Qatar Airways has said it has identified ten new destinations it plans to launch next year, giving hope to several airports in the former Yugoslavia which have been courting the Gulf carrier for a number of years. The Qatari airline introduced seven new routes in 2023 and restored eleven destinations, which were maintained prior to the pandemic. Qatar Airways recently settled its dispute with Airbus, which has seen the airline return to service over twenty grounded A350 jets, revive its cancelled A321neo order, as well as take delivery of Boeing 737 MAX jets. “We feel that the Balkans are underserved, and we would like to provide countries in the Balkans with a five-star product they deserve. That is why we are focusing on such markets with high opportunities, which benefits both sides, the people in these countries and Qatar Airways as well. We will continue to seek opportunities in this region”, the airline noted.
Qatar Airways discontinued flights between Doha and Skopje at the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020 and is yet to return. The airline told EX-YU Aviation News it would resume operations to the Macedonian capital "once it is commercially viable". Both the Macedonian government and airport operator TAV have been making attempts for Qatar Airways to return. The Macedonian Minister for Transport and Communications, Blagoj Bočvarski, has held talks with the Qatari Ambassador to the country, where he emphasised the need for Qatar Airways to restore services between Doha and Skopje. “It is especially important for us to renew the flights between Skopje and Doha, in order to maintain business relations between the two countries”, Mr Bočvarski said. Airport operator TAV Macedonia noted, "Almost all destinations maintained from Macedonia’s two airports prior to the Covid-19 crisis are now back, except for Doha and Dubai from Skopje Airport. TAV Macedonia is working to retrieve these two destinations, as they offered solid transfer connections for the Macedonian diaspora in Australia and New Zealand, as well as connections for travellers going to Japan, China, India and exotic destinations in the East”. Qatar Airways handled 29.856 travellers on its Skopje route in 2019. The majority of the passengers were transfers. They primarily originated or were destined for the Australian market - 33%, followed by India 7%, Thailand 5% and Singapore 4%.
Qatar Airways was to introduce seasonal summer flights between Doha and Dubrovnik on April 20, 2020. The service, which was to be maintained between three and five times per week until late October with the A320 jet, was cancelled following the Covid-19 outbreak. As the Australian and southeast Asian market have seen strong growth since travel restrictions were liftes, which were the main source markets for the Dubrovnik service, Qatar Airways could reconsider plans to include the coastal city in its network. Qatar Airways entered the Croatian market in 2012 and was one of the busiest airlines in Zagreb prior to the pandemic, handling over 130.000 passengers in the city in 2019.
Qatar Airways has expressed interest in serving Ljubljana in the past. Prior to the pandemic, the airline's former CEO of 27 years, Akbar Al Baker, said, "Ljubljana is being looked at. We have many destinations we plan to operate with our narrowbodies”. Earlier this year, the airline began codesharing on Air Serbia's flights between Belgrade and the Slovenian capital. Last year, a large Qatari delegation, headed by Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, visited Slovenia, during which potential flights were discussed. "As for the air connectivity between Ljubljana and Doha, Qatar Airways is very interested in the European market, but opening a new route requires time to study the market. Once this is completed, flights will be launched. Slovenia is a tourism-oriented country that relies on this sector as a main resource in the economy and has attractive facilities. Tourism between the two countries could see a leap in the coming period", the Qatari delegation said.
Qatar Airways will take part in the upcoming Dubai Air Show next week. EX-YU Aviation News will be present at the event and plans to bring you more on what Gulf carriers have in store for the region.
Next balkan destination will be Tirana. Also eventually resumption of Skopje.
ReplyDeleteSkopje is not a sure resumption as long as Thessaloniki exists.
DeleteLMAO
DeleteLjubljana and Skopje surely have to get flights now.
ReplyDeleteI only hope that they'll use 737s instead of old A320
737s are being exclusively used on short Gulf routes because they feature an inferior product (from S7 Airlines).
DeleteDoes this apply to their max routes as well?
DeleteTheir current 737 MAX hard product is not any different than the older A320s, tbh.
DeleteRather see emirates instead of flydubai in Ljubljana and no qatar
DeleteLJU pls
ReplyDeleteBring QR back to SKP
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I don't think they will come back. But I hope I'm wrong.
DeleteThis article proves that they will come back.
DeleteIt will be Ljubljana ;)
ReplyDeleteI really hope so
Deletethey see how flydubai and tk are doing in Ljubljana.
DeleteYes, FlyDubai is stagnating and Turkish can not bring back doubly daily winter flights
DeleteDefinitely think LJU has very high potential for more Gulf flights. Look what is happening with IST and especially DXB. TLV should also be in the radar because Slowenien is exactly this type of country looked for by Arabs, Middle East, Israelis etc to visit.
DeleteWhen do they plan to announce the news, if any for 2024? Do they have a set date? I will be satisfied with either SKP or SKG which is fine for Macedonia since many travelers are also using SKG.
ReplyDeletelol you must be joking
DeleteI will not be satisfied: I would certainly not travel to SKG to catch a flight with QR. I'd rather use TK from SK in this case.
DeleteIf you live in the southeast of the country, SKG is actually closer
Deleteand if you don't which is the case for more than 2/3 of the population, then SKG is not closer
DeleteExactly its the least populated area in the country
Delete@9.04 most likely at the ITB Berlin in March.
DeleteIn 2016 it was also during the ITB when Qatar announced their SKP flights
Deletethat means that the summer season will be skipped in that case
DeleteNot really. At this year's ITB they announced a lot of new routes. Most were launched in June, July, August and September.
DeleteYeah i agree with everything the other guy said. For sue i will not travel from Skopje to Solun for 5h in order to catch a flight with Qatar. Nonsense
DeleteThis is a myth. Even if you live in Strumica (which is about as southeast as you can get), SKP is still closer than SKG. Do a simple Googlemaps directions comparison if you don't believe me. That's not even adding the border crossing variable. SKG makes sense for Macedonians when schedule is important (connection times, etc.) or if it provides considerable $ savings.
DeleteA lot of people go to SKG to catch a Ryanair flight..
DeleteBesides EX-YU I Think SKG is 90% for sure their next Balkan destination.
ReplyDeleteDid they fly to SKG before Covid?
DeleteYes , back in 2018 with 4 weekly .
DeleteThey flew to SKG till 2020
Deleteomg dont get me excited
ReplyDeleteIf Ljubljana is one of the destinations, it will be big news. Another option to travel to Asia, this will further increase competition and drive flydubai and Turkish Airlines to increase frequency.
ReplyDeleteProbably they are one of the airlines Staples was talking about.
DeleteIt’s either gonna be SKP or SKG
ReplyDeleteI think there is more of a chance being SKG. SKP didn't perform so great for them if you look at the passenger numbers and how long they kept the same frequencies.
DeleteNo Dubai from SKP now would mean a lot more demand for Doha than precovid.
DeleteThe demand now when compared to precovid is higher itself. Its normal and i think that they will return to SKP. However, this will affect Turkish Airlines as all of the traffic from Australia and Asia are using them right now.
DeleteI think they will start more than one destination
ReplyDeleteDBV seems most likely.
ReplyDeleteI think so too. They planned 5 weekly flights to DBV in 2020!
DeleteDeparture time DOH: 07.00
Arrival time DBV: 11.35
Departure time DBV: 12.40
Arrival time DOH: 18.45
Day operating: 1-345-7
Interestingly Dubrovnik was planned to have more frequencies than SJJ and SKP.
DeleteAs far as I heard from some people from QR, SKP was one of (if not the) the poorest performing routes as well as SJJ (apart from Summer period) for Qatar in Europe. Both poor in loads and in yields - very poor combination.
DeleteQR would be a fantastic addition in any of these airports.
ReplyDelete+1
DeleteDOH-LJU-SKP-DOH
ReplyDeleteOr DOH-SKP-TIA
DeleteDOH-SKP-SJJ
DeleteIf they want to better compete against Emirates/Flydubai they need to start more ex-Yu routes.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how Sarajevo has been downgraded to a seasonal route since Covid.
ReplyDeleteLJU makes the most sense outta the whole list of destinations.
ReplyDeleteif they don't do it now they will never fly to Ljubljana
DeleteWhy would they never fly out of LJU if not now? Is the apocalypse upon us in 2025 so flights need to start in 2024?
DeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteThey could start DOH-SKP-LJU. I'm sure they would get fifth freedom rights for SKP-LJU too.
ReplyDeleteAnd who will fly between Skopje and Ljubljana when Wizz air is already operating the route?
DeleteThat is SKP in the pic. Trying to not get too excited about this :D
ReplyDeleteAww yes... I took this flight once back in 2019
DeleteIs there a chance Split could get Qatar Flights?
ReplyDeleteQatar Airways should start LJU, most logical destination.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it more logical if they already flew to Skopje before?
DeleteBecause Slovenia is an undeserved market with a lot of demand for travel.
Delete30k+ passengers a year from Australia to Macedonia currently don't have a one stop route. Whoever goes first, DOH or DBX, will take almost all of them.
DeleteI think that QR is full on Australia anyway so until they get approval for additional flights (god knows when and if), I really don't see any priority for them to look at SKP - not much point starting a destination so heavily dependant on Australia while no seats on Australia....
DeleteVery negative comments as always. It comes after the jelaousy of the people. Some wants Ljubjana and the others Skopje. We all hope that both will get direct route, even though SKP is in much much better position then Ljubljana. Anyway anything new from any airline to any city is a win.
Delete^Lol
DeleteFingers crossed
ReplyDeleteQatar was the only oneworld airline operating to Skopje. Hope we see them back sooner rather than later.
ReplyDeleteI think that QR is between SKP and SKG for a return and its gonna be only one.
ReplyDeleteThink so to. Interesting that neither has been restored so far.
DeleteI think it’s gonna be SKG Greeks attract airlines like crazy.
DeleteThey will return to Skopje!!
ReplyDelete🤞🏻🤞🏻
DeleteThey still have a shortage of narrow bodies.
ReplyDeleteLet's see which direction Qatar Airways takes without the 'Chief'
ReplyDeleteI really hope LJU will finally happen.
ReplyDeleteBelieve!
DeleteImagine if they launch INI-DOH lol
ReplyDeletevia KVO
DeleteIt will again be one big nothing from QR for this region. Mark my words.
ReplyDeleteMy feelings exactly.
DeleteMost likely - I would not be extremely surprised with seasonal DBV (but still do not expect it), but other than that I would more expect further growth in frequencies for ZAG and BEG than starting new destinations. Nothing else in ex YU should be expected in my opinion until well in the future.
DeleteI think if they launch LJU it will happen the same as it did with FlyDubai. And as they have been considering Lju quite seriously for some time now, they probably know that as well.
DeleteLjubljana and Tirana will be the first ones and I think that Skoje could follow shortly after.
ReplyDeleteThe likelihood of them adding more than one destination from the region next year is close to zero. If they do add something, it will be just one destination.
ReplyDeleteWhy
DeleteBecause they are launching just 10 routes and the majority are likely to be in Asia and Africa.
DeleteSKP seems a no brainer to me given they ran it before covid and had to compete with Dubai for mostly the same transfer passengers while now they won't have to compete (unless Dubai also returns soon).
ReplyDeleteYes but SKP was not performing well for them pre Covid.
Delete30k passengers is literally decent?
DeleteThey are talking about new destinations which both DBV and SKP arent, but they can be a "resume" destinations
ReplyDeleteTechnically DBV was never launched so it would be a new destination.
DeleteThis is actuall quite exciting to see which destination they will choose. They have previusly flown to SKP and planned DBV but they also expressed LJU interest several times and held talks with the gov and as well saw the FlyDubai success. Also there are Tirana and Thessaloniki who could also be strong contender for flights. But I think they will
ReplyDeletenot add more than 2 destinations in the region.
+1
DeleteMy dear, the saga continues ..
ReplyDeleteQatar Airways still can not think outside the box which means outside of Zagreb .
Did it ever occur to you it may not make sense for QR to look beyond ZAG here in the area? There are also things called opportunity costs...I don't think people working in network planning for QR do not have tools and some knowledge.....
DeleteYou say that as if they don't fly anywhere in the region other than Zagreb yet they have flights to Belgrade, Budapest, Bucharest, Sofia and seasonal to Sarajevo.
DeleteI meant new destinations....
DeleteNis please.
