Low cost carrier Transavia France has halted sales of its seasonal flights between Paris Orly and the Slovenian capital, indicating the service may be discontinued. The airline introduced two weekly rotations between the two cities during the 2022 summer season, from late April until late October. At the same time, it also introduced operations from the French capital to Podgorica, which will be restored next April. The development has no impact on Transavia’s Amsterdam – Ljubljana service which will continue to be maintained. Transavia France still has two weekly flights to the Slovenian capital listed in the Global Distribution System, however, availability has been zeroed out to prevent ticket sales. The airline has been contacted for comment.
Transavia France has no direct competition on flights between Orly and Ljubljana, while services between Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport and the Slovenian capital are maintained by the budget carrier’s parent company Air France. Jointly, the two handled 75.347 travellers between the two cities during the first three quarters of the year, making it one of Ljubljana’s busiest routes. The figure represents a 6.7% decrease on the same period during the pre-pandemic 2019, when flights were maintained by Air France and Adria Airways. In June, the French national carrier introduced a second daily flight to the Slovenian capital, exceeding its pre-Covid capacity levels.
Ljubljana recently saw Wizz Air discontinue one of its two routes to Slovenia’s busiest airport, ending operations from Charleroi after over a decade of operations. In October, the operator of Ljubljana Airport, Fraport Slovenija, held talks with the Slovenian government to seek ways to improve the country’s air connectivity. During the meeting with the Ministry for Infrastructure, as well the Ministry for Economic Development and Technology, the two sides also discussed amendments to the Aviation Act and the lifting of Covid measures related to retail, which included the closure of the airport’s shops on Sundays. The latter was recently lifted by the government.
Just goes to show that pricing model of LJU is absolutely not attractive for LLCs
ReplyDeleteIt is now becoming more than obvious. Don't know why they were meeting with the government exactly.
DeleteWhy am I not surprised...
ReplyDeleteAdria vrati se, sve ti je oprosteno..
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteAgree!
DeleteHardly.
DeletePeople drove to neighbouring airports all the time when JP was still around. The only difference is now we don’t have to pay 50 million every once and again for this privilege.
Deleteand there is small difference that we are missing more than 1 million passengers but who care. and if every once is once per 10 year than I think that's not bad at all. Now we are paying 2-3 mio per year for what, to have 50% less passengers? Very smart..
DeleteSo far we have lost Helsinki, Charleroi and Orly for next year.
ReplyDeleteAt least we got Athens :)
DeleteWe will see how long that one lasts.
DeleteAthen’s evening flight is not suitable for onward connections I think. At least for me, might be different for others.
DeleteThere is one new Ljubljana route for every 5 discontinued.
DeleteMy hope is those ATH flights to upgrade into year-round and change the times. Aegean seems to be a smart airline we will see how that goes.
DeleteI hope so too. Don't want a repeat of a few years ago when they left after one season.
DeleteThe route hasn’t been on sale for days now. Pretty sure it’s gone
ReplyDeleteDevastating what Fraport has done to this airport.
ReplyDeleteThat's a bit harsh. They are not responsible for Adria's bankruptcy or Covid. They managed to attract several airlines.
DeleteThey let easyjet reduce operations to single route, they let Wizz Air reduce operations to single route. None of that has anything to do with Adria or Covid.
DeleteNot to mention that CEO of Fraport was against new national carrier. I simply don't get it how anyone in this position can release such statement as Fraport would profit most of it.
DeleteIf Fraport really wanted LJU to grow and develop they would be attracting new airlines and doing everything possible for the government to take a constructive role too.
DeleteFraport Greece did an amazing job on some Greek airports they attracted new airlines upgraded terminals I’m wondering what’s going wrong with LJU.
DeleteLJU market is not that big, simple as that.
DeleteI hope they reconsider.
ReplyDeleteWe will be seeing less and less LCC flights to LJU. They tried to reason with the government a few months ago but were turned down.
ReplyDeleteLuckily we’re still dancing.
DeleteAt this point it wouldn't surprise me if easy and Wizz leave completely. .
DeleteI doubt it. London is still a large market. They will keep flights.
DeleteSo we should give money to foreigners but not to our own carrier? Bravo!
DeleteBut has something changed compared to pre-Covid. Are the airport fees the same as they were a couple of years ago?
DeleteI don't know if fees changed but market conditions have changed. You no longer have a competitor in Ljubljana (Adria), you have greater competition than ever from neighboring airports (Ryanair in Zagreb, expansion in other nearby airports) so it would be logical to give better discounts.
Delete@9.15
DeleteI wouldn't either. They haven't actually launched a new route to Ljubljana in more than 10 years.
Meanwhile we have LCC Ryanair from Trieste: starting Dublin (29 March 23), Tirana (3 July 23) . Trieste airport is by car, just 14 km from the Slovenian border. No checks at the border. Very convenient: cheap parking at the airport for many days, way cheaper rent a car than in Slovenia, closer than Ljubljana for many in Slovenia, various tourist areas included...
DeleteThere is also new connection Trieste - Barcelona from March 28th 2023.
DeleteYou forgot about Eurowings expansion in Graz, half an hour from Maribor.
DeleteKlagenfurt is also receiving 3 new connections! One of them is to beautiful Alicante. Not that cosmopolitan as Valencia but the beaches and little coastal towns north of Alicante are amazing. Sadly, it is full of Brits, they are everywhere you go in Spain.
DeleteAnd LJU has -2! Bravo Fraport!
DeletePity
ReplyDeleteAnyone knows what their loads were like this summer?
ReplyDeleteLoads are besides the point. It could have been 100% but if they didn't make money on the route they leave.
DeleteYes, yes Anon 10:29.. and all other google brain-surgeons , you definitely seem to be one of them .. the one who knows absolutely everything from aviation to medicine. Congrats
DeleteI thought that Adria going bankrupt would result in the arrival of LCCs and even the opening of an LCC base.
ReplyDeleteEven though some of us (who actually work in aviation industry) told you otherwise?
DeleteYes. You “who work in the industry” and other know-it-alls are wrong all the time.
DeleteWhat’s up with the quotation marks? You don’t think it’s possible to work in aviation industry and post on ex-yu? Weirdo.
DeleteTranavia France launched a whole lot of new routes this winter and they probably don't have enough planes for next summer so they got rid of the slimmer routes.
ReplyDelete*transavia
DeleteIs there any airline that could potentially launch some new flights to Ljubljana?
ReplyDeleteLCCs seem to be struggling at LJU.
ReplyDelete"The figure represents a 6.7% decrease on the same period during the pre-pandemic 2019"
ReplyDeleteThat's a very good recovery.
AF replaced the Adria flight and Transavia started two weekly flights. So it's not that big of a surprise.
DeleteAnd comparison to same period 2018? that should give much clearer picture...
DeleteThis is really becoming a joke.
ReplyDeleteI think part of the problem is that we, the (potential) clients, never voice our displeasure with the lack of routes from LJU. We quietly sit in our cars or transfer vans and drive to near-by airports instead of making a big fuss about it?
DeleteAll LCCs have seriously reduced their presence in LJU in the last year. Easyjet with 1 route, Wizzwith 1 route, Transavia is barely operating Amsterdam...
ReplyDeleteDidn't expect anything else to be honest.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, we will be stuck with this kind of news until everyone starts using neighboring airports.
DeleteNot to mention Israir, they also suspended ticket sales for next year.. but LJU keeps on winning!
ReplyDeleteWell with the majority of the population thinking air travel is an unnecessary luxury and then simply driving to CRO every time for a vacation, and with the majority of tourists still coming from nearby countries by car, and with virtually no diaspora (thank God for that, though) this will likely continue until a more “global” or modern or even up to date mindset is achieved.
DeleteThey are probably getting ready to switch to Zagreb which is booming right now!
ReplyDeleteThey were interested in Zagreb way back in 2018 but never came
Deletehttps://www.exyuaviation.com/2017/01/transavia-and-volotea-plan-zagreb.html
Surprise surprise
ReplyDeleteWell that’s the end of that chapter.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly, Transavia didn't even apply for those subsidies given by LJU for the upkeep of routes.
ReplyDeleteWhy?
DeleteHave no idea.
DeleteIt's peanuts anyway.
DeleteMaybe they applied but didn't get it?
DeleteThat’s absolutely true.
ReplyDeleteAs Croatia's schengen entry draws nearer more airline will se no need to fly to LJU. It will be served by ZAG.
ReplyDeletelol. now that comment makes no sense at all. shame i cannot post a giif here would be more then appropriate
DeleteDistance wise the airport of Ljubljana is the closest choice for just over 50% of the population of Slovenia: Graz, Zagreb, Trieste and in season (more flights) even Rijeka and Klagenfurt are the first choice: considering air ticket prices and driving distances and destinations too.
ReplyDeleteNothing will change with new destinations from Ljubljana, people in Slovenia are used to pay little, fly a lot, mostly leisure. For foreign tourists nearby airports are the best solution, unless you are flying for business and you don't care for the money spent, additional time (if any) is negligible unless you have a 1 hour business meeting in the centre of Ljubljana and you find a way to fly back the same day.
Good thing we have Lufthansa group.
ReplyDeleteR u serious?
DeleteHahahahaha bravo Cartel!
DeleteThis is becoming a pattern. New airline comes and discontinues flights the next season. Same happened with Iberia.
ReplyDeleteThere are probably discounts during the first year which are not applicable in the second.
DeleteFlydubai stuck around.
DeleteThankfully
DeleteAnyone here flown this route?
ReplyDeleteSlovenia really needs a strong national airline
ReplyDeleteFeel free to make one.
DeleteNo, this would be just a huge cost for Slovenia. I also believe that we should close hospitals, highways, stop financing train and bus transport...Market will take of itself!
DeleteUntil Cartel runs LJU nothing will change. LH Group has the biggest share and it will continue to go up, Fraport owns the airport, even the warehouses around LJU are owned by the same guy that has the biggest share in LH Cartel.
