Air Serbia is ending its cooperation with Greek carrier Marathon Airlines, from which it has been wet-leasing Embraer aircraft, following the serious aircraft incident which took place on Sunday, February 18. The agreement will be terminated tomorrow. "No Air Serbia flight will be operated by the said Greek company’s aircraft. Flights that should have been operated by Marathon Airlines will now be operated by other aircraft in the fleet to maintain traffic continuity", Air Serbia said. Marathon Airlines is a carrier based in Greece, operating fully in compliance with European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) standards, and is a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Air Serbia has been cooperating with Marathon Airlines since June 2023 based on the short-term wet-lease business model.
Commenting on the incident which took place, the Serbian carrier noted, "In reference to flight JU324 between Belgrade and Dusseldorf, operating on Sunday evening, February 18, 2024, when the Embraer E195 of partner Greek airline, Marathon Airlines, was damaged, Air Serbia immediately contacted the competent government authorities - the Civil Aviation Directorate (DCV) of the Republic of Serbia and the Center for Investigation of Accidents in Transport (CINS)". It added, "Passenger and crew safety is of the utmost priority for Air Serbia and the Serbian national airline is fully cooperating with the aforementioned authorities. Greek aviation authorities will conduct their own investigation"
The airline apologised to passengers affected by the incident. "Air Serbia would like to apologise again to all passengers of flight JU324 of February 18 2024 for any inconvenience they experienced. Even though the flight was operated by partner airline Marathon Airlines, the fact that the plane safely landed and that no passengers or crew members were injured, as a responsible company, Air Serbia would like to point out that it is fully aware of the passengers’ feelings during the flight and deeply regrets the discomfort they faced. By regulations, all passengers onboard flight JU324 of February 18 2024 are entitled to standard compensation and to any other compensation for costs incurred due to the flight being delayed by one day". It added, "Air Serbia has not and will not make any announcements regarding the details of flight JU324 from February 18 while the investigation is in progress. However, the Serbian national airline would like to emphasise once again that it understands the inconvenience the passengers experienced on that occasion. Accordingly, Air Serbia has decided to take all the measures within its control mentioned above immediately. It will consider taking further steps in the coming period so that the recent event does not affect the trust of its passengers earned by the Serbian airline over several decades".

DeletePersonally I find it insulting they mention inconvenience multiple times. I am glad everyone is safe, but this was extremely serious and could have easily been fatal. Apologising for an inconvenient delay and mentioning they get a standard compensation would piss me off if I was on that flight. DeleteWe are in February. Enough time to reorganize and find some replacements before Jul/Aug peak season. No doubt Embraer, ACMI providers and leasing companies will jump into action to fill the gap.
I presume that a new operator will be jumping in as well. Marathon has zero use for these aircraft and will be glad to pass them on as soon as possible.

Today I heard two people going to Vienna to catch their flight instead of flying with Air Serbia this weekend although they have purchased the tickets. I am sure they aren't the only one, hence this decision. It's good JU shifted the focus from controlling the narative to controlling the damage.

DeleteMany people here say this is an overreaction but the truth is we can't really know. Yes, cutting out whole Ejet family seems crazy but there are also other things to consider. The fact that a trained licensed flight crew decided to take off with TORA at about 60% of what was necessary smells heavily like major organizational issues within Marathon which JU may not have been aware of until this point. The early investigation and statements from the flight crew could have indicated that Marathon is an airline which was run in an unsafe fashion and if that was the case (which I can't say for sure) this was the only logical move.

Aviation incidents are not nice but find there was some misunderstanding with the ATC which did a great job. Pilots are not Serbs, they do not know the airport. Marathon is not Olympic or Aegean with a lot of experience. We will need to wait for the experts to speak.Netflix did a documetary on MH 370, but latest footage clearly shows it was suicidal. Being a pilot is not an easy job. Being an ATC controller as well. Wait and e will see. This incident is very important to the industry. I will never ever forget those leaks and airline cracks.

Heads all round should and will roll. ATC, Marathon and it's entire (lack of) safety first culture, Air Serbia for not doing effective due diligence in advance and the airport itself (having that a/c parked at a gate rather than remote stand - wow).

DeleteSpecific atc error was that they allowed airplane to start take off roll from d5 - if there was any doubt from atc that safety was compromised they should cancel take off clearance and either direct it to d6 as original clearance was issued of return it to gate until it is cleared if captain was drunk, there was fight in cockpit, hijacked plane or just stupid mistake or something else is in question.

They have been attacked by the big boys, but still found ways to survive via transters, ACMI, charters, etc. It is not a great airline, but nor is it bad. They chose a good Embraer fleet, they operated for TAP, they have codeshares with many airlines and also focus on domestic routes. Josh made the video during the pandemic, , but think the airline is getting better. They now have 3 A220s, SOF also is a victim of many emergency cases like sick travellers or Indian criminals. Those things will not be heard on LiveATC. And also 20:30, why mention FB and not talk about your Greek boyfriends or Romanian leftovers. The airline’s top priority right now was to end the contract with this airline which turned out to be unprofesional just one month before the start of the summer season, the start of the exact same season where they planned to increase and stablise operations on the routes. Secondly, they dont want bad reputation and spreading news that they swallowed the accident like nothing happend, thats why they did this which was the only right thing to do. Thirdly, they have many more important routes in their network where the E-jets were perfect, routes like FRA, MXP, ATH, HAM, CGN, DUS and so on. OMO is the last route that should be mentioned in these moments. On the other hand, they already had a new record in the past 10 YEARS, 776 passengers in January, so keep calm 😂

Delete11th march is almost a month from now - until then they will either secure more aircraft or re-do their schedule - which in your case they did. If you don't want to take the flight you can call or email them and they'll change the flight or refund you by EU standards. It's common practice and we both know it - you just want to find negatives in the story. What they are doing is focusing on safety (and yes PR) compared to the profits (i guarantee you that those E jets were bringing a steady income) and they should be applauded for that - even though their first response was horrendous to say the least

DeleteTaking into account this whole mess, it's actually okay that they rebooked you to the earlier flight. Call customer service and ask if they can put you on another flight? I'm sure they will do so. Personally my (future Marathon) flight was changed to A319.

DeleteBig fan of Air Serbia btw. I travel a lot on business and always look firat for Air Serbia options. Also was a bih fan of adding E-jets yo their fleet as I lreffer them over noisier and slower ATRs.

Stupid decision in my opinion, Marathon isn’t guilty for that, the ATC Tower is, fire that ATC guy and the two Marathon pilots, not ending the contract. Anyway, good bye to those beautiful Embraer, you’ll be missed, the livery too ! Hope Bulgaria Air’s one will replace Greek ones.

ReplyDeleteBrzina kojom je AS reagovala i raskinula ugovor govori da ovo nije prvi incident sa posadom Marathon-a. Daljna saradnja postaje suvise rizicna i po reputaciju AS i po reputaciju aerodroma BEG. Ovo je iznudjen ali ocekivan korak.
ReplyDeleteSto se aerodroma BEG tice, video kako gorivo curi iz krila a prikuplja se u kolicima za prtljag je - katastrofa.
Wonder if the whole safety culture (or lack of it) at Marathon is something similar to Helios (Cyprus based airline that went bankrupt in 2005 or so after that crash in ATH killing everyone on board. Marathon may not survive this.

I support JU's decision, this incident is probably considered criminal and do not care where the pilots are from. Marathon is just a wannabe airline wth not much experience. This is not bad, but JU will need to react fast, talk and consult with experts, Jiri ad Vinci are not vocal, which is normal. BUT, ATC were doing their job however like the Tenerife disaster and based on the audio and not knowing the airport, thre could have been a problem. We also and will repeat it 100 times, not know the profile of the pilots yet and this strange decision to dump fuel over populated Belgade neighbourhoods.
ReplyDeleteOne fact for sure is that this is a series of events. Pilot fatigue, not knowing the airport, new runway, maybe very bad luck with this plane. We don't know, could be intentional, God knows.
Still think this incident is very strange and leaves us all with 1 million questions. Will also very early wait and see what Mentour Pilot will say and react, Mario Bakalov is an A380 working for mama Lufti and will be very interesting what he will say as well.
For sure, this accident happened for many reasons and yes if it is pilot error, can be considered a crime. And the cabin crew and the passengers maybe going to DUS and continue work, others to study, others just visiting BEG, etc, etc.
But yes, it is a real miracle everyone survived. Pretty sure, the poor pilots are now under super pressure. What is now challenging is the reputation of the young airline. JU had nice and good ambitions but incidents like this one are never good.
"Poor pilots"? Are you kidding? They are kind of pilots who were never supposed to be pilots at the first place. They made an inexcusable mistake.
