Commercial airports in the former Yugoslavia processed a combined total of over 22.24 million passengers during the January – August period, with Belgrade positioning itself within the top 75 busiest in Europe. A total of eleven airports registered their best passenger performance on record during the eight-month period. They include Belgrade, Zagreb, Pristina, Skopje, Podgorica, Zadar, Tuzla, Banja Luka, Niš, Osijek and Kraljevo. On the other hand, two saw their figures lag on last year, which was still impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. They include Sarajevo and Rijeka. Furthermore, a handful of airports are still behind their pre-pandemic figures, among which are Dubrovnik, Ljubljana, Tivat, Pula, Ohrid, Mostar, Brač and Mali Lošinj.

During the January - August period, Belgrade Airport ranked 73rd busiest on the continent, just behind Keflavik (Reykjavik), Seville and Malta, but ahead of Sofia, Glasgow and Thessaloniki. Zagreb positioned itself as the 112th busiest. It was behind the likes of Wroclaw, Trabzon and Split, but ahead of Paphos, Verona and Tbilisi. Pristina was 118th on the list, behind Olbia and Santiago de Compostela but ahead of London City, Cluj, and Treviso. Skopje ranked 127th, trailing Santorini, Tallin and Cork but immediately ahead of Memmingen, Chisinau and Rotterdam.

During the first eight months of year, the Slovenian market saw the second largest percentile decline in passenger figures in Europe (excluding Ukraine), behind only sanctioned-hit Belarus, when compared to the pre-pandemic era with numbers down 34.9%. On the other hand, Albania recorded the fastest percentile growth, amounting to 107.7%, according to Airports Council International Europe, and was ahead of Armenia with a 65.3% increase. The market in Kosovo grew 42.1%, the Bosnia and Herzegovina market registered 33.2% growth, Serbian 24.7%, Macedonian 15.1%, Croatian 9%, while the Montenegrin market saw its figures decline 7.3% on the same period in 2019. Notably, many markets in Europe are yet to recover their pre-pandemic figures with the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Russia and Switzerland all below pre-Covid levels. Overall, London Heathrow Airport was the busiest in Europe between January and August, handling 52.3 million passengers, ahead of Istanbul’s main gateway, which was second with 50.6 million travellers. They were followed by Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam, Madrid, Frankfurt, Barcelona, London Gatwick, Rome Fiumicino and Istanbul Sabiha Gocken.

DeleteCheck NUE's website, if these two airlines leave there won't be much to replace them. Their list of airlines operating out of the airport is everything but long.
On top of that, Ryanair is terminating NUE-BNX/KRK/VCE. Obviously this is not a thriving market for carriers. It's proximity to MUC and FRA seems to be their biggest problem.
If OS is taken out of the equation then those heading east will either chose JU, TK or LH from FRA.

Cannot agree, TIA is totally different case. The structure of passengers is emmigration oriented, with dozens of routes toward Italy and other hubs where Albanians live and work. It can go just up with the increase of tourists. It’s a very sustainable and realistic growth, it’s not that people are traveling for city tours due to cheap tickets.

Wizz Air operates to 20+ routes to Italy from Tirana, Ryanair can not overtake them on the Italian market. TIA is one of the top 5 bases of W6 nowadays and that can not be changed by 17 routes of Ryanair coming to TIA. They may end the flights to Poland which were launched due to the polish tourists coming for holidays in Albania and maybe some other routes, but 45 of them will remain and will further develop.

Some 15 new destinations by JU and further increase in number of rotations on many of existing routes. For Wizz, they must be targeting increase of passengers of 35-40% for sure… they count on travelers coming from Tuzla and other neighbouring airports they are abandoning right now.

So this winter they will have 4 Embraers compared to 1 or 2 this summer. They also plan on adding more ATRs so having 40 planes is not that crazy.

Delete7 ATR's so far. YU-ASD went into service a couple days ago with the first flight to SKP. DAT ATR is scheduled so far until 30.11. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 8th ATR arrive by the end of the year.
DeleteAs for the waves, I believe more will be done to spread out flights outside of the typical waves as they look at launching more routes outside of the ~3 hour zone from BEG. Either extending existing waves or adding more flights to the 2 smaller "waves". More flights are being timed around 8 am, 10-11am, 2 pm and 8pm.
Marsa Alam will be served by JU. Representatives from travel agencies went last week to prepare for next year's season.
I noticed that Marsa Alam is very popular with Hungarians and Czechs. Let's see is Marsa Matruh comes back next summer. I guess traditional places like Sharm and Hurgada have become too expensive for mass tourism from Serbia, especially now when Russians came back.

Then BEG will have more passengers than all airports in Bulgaria (I'm only talking about year-round flights, not counting tourists). SKG is long outmatched and we can't even talk about equal numbers. TIA has no chance, after the opening of Vlora airport it will go quiet.

Equally so, there is a reason why OSI, TZL, TSR... are struggling as BEG keep on growing. So not only have Serbs stopped going to foreign airports to catch flights but people from other regions and countries are heading to BEG to fly. Wizz Air shutting TZL down and redirecting everything to BEG is a good sign of that.

DeleteNot really, the growth was unexpected and they are investing in a lot of directions to address what they see is lacking.
DeleteFor example they have enlarged taxi places several times in the last couple of years.
Also have put e-gates since last year to lower the waiting time at document checks.
Before the summer 2023 they also put some new tech at the security area, so people dont need to open luggages, bags or laptops.
Looking at that list BEG is ahead of Sofia and Thessaloniki so now we have to work on reaching BUD numbers.

Can i suggest to the this website owner to add a counter/id on each anon commenter, so that people can now who is talking with who...Like, anon1, anon2, anon3. Or not allowing to be anon - most of the users here are actually anon..
