Low cost carrier Wizz Air is believed to be suspending six routes out of its Sarajevo base over the coming months. The airline discontinued ticket sales for flights from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital to Malmo, Gothenburg, Charleroi, Sandefjord, Treviso and Beauvais over two weeks ago for the winter. The last service from Sarajevo to Malmo is scheduled for October 7, to Gothenburg, Charleroi and Sandefjord on October 9, while Treviso and Beauvais will be operated for the last time on October 27 and October 28 respectively. Although passengers might be led to believe that the airline is still selling tickets from Sarajevo to Malmo and Gothenburg past early October, as the option is available on Wizz Air’s website, these are in fact for flights out of Tuzla.
Wizz Air has not directly responded to EX-YU Aviation News’ inquiry whether the six destinations are being terminated or temporarily suspended, noting instead that it constantly monitors its network and adjusts schedules based on demand and other market conditions. For its part, Sarajevo Airport has said it cannot comment on the business decisions made by carriers but added it was aware of the possibility that some routes may be cancelled as the aviation sector is going through challenging times. Sarajevo Airport has updated its 2022 summer season timetable to reflect the cancellation of flights to Malmo, Gothenburg, Charleroi and Sandefjord from early October. Further changes remain possible, although the flights are likely to be restored next summer.
Wizz Air opened its base in Sarajevo in May of last year and has quickly grown its network out of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, fuelling its strong passenger growth. It stationed a second aircraft in the city last December. However, the cancellation of six routes, the majority of which are scheduled to end at the start of October, could indicate the airline will remove one of its two jets stationed in Sarajevo. Wizz Air launched operations to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital after winning a tender organised by Sarajevo Airport which was seeking a low cost carrier to base two aircraft in the city, in return for a number of incentives. Based on the tender conditions, Wizz is eligible for additional discounts if it increases operations throughout 2022 and 2023.
I always wonder why BiH doesn’t have a national carrier…
ReplyDeleteTried and failed many times
DeleteWhat's going on with LCCs??
ReplyDeleteThe normal thing is going on with LCCs. They are private owned and when they see that in some route are loosing money they suspend it . They don't have the back up of their government that the 3 ex-yu airlines have .
DeleteThey should also have a research and route development department so you don't launch so many routes that don't work and loose money.
DeleteAnd your concusion is they haven't?
DeleteCan't you see how things change in aviation industry and how they can go haywire in a matter of weeks? No research can predict some things.
Considering Wizz's financial performance, I'm not surprised.
ReplyDeleteBut why?
ReplyDeleteThere isn't enough demand for routes like Treviso in winter.
DeleteTerrible news
ReplyDeleteThis is a lot! Can't believe routes like Malmo and Gothenburg didn't work out considering the size of the Bosnian diaspora.
ReplyDeleteI also find it surprising but it seems it can't work from Sarajevo and Tuzla at the same time, at least not in winter.
Delete^ Thats it !
DeleteYou cannot have both, Tuzla and Sarajevo bases next to each other .
Having two bases in BiH was always going to be a challenge.
ReplyDeleteWhy on earth is there even an airport in Tuzla?!
DeleteIt use to be military airport
Delete09:43 airports are using for transportation of people from region where they were built.
Delete:(
ReplyDeleteWith BVA gone, does it mean there are no more flights between Sarajevo and Paris?
ReplyDeleteYes
DeleteThat's actually tragic. I don't understand how demand to Paris can be so low.
DeleteImagine not being connected to Paris.
DeleteNemjee 09:26
DeleteWell if there’s simply no demand it’s not a shame, that’s how the market works
Maybe it doesn’t work because there are not a lot of Bosnian working in Paris and its suburbs or touristic demand I guess.
Karte su vračene u prodaju i bez ukidanja u ljetnom redu letenja ...
ReplyDeleteYes but summer is a long way ahead. You don't know what kind of winter Wizz might have and if they will have enough money to subsidize loss making routes from SJJ.
DeleteTurning 6 routes into seasonal flights is not good. Especially destinations like Paris.
DeleteWell I'm sat here wondering when, not if, they'll cancel my Copenhagen flight... cheap, but absolutely useless as an airline! And I'm sure I'll have a huge delay on my flight in a few weeks to Romania.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed they're being sneaky with quiet a few flights, for example letting you search for tickets to Krakow, but saying the outbound flight actually arrives in Katowice...
Yes they do the same with Sarajevo, letting you search for certain destinations but they are instead from Tuzla.
DeleteI think CPH will be ok.
Wizz is not a reliable airlines. I attepted to fly with then once. But after 2 significant change to iternary I thanked Wizz and chose another airlines.

DeleteWinter is coming!
ReplyDeleteDidn't know that. I thought summer is going to last forever. Thank you!
DeleteLooks like there will be just 1 Wizz plane this winter in SJJ.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I was hoping we would see them launch more new routes in winter.
ReplyDeleteThis sucks
ReplyDeleteThey should have went with bases in Sarajevo and Banjaluka since Tuzla is so close to Sarajevo. No point of serving the same routes from three relatively close cities.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Considering all the problems they have with TZL Airport management, should have focused on SJJ.
DeleteGuys don't forget that the EU is heading towards a recession and is faced with unprecedented inflation. Bosnian diaspora might be huge but it's mostly low skilled, low paying group of people. They were the most affected by the ongoing situation.
ReplyDeleteWe should pray that all of this passes quickly. May Allah have mercy on our souls.
+1
DeleteAnyone know what's Wizz's best performing route from SJJ?
ReplyDeleteSome routes from Tuzla will also be suspended
ReplyDeleteWizz Air neće prekinuti uslugu Tuzla - Vaxjo. Ova ruta je ljetno-sezonska od kada je pokrenuta, ali ove sezone letovi će završiti nešto ranije od očekivanog, odnosno 26. Avgusta. Ponovo će biti nastavljeni 12. Juna 2023. Usluga Tuzla - Billund će biti obustavljena 9. Oktobra i biće nastavljena 26. Marta 2023. godine, dok će usluga Tuzla - Milan Malpensa ostati obustavljena do 26. Marta 2023. godine.
DeleteCan you please write in English as not every one on here knows how to read your local language and the Latin script. Thank you.
DeleteCopy and paste it into Google.
DeleteHow would one be able to read it in English if you don't know Latin script?
DeleteWizzair actually doesnt have problems to fill these flights from Sarajevo but not at the same time with Tuzla .
ReplyDeleteThey better ditch one of them !
Hoping they are all back next summer
ReplyDeleteSo what will be Wizz Air's total destination count from Sarajevo this winter?
ReplyDelete11 destinations.
DeleteDisappointing that these routes can't be sustained over winter
ReplyDeleteNot sure for other flights on the list, but planes to and from Charleroi were always full of passengers. Really surprising…
ReplyDeleteThan it is really surprising 😮
DeletePerhaps they add some new ones instead.
ReplyDeleteRoutes I mean
DeleteThey can fly from BNX
