Low cost carrier Wizz Air will expand its operations from Belgrade with the introduction of five new routes and the stationing of a fourth Airbus A321 aircraft in the city. The airline will introduce flights from the Serbian capital to Lisbon, Bergamo, Berlin, Copenhagen and Zakynthos. As a result, the budget carrier will be the sole operator between Serbia and Portugal, while it will compete directly against Air Serbia to Berlin and Copenhagen and indirectly to Bergamo, with the Serbian flag carrier operating to Milan Malpensa. The Portuguese capital is Belgrade’s busiest unserved route in Europe based on indirect traffic volumes.
Destination | Launch date |
---|---|
Berlin | 31.07.2023 |
Copenhagen | 31.07.2023 |
Lisbon | 01.08.2023 |
Zakynthos | 01.08.2023 |
Bergamo | 26.09.2023 |

The new additions to the network will be introduced from late July and early August 2023, with exception to Bergamo which will commence in September. Services to Berlin and Copenhagen will run four times per week, Lisbon and Zakynthos twice per week, while Bergamo will operate five times per week. Wizz Air will also increase frequencies on a number of routes it already maintains from Belgrade. The new additions will bring Wizz Air’s route network from the Serbian capital to 23. Furthermore, with the low cost carrier’s latest network additions, Belgrade Airport is currently set to see the introduction of 25 new routes in 2023.
Commenting on its expansion, Wizz Air's Network Officer, Evelin Jeckel, said, "We are delighted to be expanding our operations in Belgrade
and thereby confirming our commitment to the Serbian market, where we are the
leading ultra low cost airline in terms of the number of available seats and passengers
carried. From July 2023, we will have four aircraft stationed at Belgrade
Airport connecting the Serbian capital with numerous destinations. The addition
of another jet in Belgrade allows us to further grow our position on the market
and offer passengers from Serbia the opportunity to travel to a total of 23 cities
in thirteen countries".
Massive, at least on paper. August 2023 is a bit far away.
ReplyDeleteNext summer is going to be very busy in BEG :)
ReplyDeleteFinally Lisbon!
ReplyDeleteHahaha... they may as well not open it... EUR 3,627 for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children) in August...
DeleteThey are just entering the fares in the system. Give them 15 minutes.
DeleteThey have very good times to Lisbon, 16.20 from BEG and returns at 00.50.
DeleteAnd how is that good time ? Lisbon should be in the morning, not that late .
DeleteLisbon is highly slot constrained.
DeleteThey seem pretty expensive right now, much more expensive than any of the LH group airlines for round fare to Lisbon, but let's give them some time.
DeleteThese are test fares, you still can't book flights.
DeleteNot bad, but a bit late...
ReplyDeleteSafe choices
ReplyDeleteBerlin is a very smart choice. Easyjet did well on this route but were forced to downsize its Berlin flights and cut BEG.
DeleteThey are obviously attacking JU there which launched BCN which was their playground.
DeleteNope, Wizz launched BCN after JU did.
DeleteI'm not too sure about that, I believe it happened at about the same time.
DeleteJU was the first one to introduce BCN, W6 has followed.
DeleteI guess we have to agree to disagree.
DeleteJU literally launched BEG-BCN in 2019, W6 in 2021. I don’t know where is the problem?
DeleteJU also flew charters to BCN, PMI and GRO for years. There is nothing to disagree. JU was there first.
DeleteThat was Jat Airways, this is Air Serbia we are talking about.
DeleteThose are high frequencies considering this is Wizz we are talking about. I mean to Berlin, Bergamo and Copenhagen.
ReplyDeleteAnnouncement just to have enough time to revoke it. That's the pattern they operate.
ReplyDeleteOnly BGY can be successful as it's one of the largest European LCC hubs, I'm not sure for others.
Lisbon is the busiest unserved route from BEG.
DeleteTheir network out of Belgrade has remained stable for a long time. They only cut newly launched routes, old ones have stuck around my friend.
DeleteExactly arent these new routes aswell?
DeleteThese are so we have to see how they'll perform but some like LIS or BER are very low risk.
DeleteNice to see 4 Wizz A321s in BEG
ReplyDeleteThey are showing JU that they are not going to be pushed out.
ReplyDeleteGuys this is a fantastic development and one that makes me happy.
Air Serbia tried to be Wizzier than Wizz Air while now Wizz was JUer than JU!
After this years fiasco with their operations I don't know if anyone is going to be flying with them next year.
DeleteTheir operations in Belgrade were ok, there were delays but not more than JU or LH.
DeleteIts going to be a fight, JU just increased copenhagen, berlin and milano
DeleteJU increased today CPH, BER and MXP?
DeleteYes
DeleteTo how much flights per week?
DeleteBER 8
DeleteMXP 10
CPH 7
Wow BEG really said Greece and Italy for 2023!!
ReplyDeleteCRL is missing here, they should returned it as well. RHO and CFU as seasonal ones as well.
DeleteFirst of all this is a much better bunch of destinations than places like Vaxjo and Billund - I'm not surprised all that those didn't work out. Super surprised about Zakynthos only launching in August... That's 2 months worth of demand that they'd be missing out on, what is the reason, is it fleet?? The other 4 are year-round destinations so it doesn't really matter as much, but Zakynthos!? Super happy about Lisbon!
ReplyDeleteLisbon is great for BEG.
DeleteThank you Wizz for not giving up on us and for making sure flying remains affordable for most of us here in Serbia and beyond.
ReplyDeleteFor most destinations, if you include luggage. AS is way more competitive from BEG and INI.
DeleteWizz is cheaper only if you buy the cheapest fare as a wizz club member, and the service can not be compared to AS.
They are not doing it as a favor to the good people of Serbia, they are here to make money. No reason to thank them, they should be thanking us for flying with them.
DeleteYes but they are making money through lower margins
DeleteAnon 14:30: they are here to make money
DeleteNo they are not. Three out four routes are just to hurt Air Serbia, no other reason. Wizz will operate just in spite. If losses became unbearable they will cancel the route with little advance notice, just like they did many times before. Wizz makes money by having no competition.
The only one where Wizz will make money is LIS.
I doubt that LIS would work with them. Modest (2pw) frequency and large capacity (A321). LIS would best work on A319 with 4 weekly frequency scheduled to fit transit passengers in each direction.
DeleteCPH won't work either and most damage they'll do is to themselves and their MMX route which is just across CPH. JU relies partly on O&D and partly transfer pax on the route and with proper response (fares) they can whip off wizz.
I think A321 is a better fit here (LIS). High volume, low frequencies. A319 would be too expensive to operate on such a long route, higher CASM.
DeleteThey rely on OD pax only and with such a low frequency I doubt they would be able to fill it past September.
DeleteWhat are you talking about? LIS is one of the warmest capitals of Europe in winter, people will absolutely use it as a city break/getaway destination in autumn & winter months. These flights will be PACKED.
DeleteGood thing is that they are the only connection to Lisbon from a wide area. Belgrade will be the only one between Sofia, Bucharest, Budapest and Venice.
DeleteNo Lisbon flights from TSR so that's fantastic, spiffing news! Romanians should help fill those seats.
DeleteLisbon should be with smaller aircraft, more frequencies, and early morning flight. There would be a lot of transfer pax, since TAP is well connected with north and south america, and they offer the cheapest fares for those destinations. Just 2 flights per week, and bigger aircraft is orientated only towards serbian city break tourists, and that's a big mistake
DeleteApproximately how many new lines will be added in addition to these 4 due to the new based aircraft?
ReplyDeleteYou mean frequencies?
DeleteFantastic news
ReplyDeleteMornings at BEG should be fun next summer.
ReplyDeleteHopefully Vinci will be prepared to cope with all this extra traffic otherwise we risk going from one meltdown to the other.
Ha ha how yes no.
DeleteOf course, I'm not an optimist either. I expect a total disaster most of the days. From what I heard they are struggling with employees now so one can only imagine what next summer will look like.
DeleteThey maybe struggle as they don't want to pay them more.
DeleteIncrease the salaries significantly and there will be no problem with employees.
Zakynthos will be packed!
ReplyDeleteBad news for bus companies!
DeleteDecember just keeps on giving for Belgrade travelers 😀
ReplyDeleteWow 25 new route launches next year from BEG in total. And there will be more
ReplyDeleteI'm calling it right now. BEG 2023 over 7 million.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely!
DeleteIt's going to be over 7 million.
DeleteWith Lisbon launching, BEG is now connected to all major European markets. Maybe Finland is the only exception.
ReplyDeleteHelsinki, Dublin, Manchester are missing
DeleteThe only last bit missing aside from Finland would be the Baltics, really. A small market for sure, but there seems to be demand.
DeleteAir Baltic is launching Belgrade in 2023
Deletehttps://www.exyuaviation.com/p/airbaltic-riga-belgrade.html
Delete"Ooooohh". Missed that.
DeleteI'm really happy about BT.
DeleteThis is great News and With new metal as well a321. I flew on one to London last week and they are nice their new ones. Whilst all these new routes are great out of Belgrade I do hope we hear a real fleet strategy for Air Serbia in early 2023 and some investment in new planes. Having had a number of issues in recent months with Air Serbia and their ageing fleet it needs a think. Maybe if they more closely align with Turkish there may be some opportunities to get discounts by buying together.
ReplyDeleteThey do not have so ageing fleet. At this moment OU has older fleet than JU.
Delete...hope we hear a real fleet strategy for Air Serbia in early 2023...
DeleteI heard it, loud and clear, many times reported and commented on this site. Smarter than ordering a bunch of new, expensive aircraft.
...321. I flew on one to London last week and they are nice their new ones..
Not if you are taller than 180cm.
Good news for everyone. And I don't think they are competing against Air Serbia. They are trying to make more money. As is every other airline.
ReplyDeleteBravo for w6. Am so happy. Dreaming about TFS or fue. Only wonder why they cancelled CFU and rho few years ago after only one season? And the planes were full on both routes. Let's hope zth will stay for longer. At least longer than jtr
ReplyDeleteSve ovo moze biti jos 100x otkazano i promenjeno, kao i do sada
ReplyDeleteSta 100x, najmanje 1000x
Delete"Low cost carrier Wizz Air will expand its operations from Belgrade with the introduction of five new routes and the stationing of a fourth Airbus A321 aircraft in the city."
ReplyDeleteWill it be a classic 321 or a NEO?
They rotate those around. For two weeks they had A321neo in BEG, it's long gone now.
DeleteAnd meanwhile in Budapest, Bucharest and Vienna (among others) 90% of the fleet based there are NEOs...
DeleteW6 probably does not need so much efficiency since average flight time from BEG is shorter compares to the other bases. Luton and Abu Dhabi are operated by A321neo.
DeleteYes! Belgrade-Lisbon! I hope they don't cancel this route again.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely be cautious with such a 7 month in advance launch. Wizzair are in a strange situation cancelling many flights. In the UK, they recently have officially topped the complaints charts:
ReplyDeletehttps://simpleflying.com/uk-caa-concerns-wizz-air-customer-complaints/
They seem to be more focused on the Middle East rather than Europe. Also we see here the HUGE amount of cancelled routes:
https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/221212-w6ns23cxld
It would much better for BEG to get FR, which at least are more reliable at this stage simply because they are more organised as an airline no matter what they say.
Prices have been announced.
ReplyDeleteBEG-LIS return ticket 21.000 RSD. Not that bad.
That's quite good, it's around €170 return.
DeleteThat's with only a backpack. Add a classic cabin bag on top and you're not that far away from LH/KL prices.
DeleteYes but as you get closer AF KL become unbearably expensive, Wizz gets more expensive but still acceptable.
DeleteNot really a big increase in routes, AS opened 22 new routes, and W6- 5.. LIS would be great if they started, but I don't trust them anything. Also prices are not really competing, too high lately ,even without luggage..and you never know if you will reach your destination at all, or be late for hours
ReplyDelete25 new routes is not big increase for one year?
DeleteI really don't in which reality some people live...
It's actually 28 when you add those which were launched during this winter season. So 28 new routes for next summer comparing to the summer 2022. And those 28 routes have 95 flights, plus all frequencies growth... Many new flights in Belgrade!
DeleteAnd more will come soon.
DeleteWell, I said its not big increase for W6 comparing to 22 new routes that AS opened
DeleteWe are now just missing Finland, Caucasus and Iceland/Ireland to complete all Europe :) well done BEG.
DeleteExcellent new Wizzair routes in Belgrade. I am particularly happy about Lisbon and Berlin. All that remains is for that new plane to arrive at the base on time. As for the price of airline tickets, they will be adjusted to demand and various promotional activities of Wizzair.Certainly, wizzair is my first choice for flights from Belgrade.
ReplyDeleteWizzair is also your first choice when flying from Belgrade to ... JFK, IST, SVO, TIV etc?
DeleteFor those we have TK, LH and others.
DeleteHa ha… hejteri na aparatima.
DeleteHad no idea W6 people uses StarAlliance as alternative. You learn something every day.
DeleteYes my friend, people will go for the cheapest option out there and very often that's LH Group.
DeleteBelgrade airport social media already reposted/retweeted Wizz announcement with 5 new routes. Air Serbia announced 20+ Euro routes in recent days but none were retweeted/reposted on Belgrade Airport social media. Okay I get it.
ReplyDeleteYou do realize that they don't do that for free. Wizz paid for it. Same as Wizz is bombarding many with instagram ads for Belgrade to Abu Dhabi route.
DeleteJU should do the same.
Delete5 more routes are also increased. From August 1st there will be daily flights to Eindhoven, Barcelona, Rome Fiumicino, Memmingen and Dortmund, as well as 5 weekly to Paris Beauvais.
ReplyDeleteAir Serbia has increased frequencies to Milan, Berlin and Copenhagen as a response to today's new routes launch by Wizz, but we expect further growth of frequencies on routes to Rome (probably to 14 weekly) and Barcelona (12 or 14 weekly).
I really hope Ryanair will come to Belgrade one day they are the last one missing.
ReplyDeleteManchester, Helsinki, Dublin, Alicante, Porto, Bratislava and Paphos are still unserved and potentially interesting to operate
No, thank you.
Delete23:21 have u used them?
DeleteNo one will fly from Belgrade to Manchester or Dublin because of visa policy.
ReplyDeleteHelsinki will probably be served once again by either Air Serbia or Finnair. There is no strong P2P demand and route will rely on transfers, which means Finnair or AirSerbia, not Ryanair.
We already have plenty of flights to Spain and we don't need Alicante.
Porto is missing, and I could say that Wizz could also launch that.
Bratislava is way too close to Vienna and Paphos is not so popular from Belgrade, furthermore we have many flights to Larnaca.
Bratislava actually too close to BEG. It costs 40e with door2door limo service that most gasto people use. And it would be a gasto route.
DeleteActually Alicante or Sevilla could work on W6 on a summer seasonal basis.
DeleteSo how are Manchester and Dublin top unserved destinations if noone will travel? Visa is needed for London or NYC and people do travel.
DeleteAnon 21:41
DeleteThen how do you explain both MAN and DUB being on the top of unserved routes from BEG ? According to EX-YU, there were respectively 8345 and 5687 indirect passengers from BEG to these destinations in 2019.
Your "visa regime" argument is not viable, look at JFK, ORD, LHR and LTN, all of them are directly connected to Belgrade (except Chicago from May 2023) and yet flights are packed and h visa regime or not.
Alicante could honestly work at least on a seasonal basis.
sorry I meant "... and yet flights are packed and for some have been increased such as JFK to daily."
DeleteWhen it comes to Alicante, it could work like I said, the same goes for Paphos, Cyprus is well-known for Serbian people and it wouldn't be bad if PFO was added to the network.
Porto would be an opportunity for both BEG (new link) and for Ryanair to start operations from the Serbian capital. Otherwise, I don't think Wizzair would launch it.
Finally, Bratislava is definitely a gasto route and will put pressure on the JU-OS duopoly and make prices lower on the Vienna-Belgrade section.
I agree for Helsinki, Finnair is the best choice for this route thanks to all the connecting flights they have, even AirSERBIA gave up even before the Covid started and hasn't rescheduled it three years after. Now that Turku is gone there is less competition and the Finnish carrier may benefit from the situation.
Answer to Anonymous 21:41
DeleteIf Podgorica managed to have year-round flights to MAN with Ryanair then I don't see why it couldn't happen to Belgrade knowing that 8345 passengers flew between the two cities according to 2019 figures said just above by another user.
Dublin, Manchester and Porto would be perfect for Ryan's market entry.
DeleteDo you think LJU - Belgrade would be an option for Wizzair to consider?
ReplyDeleteThere is no need. 14 flights (I hope 18) per week are quite enough.
DeleteThat's the point. Wizz can take some biz from AS.
DeleteI think W6 could make this work especially in summer when so many Slovenes visit Serbia.
DeleteI don't think they'd affect JU so much as they'd rather get people who traveled by road before.
Beg Lju would be great. Friday 18.00
DeleteSunday 20.00
Aka party plane hehe
At last, Lisbon! And I was just talking about it few days ago.
ReplyDeleteYou are a prorok my friend.
DeleteJao samo su na recima jaki.
ReplyDeleteNajgora firma ikada!
