Sarajevo Airport completes transformation

Sarajevo Airport has completed work on its long-awaited new terminal building and has been granted an occupancy permit by authorities. Although some parts of the new facility are already in use, the airport is expected to fully open the terminal to travellers in the coming weeks. The new building covers an area of 10.000 square metres across four floors, boasting new amenities designed to elevate the passengers’ travel experience. With the new facility linked to the existing terminal, Sarajevo Airport’s overall handling capacity will increase to two million passengers per year, with the terminals covering a combined total of 19.000 square metres.

The new facility is equipped with twelve raised-floor check-in desks. They have been designed to match other counters at the airport and feature stainless steel sides, a plinth, a bumper rail and bag shelf. They are configured to accommodate airline-specific equipment, bag scale displays and baggage conveyor controls. The airport is also in the process of installing a new automated baggage handling system to streamline passenger processing and improve efficiency. New retail, as well as food and beverage facilities, will be opened soon. The new part of the airport also features a new business class lounge. A total of five gates will handle the expected passenger influx.

The facility’s standout feature, a glass air bridge, has already been installed and connected to the building. This contemporary design element will also replace the airport’s two existing air bridges, giving it a modern and seamless aesthetic. The expansion of the apron is also underway, and upon completion, the airport will boast a total of eleven aircraft parking positions, a substantial increase from the existing seven. This development will enhance the airport’s overall handling capacity by 60%. Additionally, significant work is being carried out on the airport’s electrical installations and sewerage systems. Looking ahead, the airport has plans to extend its runway by 550 metres to accommodate larger aircraft. To support this development, the airport has already acquired 60.000 square metres of land and has begun clearing terrain.

I don't get it. They built new infrastructure so they could handle 2 million passengers per year which they will likely reach very very soon. What are they going to do then?

This project supposed to start in 2018 and finish 2019. So, there were late and didn't expected this high increase in stats in this couple of years. But you are right, a realy bad strategy.

Their 2,600m existing runway poses challenges especially in summer… in conjunction with nearby obstacles which significantly impact on potential payload due to various safety restrictions.

Thanks. One more question. Does SJJ have CAT III runway? Or is terrain also an issue for it to be installed

Yes, more European legacy airlines connecting Bosnia to major hubs and cities will be of great value. We have more than enough connections to the Gulf states.

This is nice. But management has to do more to attract new airlines. There isn't a single new route from Sarajevo this summer. Ok, some airline will set up a base but surely they didn't put all their eggs in one basket. The experience with Wizz Air should have taught them not to.

Smoking hasn't been allowed for a good number of years except in the smoking room in the gate area, and bar area in arrivals.

Unfortunately, the ambition of the airport has been too modest and soon they will pay the price because the airport will reach 2 mil. pax in a few years or less. And then what? The airport spokesperson even said, once the works were near completion, that "Sarajevo was and will continue to be a small airport". That is not how you do presentation of a new terminal.

The airport is located in the middle of a dense residential zone, meaning there actually isn’t much room for expanding runways, aprons and therefore there will always be a limit on how many planes can actually land there. The renovation was much needed but it can never be a super busy hub in its current location. Building a brand new airport in a new location would be the only option if it’s ever needed.

A replacement for WIZZ air is an absolute must though. Direct flights to Europe including the UK is essential if the country truly wants to be connected to the rest of Europe from a tourist and business/economic standpoint. Fingers crossed it happens soon
