Sarajevo Airport has revealed that the mystery airline that planned to open a base in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital earlier this year was a non-European carrier. Sarajevo Airport’s Public Relations Officer, Belma Čureković, noted that due to complicated bureaucratic procedures in obtaining a license for the airline (as a non-European company) to station an aircraft in Sarajevo, the agreement reached between the two sides fell through. Ms Čureković did not wish to name the carrier in question in an interview to the “N1” network. She added the airport is hopeful an upcoming tender for airlines to launch new routes from Sarajevo in return for subsidies will yield results.
The situation is even worse than in Slovenia. What were they thinking?
ReplyDeleteWe lost two Wizz Air bases, it's a living disaster. These two years together lose nearly 1 million passengers with Wizz Air and around 30 destinations.
DeleteNow it really looks like Bosnia is finally opened up great with 4 aircraft based (SJJ, TZL) and many European destinations but alas.....
We are all losing the Scandinavian countries again and can expect new destinations from Norwegian and why not SAS?
Not really. There is still routes from BNX to Stockholm and Geteborg year around
DeleteWe are not loosing Scandinavian countries. Lufthansa, Austrian, Air Serbia and Croatia Airlines still do fly there with connection.

It's not Cyprus Airways because Cyprus Airways is an EU registered airline and can fly from Sarajevo tomorrow if its wants to.
DeleteBosnia and Herzegovina is now the bad boy of Europe. Such a situation occurs in Slovenia (Adria bankruptcy and covid), Minsk (loss of the European market due to the war as well as the huge number of transfer passengers) and Chisinau (stopping of Air Moldova and withdrawal of Wizz Air).
ReplyDeleteHowever, this situation is normalizing there and in SJJ, TZL will improve soon….
However, unlike us, Moldova has two stable airlines (FlyOne and Hi Sky) and so they quickly took over the gap. It's complicated with Minsk, but like the whole airport it was largely dependent on transfer passengers, and again they have a stable national carrier. Ljubljana still has work to do, but overall it has reached at least 1 million passengers.

DeleteHonestly i don’t believe there ever was an airline to begin with. Probably some tactic thinking if they said they agreed on a base with someone that another airline will coming running to get a base going before this “mystery” airline lol. Either Ryanair comes to the rescue for Sarajevo or a new flag carrier otherwise I don’t think they have many options at all?
ReplyDeleteRyanair is not coming. Bosnia doesn't have the market to attract it or the money to pay it to come. A new national airline is not coming either. It has been tried loads of times.

ReplyDeleteCurrently, Sarajevo is well-served by several other airlines that can meet the demand for air travel. Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, and Fly Dubai (codeshare with Emirates) are operating flights with connections to numerous destinations worldwide. Let's appreciate the fact that we have these reliable carriers at our disposal.
ReplyDeleteThe decision for Wizzair to close its bases in Bosnia was likely due to the lack of sufficient passenger numbers. In this context, it's hard to label it as a tragedy, but rather a business decision based on demand.

DeleteSarajevo Airport is not there to compete with other airports in the region. From its own funds is building and rebuilding. It’s a small modern boutique airport in the heart of Europe. As mentioned previously, Airport is well connected with a few major airlines from where you can reach any place in the world. Travelling in class if it’s own, not the lie cost. Hope this helps for some of you with a narrow opinion. Thanks
