Turkish overtakes Lufthansa as busiest carrier in Slovenia

Turkish Airlines has continued to perform strongly on its flights between Istanbul and Ljubljana, positioning itself as the busiest carrier in Slovenia during the January - October period. According to the European Statistical Office Eurostat, the Turkish flag carrier welcomed 145.539 passengers between the two cities during the ten-month period. Turkish Airlines’ passenger numbers on its Ljubljana flights have increased 52.8% on last year and are up 9.2% on the pre-pandemic 2019. Istanbul was Ljubljana’s busiest individual destination during the January - October period, ahead of London (all airports combined). On its 1.030 flights between the two cities (includes operations in each direction), the carrier utilised the Airbus A321 aircraft on 33% of rotations, with the A320, A330 and Boeing 737-800 jets deployed on the remaining services.

Ljubljana passenger performance for select routes, JAN - OCT 2023

Lufthansa has placed as Ljubljana’s second busiest carrier, having taken top spot in 2022. The German airline, which maintains operations from both Frankfurt and Munich to the Slovenian capital, handled a combined total of 141.365 passengers during the January - October period. Passenger numbers on flights from the two German cities are still notably down on the same period in 2019 when Slovenia’s former national carrier Adria Airways was the sole operator on the two routes. Back then, it handled a combined total of 184.570 passengers over the six-month period. Between January and October of this year, Lufthansa used the CRJ900 jet on 94% of its Ljubljana flights.

Hurghada, which is served on a regular charter basis, saw the largest increase in passenger numbers compared to four years ago, while among scheduled routes, the biggest growth was recorded by LOT Polish Airlines, which improved its result by almost 40%. Among carriers that operated to Ljubljana in 2019, Air Serbia improved its result this year. Although easyJet improved its figures on the London Gatwick route, it no longer maintains operations from London Stansted or Berlin to the Slovenian capital as it did four years ago.

LOT have a very good service and mostly prices and quite short transfer times to New York, Toronto and Chicago. Their Dreamliners were the best choice. Plus transfer via WAW is much hassle-free compared to bigger airports such as FRA or CDG.

    20. My calculation is based on the following data:
      SKP - LJU - SKP = 6 flights PW (Tue + Thu + Sat)
4 weeks in October + 2 flights (Tue 31st Oct) = (4 x 6) + 2 = 26 flights in October. If I remember correctly, WIZZ mostly used the A320, there were also a few flights with the A321, so I used the assumption that 200 seats were available for each flight, i.e.: 26 x 200 = 5200 seats in October and from this it follows 3861/5200 = 0.7425. Anon 11:04, if you have more accurate data, or if you think my calculation is based on wrong assumptions, please correct me. I will be very happy with any of your comments or new information, because for us aviation enthusiasts (who are not directly professionally connected to the aviation industry), accurate data is difficult to access and sometimes we have to operate only with assumptions.

Very good result by JU. Let's see where BEG lands at the end of the year given the fact JU actually boosted LJU during that period. Overall BEG-LJU is a solid performer and hopefully JU boosts it to 21 weekly in summer.

Is it me or is LJU-MUC missing from the table? With Adria long gone, Lufthansa Group is now forced to compete on a more equal footing with the rest. There is no more JP to shuttle people to their hubs at discounted fares.

Thank you! I guess my morning coffee still hasn't kicked in.

      Anon 09.22
Indeed. When it comes to LH Group in LJU the only potential threat is AF-KL. Until they become more aggressive Lufthansa will keep on profiting. I guess LO, JU and TK are what is keeping OS away from LJU. I don't think they are ready to fight them with their relatively high costs and a relatively large plane for such a small market (E95).

I think LJU should work with Wizz Air to add more sunshine destinations in summer. They can always stimulate them to operate something like BEG-HER-LJU-HER-BEG or to introduce such W pattern flights from any other base out there.

LJU will stagnate soon in terms of destinations so now it's up to the management to actually stimulate others to become creative. Ryanair is adding holidays destinations from ZAG and they need to think along similar lines.

Anon 17:06 is correct. Big announcements came after previous summer season as well. Third FRA flight (which actually operated on some days in peak season, but not daily as announced). 2. Anonymous10:59

10:36, you are absolutely right. STN has become as important as LGW. Even legacy carriers fly there. LJU needs at least 2 daily STN flights (typical in most EU capitals) early morning flight departure from STN and late evening departure from LJU.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous11:57

LGW is rather full and congested in the Summer. Stansted is now starting to become attractive to many Airlines. Although nowhere near central London , Stansted has excellent connections by both train and Bus and is way better then Luton.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous12:17

Indeed. Stansted has improved significantly. Gatwick is also a great airport, but with so many leisure flights in summer like you say, it becomes very busy. Still stuns me how they manage such a huge traffic with 1 sole runway in LGW.
Stansted indeed has excellent connections and even used by Emirates, Lufthansa and very soon Royal Jordanian but it is quite highly dominated by Ryanair. Their network there is beyond impressive connecting almost every European village even. This is why Maribor should return to their network and Beograd be included.

Technically speaking, London is the second busiest route in LJU. 65+36+35= 135 thousand passengers in the 3 busiest airports and this is with the significant Wizz decrease to Luton. Having such a variety shows that traffic is probably p2p in LJU while TK is more transfer than p2p. Only shows that there is room for much more London flights It still remains a very important European capital with the largest number of airports in the continent. If placed in one, it even surpasses Istanbul having 2 airports.
