Belgrade traffic to “significantly exceed” seven million passengers

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport has said it expects to handle over seven million passengers in 2023, making it its busiest year on record. In a statement to BBC News Serbian, the airport noted, “We expect for passenger numbers in 2023 to significantly exceed seven million, which will be a record for Nikola Tesla Airport. This summer, Belgrade Airport offers over 120 destinations, thirty of which were added this year alone. During the daily peak, around fifteen aircraft arrive in Belgrade within an hour, carrying some 2.000 passengers”. During the first half of the year, the airport handled 3.286.860 travellers, while July figures will be published by operator VINCI next Tuesday, August 29, in the evening.

Scheduled capacity at the airport exceeded one million passengers for the first time within a single month this August. Overall, during the third quarter, Belgrade Airport added an extra 581.176 seats on scheduled flights compared to the same period during the pre-pandemic 2019, up 24.8%, making it the 21st fastest-growing airport in Europe this summer. Air Serbia accounts for 54.7% of that capacity, followed by Wizz Air, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines and Swiss. Growth is expected to further accelerate this winter, with capacity during the fourth quarter currently up over 35% on four years ago.

Belgrade Airport scheduled capacity during Q3

Commenting on the operational difficulties the airport has faced this summer, it noted, “The current schedule was confirmed only in April, shortly before the start of the summer peak. Time is required to select a sufficient number of new employees, carry out necessary background checks and train the new staff. A total of 520 people are working in ground handling at the moment, which includes check-in agents, baggage handlers, aircraft cleaning and security. Out of those, 220 are working in baggage handling, while a further 100 people have recently been hired in the sector in cooperation with Air Serbia”. The airport added, “The situation has stabilised and waiting times for baggage delivery have been brought down to a minimum. The increase in traffic is taking place at the same time as a major expansion project is underway due to which the airport has still not reached its full operational capacity”.

So lets say August has total capacity of 1.1 to 1.15 million seats. This would take an average LF of about 90% for Belgrade to surpass one million pax in a single month...

It seems that we will have to wait for summer of 24 to see this happen

      Delete
    3. Anonymous10:16

Well if airlines struggle to have a LF of over 90% in August then they are doing something seriously wrong. I think we will have around one million passengers.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous10:30

Especially when we take in consideration the fact that all charters are 100% full. It means that LF on scheduled flights could be also a bit lower than 90%.

      So, possible.

From what I read online there was no room to place a runway north of the terminal. However there is more than enough space south of the terminal building.
Issue here is that a lot of foreign carriers schedule flights at about the same time as JU's waves. Just look at BA's new flight. It both arrives and departs with JU.

Airport should encourage airlines to schedule flights during quieter times of the day. They can charge more if you want to add flights when the airport is close to maximum capacity.

Yesterday when we landed I think almost all parking positions were taken.

I don't understand why some people have issues with BEG. I experienced both BEG and SOF last week that is two airports that handle about the same number of passengers.

BEG is miles ahead with current facilities. It will get even better once everything is finished and once all shops open. SOF on the other hand is horrible and the airport was literally deserted when we both arrived and departed.

Security control was a disaster with long queues since only 4 outdated machines were working. When it comes to the passport control, they had 4 booths open of which 2 were closed shortly after and passengers sent to the other side.

We were delayed because of incompetent SOF which needed over an hour to handle our full ATR. I think 90% of the passengers onboard were transfers and from what I saw they were heading to OSL, FRA, ZRH, BUD etc.
On the way back we got DAT and to be honest I can't wait for it to be returned. They are definitely a few levels below JU in every aspect. Their Ukrainian crew was slow, disinterested and quite cold towards the passengers. Going there on JU was a much better experience.

When we entered the building there was a lady who asked everyone if they were transferring. Those who were could go straight through the door into the departures area.

Overall BEG is no better and no worse than most airports of similar size. It's nothing out of this world but it's not a disaster either. It's just ok.

SOF was built in 2006 and BEG now has a new terminal. I usually llike your comments but also try and make a research. Imo, ZAG as a capital has one of the most modern airports in the region.

    4. Anonymous16:09

I used the elevator yesterday so it worked.
Well, how can BEG get a metro when the city it serves doesn't have one? Once Belgrade gets it so will BEG.
Hotel is not something most passengers need but rather a small percentage of overall passengers. I wouldn't consider it a major problem for BEG.
I noticed bus line 72 now departs from the arrivals area so one doesn't have to go far to catch it. Having two public bus lines as well as a private one isn't all that bad.

So what if SOF was opened in 2006? Certain parts of BEG were opened in 1981 or even 1962 yet they have been renovated since. Sofia could have fixed their airport since they opened the expanded facilities. My personal opinion is that BEG offers a much superior experience compared to SOF and it will be even more so once all the shops and restaurants open. I am also curious to see what they will do with the area past the security control. There are a lot of workers over there so they seem to be working full time to open it.

Like I said, BEG offers a decent, basic experience. There is no wow factor but one can not say it's bad.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous20:56

What " much superior experience"? You are making it sound that BEG is SIN. A big airport with no airport rail, no hotels especially if it now pretends to be a small hub for transfer. Two extremely important services. Of course SOF is not the most beautiful or modern, but still has services that BEG does not have and viceversa. Even with the current renovations, BEG still has a quite retro look like in the 2000s. Go visit BUD LCC terminal and check for yourself. Impressively modern. Also ZAG airport has a very modern look. So, enough of this "superiority".

      Delete
    8. For me SOF and BEG are about the same, with SOF having a slight edge regardless of the metro line. This might change once the works at BEG are done.
I also think BEG should have a rail link to the city despite not having a subway. Doesn't have to be a subway/metro. An additional link to the regular urban rail service should suffice.
ZAG definitely is the most modern structure, aesthetically and functionally, however only as of late connected to Croatia entering the Schengen zone. Seems they care a lot more now. Before the April of this year, it was just the prettiest to look at.
Likewise, in comparison to SOF, ZAG is missing the rail link connection to the main rail station in downtown as well. Same as BEG.

      Delete
    9. Nemjee22:18

I see I hit a nerve which I fear has little to do with aviation.
Could you please re-read what I already wrote where I specifically said that BEG is just an ok airport. Many people, including yourself, are unreasonably critical of BEG.
I do not see where you got the idea I consider BEG to be on the level of SIN.

BEG doesn't have a retro look, it has a simple and functional look. Similar to ATH or even VIE.
You are basing your entire argument that BEG is inferior to I guess pretty much anyone and everyone simply because it lacks a rail link and a hotel. Mind you, both are planned and both will be eventually constructed. Meanwhile BEG has a decent public transport connection that takes you to both downtown and the railway station (two of them).

I took the metro from SOF to downtown and it took us roughly 25 minutes to reach it. About the same time it took us to get to the airport by taxi on the way back.

Have you ever used bus gates in Sofia? I have now for the first time and let me tell you that the experience is anything but pleasant. There are four bus gates and with us there were three other flight: Bulgaria Air to Enfidha and Ryanair to both Naples and Chania. There were over 400 people waiting to board and there were barely enough seats for 50 people. It was overcrowded and hot. On the other hand, in BEG we boarded from C10E and there were enough seats for everyone. I guess it has to do with BEG not using bus gates to board high density A321s and B738s like they do in Sofia. Wizz Air is usually connected to an air-bridge.

So yes, once you add up everything I do believe BEG is prettier and more user friendly than SOF. Sofia obviously has some advantages but BEG has more of them.
Once the construction is completed BEG will have a larger airside with more to offer to its passengers. There are going to be more coffee shops, restaurants and shops.

Meanwhile, once you pass the passport control in Sofia, you have two relatively small duty free shops and two coffee shops plus a moving cart with drinks and snacks. That's it.

BEG even has a pharmacy which I think might be as useful as having a hotel at the airport. I suppose more passengers could profit from having a pharmacy there than a hotel next to the terminal.

There is no attitude of superiority, just an objective and rational evaluation of pros and cons. Simple as that. I noticed that there are certain people of here who are continuously trying to put Serbia down by making it seem inferior to pretty anything and everything abroad.

      Delete
    10. Anonymous03:16

Well phrases like "BEG is miles ahead with current facilities. It will get even better once everything is finished and once all shops open." make it sound like it is SIN. SOF has been given to some "Munich Airport" guys and a utterly useless Spaniard called Jesus Caballero who does nothing but talk. SOF was privatised almost the same period as BEG but Vinci went along better.
SOF is not the prettiest airport but quite functional (not T1). You probably took the metro and cost you 0,80€ to reach the city or anywhere else. SOF has 2 airport hotels for many years and BEG has zero. BEG has more air bridges and now a newer runway which is awesome but SOF also receives many widebodies and has more charters. Both airports are just quite similar when it comes to pros and cons. They both have the same traffic as well. And yes, BEG has more developments going on, no doubt about it. BEG is targetting a more hub based model, while SOF is much more O&D traffic and charters. It is not being "against Serbia" but we need to be constructive in our visions. Also, BEG-SOF is one of the oldest routes in the Balkans. Imo, ZAG airport is way much modern than SOF and BEG and yes they do not have a metro or railway link but the terminal is amazing and opened a couple of years ago. Same with Split. Hope you understand what I mean.

Like I said, the metro and the hotel are the only two clear advantages SOF might have over Belgrade and both of those things will be fixed in the coming years, especially as we get closer to the Expo.

Out of curiosity, what widebodies does SOF receive and I am not talking about cargo traffic.
Since you claim SOF has more charters, could you please share the numbers with me?

As for growth, don't forget that in July Sofia underperformed by not surpassing their 2019 numbers.

      2019: 663.738
      2023: 662.440

This also happened in May while in June they barely surpassed their 2019 numbers.

For those who have never been to Sofia here is a picture of T2:

I might be wrong but I don't think there is a proper coffee shop where you can sit down in the check-in area. From what I remember there was a shop but it looked more like takeaway.

BEG might not be SIN but when it comes to the overall passenger experience it beats SOF hands down. More shops, more coffeeshops, there is a proper bakery, pharmacy, clothing stores etc. There's even going to be a grill restaurant at the airport once Walter opens.

I have not seen a single clothing or souvenir store at SOF.

SOF is ugly but it is not (like BEG) so often on the most disrupted airports list. And that's the most important part of the passenger's experience, not the clothing store.

Well disruption will pas, toilets will be solved (if not already), what then will be rwason to spit on BEG/JU, I wander?

They will add new routes, announcement will probably be on October 26th, because that is their 10th anniversary.

What will likely be added is Porto, Manchester, Amman, Shaghai, Guangzhou and Miami.

2 China and 1 US destination only with one more widebody plane?

4th widebody is not planned for this year.

    6. Anonymous15:39

They currently have 7 long-haul flights per week scheduled for the winter. With the introduction of PVG and CAN, that can still be managed with two aircrafts. Third one will be needed in the summer.

If they announce Miami, it won't start before May, as same as with Chicago. Chinese routes should start in the winter, ideally before Chinese New Year.

You forgot that maintenance is done over the winter months. 2 widebodies is not enough. It's either a third will arrive by the end of the year or they will wet lease capacity while one of the A330's is on maintenance.

      Anon 15:55

11 flights per week can easily be done with 2 A330s.

      Anon 17:24

YU-ARC had maintenance last winter so it won't have this one. YU-ARB will probably need maintenance sometime this winter.

C check on A330 is done every 2 years. Bravo had one last November, while Charlie had one this April. With that in mind, no A330 will leave for maintenance this winter.

With a rise like this, I would expect new airlines to look at BEG. I mean, they do (AirBaltic, British...), but do you think there's room for brand new base at BEG?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nemjee17:50

Only one that could potentially open a base in BEG is FR down the road. They would only do if one of the two things happen:

      1. if BEG gives them major discounts which I don't see happening.
      2. if they see JU and W6 do so well that they decide to get a piece of that cake for themselves.

I could see number 2 happening down the road especially if local demand keeps on growing. If Wizz adds a 5th A321 then it might annoy FR just like they were annoyed by W6's success in Tirana.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous08:24

I think that 30+ JU planes with so many new destinations + already 4th based W6 plane in BEG are already very good reasons for FR to re-think about their decision not to fly from Belgrade.

If they need more planes and destinations to be convinced about BEG's potential I don't know, but I am sure that the longer they wait it would be more difficult for them to catch up with competition in BEG.

It is more than obvious they have terribly failed with their decision not to fly from Belgrade if they don't get the prices they want.

      Delete
    3. Nemjee09:02

One major problem for FR is that W6 has quite a lot of destinations out of BEG where they have a lot of frequencies: EIN, CIA, DTM, BCN, FMM... are all daily and many more are at least 5 weekly. FR won't be able to compete with 2 or 3 weekly flights.

Eurowings may be interested, they have Graz and Pristina. My personal favorite would be easyJet but that's not going to happen. They could launch some new routes at least.

Belgrade is the only big airport in SE Europe without a Ryanair base.
Finally the arrival of Ryanair will be the icing on the Belgrade airport cake.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Anonymous15:12

Belgrad won't decrease prices to Ryanair and FR won't come if Belgrade doesn't do it.

So, in this game Ryanair is a big loser - they get nothing from Belgrade's big market and at the same time Belgrade is not in despair like Zagreb to decrease heavily prices to FR in order to have them on its apron.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous16:01

      BEG don’t need Ryanair, they
have Wizz Air and EasyJet, adding Ryanair will make disastrous

      Delete
    3. Nemjee17:56

When looking at BEG's catchment area, FR is at a loss. They failed in TSR, they failed in TZL, they are not exactly thriving in BNX, in OSI they are present only seasonally, in INI they are stagnating with a decreasing number of destinations etc.

It's obvious that BEG managed to successfully strangle their competition. This will further concentrate the market around them.

Ryanair is no doubt monitoring BEG's growth and they are not happy about it. If BEG does well then they won't have a good enough reason to sit and negotiate with them.

I think BEG should encourage JU and W6 to grow even more instead of trying to get someone like FR to open a base there.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous08:10

      Fully agreew with you Nemjee.

But talking about BEG to encourage anyone...I think they should first get organised on the way that they can follow current JU+W6 growth. They are currently not in the situation to encourage anyone to grow as they by themselves can't follow that growth.

Belgrade Airport employees working on behalf of Air Serbia seem to be selected for their lack of customer skills. Bus gates procedure for boarding ATRs means passengers are waiting for at least 30 minutes in the bus. Savage.

Belgrade Airport has more on-airport car rental agencies than Orlando, the airport with most car rentals in the world. Some rentals source cars during some periods from private owners, splitting revenue with companies. Those cars are old, beaten and damaged. Companies frequently try to trick customers into paying extra for existing damages.

For more than a year car rentals have been temporarily located in ugly shipping containers next to the new Tower. New Airport building will be located at that spot, so the question for Airport is: why don't you get rid of small, lousy rental companies and consolidate rest of them at Tesla parking?

Because they pay. The toilets don't pay so that's not of their interest, but car rentals, shops, paying businesses - never enough.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous16:52

Not true at all. Orlando MCO allowed only 10 car rental companies on-airport. There are at least a dozen more companies outside the airport willing to pay $$$ to get on the airport propery but airport operator does not allow crappy companies.

BEG should do the same - keep main brands on site, kick others outside to Surcin etc.

Many of the comments above are ludicrous if not ridiculous. Belgrade Airport is under construction and as such should not be judged or compared to any airports in the region until the construction is completed.
Ryannair will never come to Belgrade because Vinci will never charge them only 10 euros per passenger. Nis is going to see many more Ryannair flights once construction of that airport is completed.
And enough about no rail connection. It's coming very soon.
Also, airport hotels are not a necessity but I'm sure one or two will be built prior to the world fair - and that's 4 years away.
