Low cost carrier Ryanair plans to discontinue flights to Tuzla from June 1 due to an ongoing spat with the Bosnia and Herzegovina Directorate of Civil Aviation. The airline commenced operations to the city last November with services from Vienna, Memmingen and Stockholm Arlanda Airport. All three routes are also served by Wizz Air, which boasts a base in Tuzla, although the carrier maintains services to Stockholm's Skavsta Airport instead. Ryanair confirmed the routes were being discontinued for the time being. It is believed the airline has not passed on a 1.5 euro per passenger tax to the Bosnia and Herzegovina Directorate of Civil Aviation since starting operations to Tuzla. If the tax is not paid in the coming period, the airline will be banned from operating to Tuzla by the Bosnian regulator.
Ryanair currently maintains two weekly flights from Tuzla to Memmingen, ending May 30, three weekly rotations to Vienna, which will be discontinued on May 30 too, as well as two weekly flights to Stockholm, ending May 31. Passengers who had tickets booked past these dates have begun receiving notifications of their flights being cancelled. Ryanair had initially scheduled flights to Tuzla back in 2021, however, discontinued sales on its initially planned routes from Weeze and Baden Baden after the head of the Supervisory Board of Tuzla Airport said the local government did not sign off on an agreement with the airline so as not to put its business partner, Wizz Air, in an “unequal position” and cause “unfair competition”. Eventually an agreement with Ryanair was struck the following year.
Ryanair entered Bosnia and Herzegovina’s market in 2018 with services to Banja Luka. The airline's Director of Route Development, Ray Kelliher, said last year, “We look forward to growing in Bosnia and Herzegovina over the coming years and being able to announce more new and exciting routes for next summer”. Based on existing capacity, Ryanair will hold a 17% market share in the country during the first full month of the 2023 summer season (April) compared to 36% held by Wizz Air. Ryanair is Europe's largest airline, the largest low cost carrier, and one of the world's largest airlines as measured by international passengers carried.
Moving to Sarajevo.

DeleteMy thoughts as well.
DeleteI am sure to I had a Flight from FMM-TZL in August and yesterday I check is cancelled and was for a good price and now I need to check with WizzAir how are the prices Higher and I will wait. But I am sure they move to Sarajevo on 1st June
DeleteDid they offer some alternative or compensation?
DeleteThey offer me Voucher to use for other flight or the compensation I took the compensation because I don’t know when I will fly with FR anymore. Let’s see they say like 5 days will be refunded.
DeleteThanks. Hope you get the compensation soon.
DeleteThey will not move to SJJ because they didn't have a base in TZL. They could open more connections from BMX, especially when Wizz stopped with Malmö
DeleteI hope to to get the Compensation. Let’s see what Airline will come to SJJ I am very curious
DeleteDoes anyone know when they will announce the airline?
DeleteHopefully Ryanair will leave Zagreb next!
ReplyDeletewhy?
DeleteSo that the party bots in Buzin can continue to receive their salary through Croatian budget.
DeleteBecause he is concerned about FR losing money in ZAG, which is widely known not to have any kind of demand to nowhere, because Croatians don't travel by air at all 😃. Or he (she) is Uhljeb with mindset stuck in 1950 who finds unacceptable FR taking what is "theirs by God's will" (or Party will). This one without a smiley.
DeleteNo, because Ryanair are criminals taking subsidies from the Airport and making demands to be treated in a way no other Airline could get. Then when they don't get their own way they leave. Zagreb Lise money on each Ryanair flight and get it back by ripping off other Airlines. The E.U need to investigate Ryanair!
DeleteIsn't ZAG privately owned?
DeleteTalking about being treated in a way no other airlines could, which airline got as much subsidies from the Croatian government as OU?
Incentives were available for all airlines under equal terms. Croatia Airlines could have opened all or even more destinations FR opened. Ryanair are business people taking opportunities on the open market. Criminals are in Buzin. Criminals who destroyed croatian civil aviation. But Uhljebs, bots, and similar kind with mindset stuck in 1950 can't understand that
DeleteI wish you and all Ryanair fans the same good working conditions and salaries as Ryanair offers
DeleteRyanair's LF is below average in Zagreb. You can see how quickly they are gone in Tuzla. Wizz is even worse, see Sarajevo.
DeleteI don't remember Tuzla or Sarajevo having Pan Am, Air Canada, Air Transat, Malaysian, Emirates, Korean Air. So, please don't compare apples and pears. In addition to that, there are plenty of FR destination which have lower LF. You also better check prices on most of FR flights, regarding yields. That's for the second An. For the first An. : I am not Ryanair fan. I am not happy FR heavily contributed civil aviation downgrade and prostitution generally. But from the passenger's point of view, they offer the best possible service for least possible money. I am just being fair. And it all don't change the fact that OU is controlled by criminals.
DeleteIt is really shameful to cancell flights in the top of the season and just a month before. I support existing of LCC but think that they should put in some order. Even if that means higher fares, but some rules need to exist
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteIt's two months before. For those who had tickets in august it's five months before.
DeleteGood news for OU.
ReplyDeleteHow exactly does this have any impact on OU?
DeleteThese news are good for BEG.
DeleteThis has no impact on OU or BEG whatsoever.
DeleteJU doesn't fly to Tuzla and all these routes are covered by Wizzair
DeleteSeems like Wizz Air best them.
ReplyDelete*Beat them
DeleteW6 always had a stronger posoition in TZL.
DeleteFR chose to redirect its recources on more profitable routes.
Well it makes sense for them to do that.
DeleteWhy on earth did they choose to fly on the same destinations as Wizz??
ReplyDeleteBeacause TZL is a gastarbaiter airport for Bosniaks living in Germany and Sweeden.
DeleteAnonymous 10:00
Deletewhat an ignorant comment, The airport is used by people from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Slavonia and parts of Serbia. You would be surprised also by the number of tourists on the flights, especially from bigger cities in Germany and Sweden.
Very prestigious
DeleteAnon 11:29
DeleteYes, Tuzla is a popular destination for German and Swedish tourists. Not!
Anon 11:29
DeleteOf course all the routes from Tuzla are there for the diaspora, but there are more tourist than you would think.
Hope this means they are moving to Sarajevo.
ReplyDeleteIt would make sense. Tinewise too.
DeleteTimewise that is
DeleteThese flights must have performed really bad financially if they decided to discontinue them so quickly.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely. Ryan does not stick around if route is underperforming.
DeleteToo small of a market for 2 major players.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteIncoming to Sarajevo
ReplyDeleteI really hope so.
DeleteCongratulations Wizz
ReplyDeletePity there are no more flights to Arlanda. Skavsta is not close to the city.
ReplyDeleteThere are still flights until June.
DeleteArlanda is a more expensive airport though.
DeleteThere is a flight with FR from Stockholm Arlanda to Banja Luka
DeleteWouldn't be surprised if TZL management is the one to blame here. Knowing who runs the airport...
ReplyDeletePerhaps a pink envelope was involved.
Delete^ I doubt Tuzla is that important for Wizz.
DeleteProbably FR asked for subsidies that TZL wasn't willing to offer them.
DeleteBut aren't these subsidy contacts made a year in advance? I can't believe they started flying in November and didn't have subsidies agreed until at least next winter.
DeleteI think this has more to do with Sarajevo than anything else.
Delete4 international airports are too much for a country like B&H.
ReplyDeleteOMO is pretty much dead.
DeleteIt will have Forli and Zagreb flights this year, so not a complete disaster compared to previous years.
DeleteWatch Ryanair enter Sarajevo next
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed
DeleteNot the first time FR bailed on TZL. Remember how in 2021 Ryanair started selling tickets to Tuzla and then just cancelled all flights.
ReplyDeleteThat's because the imbecile government blocked them then.
DeleteUnpopular opinion but I'm happy Wizz Air succeed because Wizz Air is the one hiring locals, has planes based in Tuzla, has local crew.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteWizz Air has been very passive in TZL for the past few years which is also the airport's fault as they have done very little of what was promised in terms of infrastructure development. Hope this will get them growing again.
ReplyDeleteIf competition from Ryan didn't wake them up I don't see how no competition will.
DeleteDidn't Wizz launch new routes from Tuzla in November?
DeleteThey launched Tuzla-Eindhoven.
DeleteΤhe past few years we had something called Covid-19
DeleteThat was unexpected
ReplyDeleteOuch
ReplyDeleteOuch indeed
DeleteThis should be regulated. You are not supposed to cancel flights a month before the flight is supposed to happen. This could really mess up someone's plans, especially for people from low-income countries. Some people save for months for the ticket and hotel to go somewhere. Either longer notice period or heavy fines IMO would be fair.
ReplyDeleteThis is not regulated in the most developed countries let alone Bosnia but I agree with you.
DeleteAnon 10:09
DeleteThat is unfortunately the risk you take when you chose to fly with LCCs.
It's two full months in advance for the first cancelled flights. It's seven months for the last cancelled flights. How much notice do you need? The compensation period is two weeks.
DeleteI'm sure it is in their terms and conditions when you book but hey, no one bothers reading the small print.
DeleteThey are suspending TZL-FMM but are increasing BNX-FMM to daily which makes sense the area of Srpska around BL is much richer.
ReplyDeleteThese routes are relying on gasterbajter traffic. With the economic situation in Europe no wonder fewer can afford to travel as much. This price sensitive market became even more sensitive.
Airports in poorer areas like TZL will feel this much more. SJJ and BNX should be fine in the long run.
+1
Deletelol when i hear comments like "this area is much richer"
DeleteIn what ways is BL area richer than TZ area? The catchment area of Tuzla is much more populated and it has a bigger diaspora.
DeleteWhen we consider gastos passengers TZL has advantage towards BNX. Concerning all other aspects, political, touristic, BDP Banja Luka is in a much better position
DeleteOn the up side these routes are served by Wizz, on the other Tuzla will again depend on one airline and have less passengers.
ReplyDeleteThis sucks
ReplyDeleteWizz owns Tuzla Airport.
ReplyDeleteSo airports with both Ryanair and Wizz Air in ex-Yu are now Banja Luka, Podgorica, Dubrovnik, Split and Nis.
ReplyDeleteInteresting that TGD is the only capital city airport with both.
DeleteHopefully Zagreb soon too.
DeleteHaving flights is one thing, having a base is another ;)
DeleteEspecially the weekend base. ;)
DeleteLCC cancelling flights in the region last minute. What a surprise...
ReplyDeleteThe realities of depending only on LCCs :)
DeleteTZL could have tried to attract Turkish Airlines, or Anadolujet.
DeleteOr Pegasus
DeleteOr OU 😂
DeleteWell usually its a made up airline selling tickets to New York in a A350
DeleteHow will this impact Tuzla's performance this year?
ReplyDeleteGrowth will definitely slow.
DeleteWorst airline
ReplyDelete+100
DeleteOh well. It was good while it lasted.
ReplyDeleteAll signs point to them entering Sarajevo?
ReplyDeleteYes seems so. Hope we won't be disappointed.
DeleteYeah that only makes sense but lets just hope it is
DeleteProbably will start flying in Sarajevo from June 1st, kinda makes sense because I assume they will announce soon and it gives them almost 2 months for ticket sales
ReplyDeleteTime for OU to put their Q400s to good use and launch some rescue flights. :)
ReplyDeleteSo this means that they are moving to SJJ. I mean it makes perfect sense
ReplyDeleteWhy would they do that if they were chased out of TZL by the civil aviation directorate. Can’t see them paying anyone for anything so pulling out of the country now seems more likely.
DeleteIsn't the alleged company supposed to get some money for stationing planes at SJJ? Why would Ryanair pay anything then?
DeleteDo you think they will base an aircraft in Sarajevo if the directorate can at any time claim that they owe them money for something? And would they be allowed now by the same directorate if they don’t settle the TZL claim?
DeleteI dont think Tuzlas management is to blame .
ReplyDeleteMaybe Sarajevo just offers better conditions .
Also Sarajevo has a much bigger catchment area .
ReplyDeleteIzjava BHDCA .
Less than 2 weeks remained for my flight to tuzla and I still have not got any confirmation of cancellation. Customer service keeps still saying to me wait for mail for cancellation.
