Air Serbia schedules first China service

Air Serbia has scheduled its second long haul destination and its first service to China, with a one weekly flight to Tianjin to launch on December 9. Services will be maintained each Friday, departing Belgrade, and each Sunday on the inbound from Tianjin. Flights will be operated by the airline’s two Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Further flight details can be found here. Tickets are now available for purchase through the airline's website.

Commenting on the new addition to its network, Air Serbia's CEO, Jiri Marek, said, "In spite of the still limited international air traffic with China and strict rules imposed since the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, our airline has succeeded in obtaining all the necessary permits and completed all preparatory activities, so that we can launch flights to Tianjin in December. Air Serbia is not a stranger to China. In 2020, we operated dozens of special cargo flights, transporting hundreds of tonnes of medical devices and equipment to Serbia. I am convinced that our direct service will help boost the already strong economic and cultural relations between the two friendly countries". He added, "Our ambitions in regard to flights to China do not end here. We hope that we will expand our network to other strategically important cities in the near future, such as Beijing and Shanghai. We will continue to closely monitor the status of Covid-19 related restrictions and promptly react on new opportunities, once the market access limitations have ended. The ground time that Air Serbia aircraft will be spending in Tianjin is not optimal and comes as the results of a combination of various Covid-19 restrictions still in place. We will continue to work to improve that in the future, whenever such an option becomes available".

The port city of Tianjin, which is Beijing's main maritime gateway, has a population of 13.9 million people. It is the fourth most populous city in China and the twentieth in the world. It is also one of China’s largest trade hubs, with a free trade agreement expected to be signed between Serbia and China by the end of the year. There has never been a scheduled nonstop service between Belgrade and Tianjin, although several special charters were operated over the past year from the city to transport Chinese workers to Serbia. Tianjin and Beijing are linked with high speed train service, which takes approximately half an hour.

As expected the plane will be in Tianjin for 24 hours so the same crew can return it. Logical for 1 weekly frequency. Good luck JU! :)

Out of curiosity I checked the prices for LJU-BEG-CTN-BEG-LJU, 23.12.-8.1., 1280€, but what I found interesting was that when you get redirected from JU’s website (search engine) it says that WIFI is available for fee on JU’s A330. Is this new?

A very positive development for BEG, JU and Serbia overall. I hope this route will stay long-term even when covid restrictions in China are eased. Good thing is that these flights are aimed at transfers from Western Europe. It's a much larger and more lucrative market.

So BEG will have flights to China on Fridays and Saturdays.

Will compete with Neos 949 on Thursdays with B787-9; probably serving seamen crew?

Srećno AS.

Скупља је него Њујорк јер је лет дужи а и нема потребе да се нуде јефтине карте када је конкуренција више него ограничена. Карантин је и даље не снази тако да нема слободног кретања између НР Кине и остатка света.

They haven't opened all subclasses for sale because there are capacity restrictions on flights to China. So naturally they only opened the most expensive subclasses.

And even those fares they have now are not that bad. Much better than Hainan, that's for sure.

Serbia will introduce sanctions to Russia soon. No flights to Russia will be allowed and its quite sure it would result in JU not being able to enter Russian airspace.

If Serbia does introduce sanction onto Russia at some point it will be selective sanctions and probably won't involve a ban on flights.

    3. Anonymous11:35

Serbian government has repeatedly said that sanctions won't be introduced and because of that we got an impressive price for natural gas. As long as gas is cheap there isn't going to be any talk of sanctions.

I am not really convinced about that China launch, in my eyes wrong timing to enter the China market and the route with 27.5 hour ground time in TSN is definitely not cost efficient. But lets wait and see

      @JU520 BEGLAX

It's definitely an interesting move but I guess more is happening behind the scenes that we don't know just as yet. JU has done alot of cargo flights to China since 2020 and I think this route will be cargo heavy. By the end of the year, a FTA should be signed between China and Serbia, with trade expected to jump in growth as a result. Tianjin is a massive trading hub in China as well.

As for the long ground time, I think that will be short lived and that JU will the green light for more flights by spring. China has just recently allowed for an increase of international arrivals.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous17:53

I also think there is more than we don't know. Also even if it came back right away there would be no point as it would arrive to BEG on Saturday afternoon and that would be silly as there are no flights.

If someone had told me in June of 2016 when Air Serbia launched JFK that next scheduled long haul service for Air Serbia would be in Dec 2022 to Tianjin I would think that person is nuts. Reality turned out to be much more unpredictable than craziest of imaginations.

But it doesn't stop here. Prez made a bombshell announcement a week ago about a future destination but airline officials seem to wear noise cancelling headphones all this time. Next-level unbelievable.

    2. Anonymous18:42

Greater scheme of things was laid out when JFK was announced in 2015. It turned out to be an illusion. Six years between 1st and 2nd longhaul is a fact that proves Greater Scheme of Things had to be significantly reduced and delayed.

As for the second part, Toronto was not leaked by some student intern at lower levels of some Ministry but was revealed by AV himself. Air Serbia making public comments since that statement but completely ignoring Toronto is pathetic. It's no longer a secret. Air Serbia should man up and own it.

      Hahahahha you are so delusional.

Why don't you mention that for 3 of those 6 years, we had a global pandemic?

      Delete
    4. Anonymous00:57

Who are you going to blame for other years? Etihad?

More like 2 or 2 and half years, restrictions have been gone for a while. Even with restrictions United Airlines was able to launch flights to Dubrovnik in 2021 and continue operating this year as well. United didn't mention global pandemic as an excuse like you did.

One of the places where strict pandemic restrictions still exist is China yet Air Serbia is launching service to China. Somehow pandemic is not a showstopper for Tianjin but it is for Toronto? How delusional is that?

      Delete
    5. Anonymous07:24

Well we saw yesterday how fast flights to China from Belgrade started selling. Obviously this wouldn't be the case with Toronto so Air Serbia's choice makes sense.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous07:55

It is not obvious. For same prices Toronto would sell even faster.

But the Sunday New York flight departs from BEG already at 13:10

Will the JFK schedule be changed or will there be no maintenance check for the older A330 this winter?

    2. JATBEGMEL15:24

YU-ARB is expected to go for maintenance this month, while TSN starts December 9th. YU-ARB should be back by then. There is no changes to the JFK schedule.

Interesting to note is that a Wamos Air A332 will operate for JU to JFK, between 08.11 and 20.11. considering YU-ARC is supposed to arrive soon. Perhaps delivery date has been pushed back.

    3. Anonymous15:27

It is pushed back on the original. The plane was supposed to arrive in October. That is why they delayed Tianjin, which was originally supposed to start this week.
