thought is for what price we will get FR? I know it's good to have at least something in these circumstances but let's see financial aspect as well.
At first, they will announce one aircraft to be stationed in LJU but only the wings will get stationed. The engines and the fuselage will come from summer 2023 onward.
DeleteThis would be great!
ReplyDeleteMaribor is more suitable for Ryanair than Ljubljana
ReplyDeleteWhy?
DeleteMore niche market, plus it would pressurize ZAG to lower fares
DeleteCan't wait
ReplyDeleteThis is only spin to make pressure on ZAG management, nothing will come out of this. ZAG is far more convenient for LCC base than LJU/MBX.
ReplyDeleteWe haven't seen it up to now.
DeleteSo they are organizing two recruitment events just pressure Zagreb?
DeleteOf course not.
DeleteWhat is the cost for those recruitment events? almost nothing. Why is this happening at time when FR is decreasing flights from ZAG? They will always go where financial offer is better. And currently it seems that is LJU, but that's exactly what FR wants. Fight between ZAG and LJU till FR get everything for free.
DeleteI hope they have more luck with the recruitment events in Slovenia than the ones they had in Croatia.
ReplyDeleteI would be quire mad if I was Zagreb Airport management. Ryanair was promising 10 aircraft, then they cut many routes in May, June and July, then they cancelled routes for next winter and reduced frequencies and now they are cozying up to the Slovenian government.
ReplyDeleteIt seems it is all they can do. To be quire - as they obviously did not protect themselves in the Contract with FR from flight reductions. All they did was to offer crazy prices to FR and now they can be quire and nothing more.
DeleteHonestly I would rather see Ryanair choose MBX. Lower ticket prices and maybe competition from Wizz in LJU. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteMBX is also far more practical for people from ZAG, because it is located south from Maribor. On the other hand, if we from Slovenia drive to ZAG, we have to drive all around Zagreb, often there is also slow trafic in this part. This makes it far less practical.
DeleteWill it work to have both SKP and SOF served from LJU? They are too close to each other as capitals. Barely 200km.
ReplyDeleteIt will be one or the other. .
DeleteConsidering SOF is a Ryan base, it is more likely they will start SOF.
DeleteFR seems to be extremely aggressive in that area lately.
ReplyDeleteLjubljana would be a nice addition for FR.
DeleteFR would be a nice addition for Ljubljana.
DeleteFingers crossed
ReplyDeleteSlovenia is the last EU country that is not served by Ryanair. Hope this changes soon!
ReplyDeleteBut Slovenia could become the first ex-Yu city to be served by the three largest LCCs in Europe - Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air!
DeleteFirst?
DeleteW6, FR and U2 already fly all to Serbia.
I wanted to write Ljubljana could become the first ex-Yu city.
DeleteSlovenia is not a city..
DeleteOk I obviously meant Ljubljana, not Slovenia. Calm down.
DeleteSplit and Dubrovnik have Ryanair, easyjet and wizzair for years now.
DeleteWell, it has a population of a city, so...
DeleteIs it possible to have two bases in Slovenia, LJU AND MBX or not?
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like too much
DeleteAnd does anyone know if Portorož runway extension is going to ever happen or not?
ReplyDeleteI do not see in which direction it could extend.
DeletePortorož could only become viable if they'd build a completely new runway across the street between Dragonja border station and Sečovlje border station. It has a nice flat field with direct access from the sea with potential for 2.5km of runway. Of course this would be a multimillion project and a long one, with spatial plan having to be made, you'd need to buy out the farming parcels, move the roads, build a new terminal, other infrastructure. You'd basically be moving the airport across the street. That's the only way to have a longer runway there. And all above is an impossible task.
DeleteJust forget Portorož. 2 medium size airports are empty, we do not need another one. Less with public money. Portorož is already heavily subsidised by public money, no reason and no need to spend more money on this privatly owned airfield.
DeletePortorož is different tho. It's a coastal airport and it has bigger tourist potential, just like all other coastal airports. I also did not mention that the plan to extend across the street would be done by money from state. It should only be done by private investors. Fact is that if they'd decide to do it, they'd get a cool airport for the summer months and would have an amazing potential for summer growth. Just the fact where it's located it great. People love coastal towns during summer and will pay to fly there and be car-less for their vacation if everything is so close anyway. People flying to MBX or LJU need to rent a car to enjoy their summer at the coast or pay a ridiculous amount to get shuttled there. You also lose time with that, both there and back.
DeleteTrieste, 30 km to the North, struggling, Rijeka, 50 km to the South, struggling, Pula, 60 km to the South, not at its best, Ljubljana, 90 km to the West, almost empty. Are you for real expecting for Potoroz all these to be done? And why, to have another empty airport around? And it's not my opinion for Portoroz only, I think the same about similar plans for Losinj, Varazdin, Bihac, Trebinje, Novi Sad, Uzice. Simply not needed, too big investment to get almost nothing in return
DeleteExactly
DeleteI think Ryanair has been very much targeting Slovenian market with its Zagreb flights. All those leisure destinations are, in my opinion, primarily catering for Slovenians.
ReplyDeleteAgree.
DeleteIt is time all these Slovenians to fly from their own country now.
But in ZAG they can target both Croatians, Slovenians, tourists, gastarbeiters and locals flying... in LJU/MBX there won't be as much gastarbeiters to fill the planes. I used ryanair on several occasions from EIN to ZAG and was always packed with Croatian and Bosnian gastarbeiters flying to ZAG for a long weekend, I think they will definitely miss that in LJU and MBX. Also Croats will use LJU less than Slovenians use ZAG. Because ZAG has more flights and Croatia has more airports that people from ZAG can also use especially from march to the end of october.
DeleteThat's right ... And even more, Zagrepčani don't fly unless for work or as gastarbajteri. They travel to Croatian costs and that's enough for them.
DeleteHahahahahahahaha, you are right, that's why Zagreb has 3 million passengers, without transfers like in BEG or tourists like in SPU, and 20 foreign airlines serving it. Basically they are all there only for Slovenians. Maybe you should grow up...
DeleteZAG has transfers to the coast.
DeletePOZDRAV , take your MADication and calm down please !
Delete😃
DeleteZAG has a nice new terminal, but it is empty.
DeleteZAG'S terminal is really nice. Thanks god LJU also got a new terminal. The old one was totally out of date. Also good that LJU got additional space for future growth.
DeleteI would speculate that they are looking into flights from MBX, not LJU.
ReplyDeleteTheir job ad states that people will be stationed in Ljubljana. If they wanted to open a base in Maribor they would advertise for people to be based in Maribor.
DeleteI did not see that. Funny enough then that they will held the interviews in Maribor.
DeleteActually, the job ad does not seem to state the stationing location: https://careers.ryanair.com/search/#job/D232496A91, https://careers.ryanair.com/search/#job/0F73351A26
DeleteIt only says - Location: Slovenia
DeleteFollow the link in the article. It says Ljubljana.
DeleteI'm pretty sure location is the place where the roadshow will take place - it should have been Maribor. For example, Lauda does not have a base in Romania, yet the stated location is Bucharest: https://www.crewlink.ie/recruitment/jobs/view/1678
DeleteNo that is not correct. The location of the roadshow is Maribor, with the hotels in Maribor listed where the event takes place. The location where people will work from is Ljubljana.
DeleteIn Maribor can get cheaper workforce than in western part of Slovenia
Delete@18:42
DeleteRyanair has never recruited people for a specific base. Not even pilots. They can offer you a multitude of bases, but (depending on the demand) they'll never guarantee you a specific base. I'd be seriously surprised if they started recruiting for a specific base.
In Croatia they did recruiting (unsuccessfully) for specific base. Specific recruitment for Zadar and specific for Zagreb.
DeleteOther ads on the page indicate location as online. So either this is a roadshow for a maribor base, or someone made a mistake.
DeleteCould you provide a link please
DeleteIt's only a roadshow for Maribor and someone made a mistake as I pointed out earlier. There are some Ryanair bases advertised as Lauda bases, which I am pretty confident they won't become (such as Bucharest noted above).
DeleteI don't understand what you mean with roadshow. If I understand correctly you are saying the base will be in MBX and not in LJU?
DeleteNo, location is supposed to mean location of the roadshow and not location of the base.
DeleteThe roadshow is in Maribor for the millionth time like it says in the article. The venue of the roadshow is listed in the application and it's a hotel in Maribor.
DeleteYes but for it says then that work location is Ljubljana.
DeleteHahah I said this in a comment yesterday
ReplyDeleteAaaand it’s gonna be Lauda again. All of the 737 pilots that have been in RYR for over 10 years can go f… themselves.
ReplyDeleteYep, Mr. Notersberg will take care of ex-Adria guys and the rest of Slovenes in Ryanair waiting for years to finally return home will be screwed again. Those are the same guys who told me they would never let their families fly with Ryanair due to safety concerns. Go figure.
DeleteNever let their families fly with Ryanair due to SAFETY CONCERNS? LOL.
DeleteFair to say ZAG has been a financial dud for FR, Croats do not fly much. The idea of going to LJU for more handouts makes commercial sense.
ReplyDeleteAgree! ZG should work as seasonal base and that's it. Considering the size, Ljubljana has more demand year around.
DeleteGame over for Zagreb :-)
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to talk like that. I am from Slovenia but wish to both LJU and ZAG a lot of success.
DeleteHas no one noticed something weird in this application link? If the company plans to employ staff at LJU, why don't they do the recruitment in Ljubljana but in Maribor only?
ReplyDeleteUse your brain a bit ;)
And I remind you how Ryanair hides its intention with the following link: https://www.exyuaviation.com/2021/03/ryanair-secures-ljubljana-slots.html
Delete;)
I don't understand. These slots aren't available anymore for LJU, so what is the point?
DeleteThe best option will be to have FR in LJU and ZAG. LJU routes are more for Tourists (all year) and ZAG more for the classic Diaspora and Summer Tourists … Croatia will be soon part of the Schengen… and 150km isn’t a huge distance!
ReplyDeleteIt isn’t and it is at the same time.
DeleteI’ve been saying for a long time that because Croatia has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, Croats don’t need to travel abroad for tourism. At least not the summer/beach type. Business is next to nonexistent, so diaspora and tourists are the only driving force for aviation. Coincidentally both are very seasonal.
DeleteLH Cartel 😍
ReplyDeleteI wonder when will we hear official confirmation from Ryanair's side. Since I live in Slovenia, I am very much used to dissapointments from our government, because we almost always hear just empty words which never come true. But let's still hope for the best.
ReplyDeleteI'm apologizing, I have found this site by a weird coincidence, read a few articles, and enjoyed some of the witty comments.... Now it pops up on my phone, and I'm reading despite knowing nothing about aviation. I have a question now... Is working as cabin crew for Ryanair a good job for a young person. Asking for my son... What are the requirements? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteClick the link in article. And it's usually a very low paying job with lots of stress and changes and such. If he'd want to be a steward, I suggest he goes and looks ar jobs from Emirates for example. Much better bonuses
DeleteAs a former Ryanair pilot I can tell you it used to be a horrendous job. Very low pay, non standard employment through agency (no sick/holiday pay). You had to explain yourself to the cabin crew manager if you didn't reach sales targets. Cabin crew had to share apartments just to make it through the month. All in all it was a 'flipping burgers' kind of job.
DeleteI guess not much has changed since they're always looking for cabin crew (even when they're not expanding).
I heard many talking about low pay jobs in Ryan, Wizz etc. I can imagine they will do everything to limit their expenses, but i cannot imagine it is minimal vage. Also, a lot of crew is actually middle aged, do I guess they work there for. 10+ years. Why if conditions are so bad?!
DeleteI would like that someone really working in Ryan tells the salary he/she gets and in which country they have a contract as I am sure they pay different salaries to crew i Belgium, Spain or Croatia.
Middle aged crew in Ryanair? Are you sure you're talking about the blue and yellow harp? My guesstimate would be that the average age of the entire crew (pilots + cabin) is around thirty years. I was the oldest First Officer in my group at the age of 28. Junior cabin crew is around 24 years old. Captains and pursers are a tad bit older.
DeleteLike I said, I used to work for them and I can give you the numbers. However, people need to realize that Ryanair expects you to live where ever they base you. If they close a base (which does happen), you have to relocate. You can imagine that renting an apartment anywhere is not very cheap. Pay is related to productivity. No flying, little to no pay (especially previous bogus self-employment contracts which are still on offer in Buzz and to some extent in Lauda).
Of course, wage is not minimal for pilots and senior cabin crew, but for junior I am pretty sure it is very close to minimum. That is why is more or less a summer only job.
Net salaries in RYR depend on national contracts and CLAs. Italian contract is the best in the whole RYR network, while e.g. Spanish contracts get you 30% less than the Italian. Lauda Croatian contract gives you 50-55% of the Italian contract, so only a madman would accept to do the same job for half the money (plus new type rating and bond) when with just a 3h drive you get paid properly (after all commute and apartment expenses paid).
DeleteThanks for all the information... Will check it out!
DeleteSoon direct connection with Gran Canaria!
ReplyDeleteAnd how do you know that

DeleteBusiness model !!!! what a load of rubbish you should welcome Ryanair they will bring money to your country ef tourism
ReplyDeleteHonestly, what bothers me the most with RYR presence is the “backpack” tourists in Zagreb. I’ve lived in Zagreb for the past 40 years, and never before have I seen so many backpack, trashy looking tourists in the city. This came with RYR.
ReplyDeleteWell done articles.
