Low cost carrier Ryanair has unveiled plans to launch operations to Sarajevo in late March of next year with two weekly services from Charleroi, Gothenburg, Bergamo and Memmingen, as well as three weekly rotations from London Stansted. It comes after the budget carrier was one of three selected, alongside Wizz Air and SunExpress, to maintain subsidised flights from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, which has been lacking connectivity to major European airports. It should be noted that Ryanair is not opening a base in Sarajevo, rather, all flights will be operated from the airline's other bases. Additional new routes are expected to be added in the coming period.
Destination | Launch date |
---|---|
Charleroi | 31.03.2024 |
Gothenburg | 31.03.2024 |
Bergamo | 31.03.2024 |
Memmingen | 01.04.2024 |
London Stansted | 02.04.2024 |
Ryanair does not face direct competition on any of its new routes at this point, but will indirectly go against Wizz Air on the London service, with its rival maintaining operations between London Luton and Sarajevo. Leisure carrier TUI operates a seasonal winter service from London Gatwick. Wizz, which last year closed its base in Sarajevo, previously served Charleroi, Gothenburg and Memmingen from Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital. As a result of Ryanair's new routes, Sarajevo will once again be linked with Italy and Belgium through nonstop flights, with both markets previously served by Wizz Air last year.
Ryanair entered Bosnia and Herzegovina’s market in 2018 with services to Banja Luka. Last November it expanded its operations in the country by launching flights to Tuzla, which were short-lived and discontinued after several months as Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Directorate of Civil Aviation enforced the payment of a 1.5-euro tax per departing passenger, which has since been temporarily suspended, in order to stimulate airlines to launch new routes. This year, Ryanair will be Bosnia and Herzegovina’s second largest airline by both the number of operated flights and available seat capacity. In 2023, the no frills airline will have operated 2.048 flight operations on the market with 384.130 seats. It is behind Wizz Air, which has over 850.000 seats on the market.
Hmm
ReplyDeleteWhat?
DeleteFinally. Excellent news for Sarajevo
ReplyDeleteGood news indeed. Happy for Sarajevo.
Deletevery good news. Both cities are hubs for IE.
DeleteYes!
ReplyDeleteMostly routes served previously by Wizz. Hope they have more sucsess.
ReplyDeleteNot bad for a start. They will probably add more in the future.
ReplyDeleteWe are not lucky to have three lines to London (TUI, Wizzair, Ryanair) with too expensive entry visas.
ReplyDeleteCrazy to think that just two months ago there were no flights to London and now there will be 3 airlines to 3 London airports!
DeleteTUI only flies to Gatwick only during the winter timetable this year so will not overlap with Ryanair (which starts in Apr-24)
DeleteThere will not be 3 airlines to 3 airports. TUI barely has any flights at all and they are winter-only. Ryanair has summer flights on sale for now only.
DeleteGreat news although I think the London route will get saturated. But let's see
ReplyDeleteI doubt it will last more then a season.
DeleteDepends on the subsidy terms. I think they have to operate the routes for 3 years.
DeleteRyanair will drop prices to £9.99 and the aircraft will be full. There is no such thing as market saturation for Ryanair's flights ex London.
DeleteRyanair will fly in winter as well. They just loaded summer flights for all routes. It will be extended.
DeleteI'm saying they will just load all flights until the end of summer. You will see. That doesn't mean they are seasonal.
DeleteTickets are now on sale
DeleteOk scratch that, they have loaded the routes on their website but still haven't put the tickets on sale :D
DeleteRyanair really spreading its wings in the region now
ReplyDeleteWith 10-12 extra flights per week? 😂
DeleteWith 10-12 extra flights per week?
Delete------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wait to see Dubrovnik-Ryanair announcement tomorrow!
Waiting to see how Wizz Air will respond
ReplyDeleteDon't get your hopes up. They will launch just one new route and we will have to pay for the other two they already operate.
DeleteAfter Ryanair announced these routes, Wizz explained that they will cover London, Rome, and Abu Dhabi, while SunExpress will operate flights to Izmir and Antalya. Because they also receive subsidies.
DeleteIll personally carry on flying with OU, LH or OS to London. Ryanair are no cheaper once all their rip off extras are added on.
ReplyDeleteNew routes will negatively affect OU transfer passengers from Sarajevo. Direct lowcost services to the West are what SJJ needed.
DeleteOU will not be affected. Its LHR flights do not connect onto its SJJ flights except on Wednesdays. Brussels also does not connect well, and Munich only connects well in the winter.
DeleteThe Wizz base didn't affect anybody. Neither will these flights.
DeleteFinally destinations in Europe
ReplyDeleteI am very happy but I just hope this sticks. LCCs have had a very strange ride in BiH
ReplyDeleteWOW, huge news for Sarajevo!!!
ReplyDeleteSo Ryanair now flying to 3 ex-Yu capitals right?
ReplyDeleteYes. Podgorica, Sarajevo and Zagreb.
DeleteNice
DeleteWhen will tickets go on sale?
ReplyDeleteIn a few hours
DeleteA Ryanair corporate jet just landed in SJJ from DUB so they will probably make the official announcement shortly
DeleteThanks everyone
DeleteTuzla getting new routes, Sarajevo getting new routes, Ljubljana is next (hopefully) the tender has ended yesterday
ReplyDeleteU expect FR?
DeleteSo now it's cheaper to fly from London than Belgrade to Sarajevo. I wish there was competition on the Belgrade to Sarajevo route as the prices are high for the length of the journey.
ReplyDeleteThe bus...
DeleteAny of these would be viable from ljubljana as well...what a shame
ReplyDeleteYes, of course, because there are tens of thousands of Slovenians living around Memmingen.
DeleteLJU needs Barcelona, Berlin, Stockholm, Lisbon, Malaga, Gran Canaria / Tenerife, Madrid, Prague, Dublin, Manchester, Oslo.
DeleteGasto routes...
ReplyDeleteWhat do you want?
DeleteFor now. There will be more routes
DeleteAre gastos not people? They don't need to fly like everyone lese? :)
DeleteWhich one is gasto here except Goeteborg, will mostly be used by Bosnian businesspeople and leisure travelers
Deletehahaha
DeleteBro thinks it's 2005. and people can't afford 50-100€ for a return flight
DeleteAll of them are gastro routes. But it doesnt metter, the good thing is that SJJ has some touch with Europe now. Haters are gonna hate, gastro or not there are flights now. Its not like everyone that fly from LJU, ZAG or BEG are going to vacation or coming back.
Deleteits the same destinations as Banja Luka. guess why
DeleteRadnicki letovi.
DeleteI work for a UK company in Bosnia and Herzegovina where we have someone from the UK visiting each week. Since the company, based in Sarajevo, has more than 2000 people, many of those using London flights are not diaspora.
Deletegreat one seat is booked
DeleteAnd what if one seat is booked? Its important that SJJ will have more routes to Europe now. Whats the problem now? Jelaous again? Of what? If SJJ and SKP close and dont exsist will you be happy then? First you were hating that SJJ has no routes and now you are haiting that its because of the diaspora. Where is the end if there is one?
DeleteHow much will Sarajevo pay for these flights including SunExpress and Wizzair?
ReplyDelete250 000€ I think.
Deletewhen to Serbia?
ReplyDeleteThey already fly to Serbia
DeleteI refer to Belgrade
DeleteBEG is expensive for them and BEG does not want to lower its fees for Ryanair, and considering it's connected to 120 cities, there is little point for them to do that. Zagreb lowered its fees for Ryanair when it was struggling to regain traffic. Considering its relatively low growth level this year, it seems like it was the right to do otherwise they would still be below pre Covid levels.
DeleteIn Sarajevo they got money because the airport barely has any flights to Europe.
https://www.exyuaviation.com/2023/09/ryanair-with-no-plans-to-serve-belgrade.html
Bravo Bosnia!
ReplyDeleteLet's see how long those will last! Just wondering!
ReplyDeleteUntil the subsidies keep running
DeleteHow many passengers could we see in Sarajevo next year?
ReplyDeleteI think it will reach over 2 million with new Ryanair and Wizz Air routes.
DeleteCongratulations Sarajevo
ReplyDeleteThis was the only way. Weather we like subsidies or not, it was the only way we could see European destinations added. I am happy authorities finally came to their senses. Could have been done long ago through a national carrier with a professional management but our politicians prefer paying foreigners, while putting family members in local companies and running them to the ground. So in the end, if it had to be like this, I'm glad at least they got a well known company to launch routes.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope they don't duplicate Lumiwigs flights. We are waiting for Copenhagen, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Baden Bannen. If anyone has the strength, let him try Paris. I'm so glad we have Gothenburg again! Well done to Ryanair
ReplyDeleteI don't want to see the same destinations from both airlines (in TZL and SJJ)^
DeleteIt's likely going to duplicate on GOT. The rest I doubt it.
Deleteyou really think Lumiwings will go ahead?
DeleteLumiwings is probably the most viable out of all 'projects' in the region. Let me remind you CY interest in OU, Slovenia - China direct flights , Uganda airlines BEG flights and many more..
DeleteCan't wait to see the fares. I'm certain at least for the first 24hrs they will be dirt cheap for something like 10 euros.
ReplyDeleteWell they put them on sale and I can tell you they are not dirt cheap at all. Return flights to Charleroi in April costs 160 euros without anything (seats, luggage etc)
DeleteHopefully base incoming soon, thats really how you grow but this will surely do
ReplyDeleteThis is HUGE news, well done Sarajevo! :)
ReplyDeleteAgree, really great news! Hoping for more routes to be announced, and not just by Ryanair!
Deleteany info on how much they get paid for?
ReplyDeleteIt seems to be a secret.
DeleteIt is not secret. 250 000€
DeleteThe fares that they published are expensive for LCC
ReplyDeleteLol wait a little
Delete^ What do you mean?
DeleteThey'll get cheaper
DeleteWho is paying subsidies? Airport or directly government?
ReplyDeleteTourist organisation ie government
DeleteWatched the news in Sarajevo, someone from the airport said they are expecting to have between 10 and 15 new routes by April of next year, not sure how true it is but thats what he said loo
ReplyDelete5 new routes by Ryanair
Delete1 new route by Wizz (but they count London and Abu Dhabi as new)
2 new routes by Sunexpress
And you
Sorry wrote this "and you" by accident 😂
DeleteAnn 17:55 you are now officially a route out of Sarajevo
DeleteThere are many comments here regarding the search for London. In recent years, London has proved a popular route in SJJ, Brits are discovering the Bosnian ski resorts and Sarai, more and more tourists are arriving. This is why Wizz Air is back. Also FR is starting with three weeks of frequencies which only shows that they believe in this route and the demand is there. So why not? In the coming years I also expect Manchester and Birmingham with TUI if demand continues to grow.
ReplyDeleteSarajevo*
DeleteExactly. Besides that, I work for a UK company in B&H where we have someone from the UK visiting each week.
DeleteThree times a week in the summer season from London to a historic and capital city is hardly "popular"...
DeleteAny chance for Sarajevo-Oslo??
ReplyDelete... and unfortunately, still not connected with Denmark
ReplyDeleteDoesn't Norwegian fly Denmark?
DeleteHonestly I was hoping for more routes, but it's an ok start
ReplyDeleteI was hoping for SJJ-ATH flights too.. Lets hope Aegean returns.
ReplyDeleteKeep hoping
DeleteAegean does fly to SJJ with a stopover in Skopje. Tickets can be booked!
DeleteI’m wondering if they will consider Macedonia in this expansion.
DeleteWith this, Sarajevo soon can be similar in numbers to Skopje.
ReplyDeleteThere are 3 flights from the uk ok one is a winter flight. It would be nice if one of them would be able to fly from a destination up north in the uk..There is a lot of bosnians and Ex Yu nationals who would be willing to use this service.
ReplyDeleteAny chance of Sarajevo-Dublin flights any time soon?
ReplyDelete
