Slovenia launches fresh subsidies for airlines

NEWS FLASH

The Slovenian government has issued a public call for airlines to apply for financial assistance for the introduction of new routes from the country, after funds were left over from the previous tender held in April. “Based on the applications which were submitted in the first round, which was announced in April this year, the Ministry selected the beneficiary of the aid in early June and, as a result, concluded that not all of the planned funds were awarded in the first round. Therefore, the Ministry calls on carriers to submit applications during the second deadline”, the Slovenian Ministry for Infrastructure said. Only Luxair and Air Montenegro applied in the first round, a development the Ministry has labelled as disappointing. A total of 16.8 million euros have been set aside in subsidies over a three-year period. The deadline for airlines to apply for the second tender has been set for July 30.

Let's hope this one will do better - my guess is that it will as its perfect for scheduling the flights from November on when winter schedule begins

Let's just hope that some more serious airlines will apply for this one as it is perfect timing for scheduling for winter. Would really need a connection to Scandinavia (either Copenhagen, Oslo, or Stockholm), and definitely one to the Iberian peninsula (Madrid, Barcelona, or Lisbon). But what I expect the most from this one and probably the only serious outcome we will get is Austrian flights to Vienna, which are a must.

I'm not so sure about Austrian...if they still had Dashes yes - but now when their smallest plane in the fleet is E-195 I'm not confident at all

Austrian will apply and Iberia ... maybe even Ita :)

ITA is getting a220-100 which would be perfect for Rome-Ljubljana flights, so I hope it happens

I mean Austrian is considering LJU as a new connection for a long time now and it was mentioned some time ago that they are waiting for this summer subsidy tender to apply so we will see if anything will happen. And I really hope for Iberia and SAS to apply to get the Scandinavian and Iberian destinations. Would also be nice to add Berlin as many Slovenians living in Berlin requested direct flights to Slovenia and as well Rome but this one is probably the most unlikely of them all.

Easyjet is the only candidate for Berlin, whilst I belive ITA will bid for Rome i dont see Iberia entering Slovenia over the winter

Yes I really hope that Easyjet will apply for it as it is pretty wanted route among those slovenians which oftenly fly and it would be nice to have another german city which its not covered by lufthansa. About Iberia if they would start Barcelona flights than definitley not for the winter but I could see Madrid on a 3 weekly over the winter. ITA for Rome would be really good but I just don’t see them applying

Rome will never happen. Trieste is too close and demand will always be big for Trieste-Rome (ITA flies four times a day), so no airline will want to enter a niche route like Ljubljana-Rome with lower frequencies to compete with the mass market, high-frequency route next-door.

Funny why would Austrian or anyone apply now and not 2 months ago. The situation with the supply of airplanes only got worse and if you need subsidies to start flying, that destination is obviously not high on the priority list, nor profitability list.

Summer schedule is way more tight than winter one so it makes sense to introduce the route over the winter and plan for next summer with additional route already running. They couldn't possibly introduce the route mid summer schedule when everything is already planned out

Any chance of SAS entering the market?

There are always chances and there are two routes they can civer in Stockholm and Copenhagen but I don’t think they will apply for flights over the winter for now.

I have a weird suspicion that Norwegian could apply for Oslo flights as it would be a really nice addition.

Have you read the conditions for the scheme? It's a lot of bureaucracy for not much money. The government can put aside as much money as they want, but if they will only cover half of fees at LJU, which are already discounted for new routes, does it really make airlines consider flying to LJU that wouldn't have flown anyway?
