Wizz to cancel eight EX-YU routes as Ryanair launches rescue fares

Wizz Air is continuing to struggle with the grounding of its aircraft as a result of Pratt & Whittney engine issues on new-generation jets, forcing the airline to temporarily cancel dozens of routes during the 2024 summer season, which begins on March 31, and reduce planned frequencies across its network. The microscopic pollution found inside certain engine types requires the airline to take aircraft out of service and dismantle the engine in order for the issue to be resolved. The process usually takes up to forty days per engine, with the budget carrier estimating the procedure will last over the next eighteen months. Although the airline has begun receiving compensation from the engine manufacturer, some 45 aircraft are currently grounded, while new deliveries will be unable to mitigate the impact. As a result, Wizz Air’s Skopje base will operate with five instead of six aircraft this summer, while its Belgrade operation will be maintained by three instead of four jets.

Wizz Air will temporarily cancel its flights from Skopje to Luxembourg, launched late last year, its seasonal service from Belgrade to Zakynthos introduced last summer, flights from Ljubljana to London Luton, from Niš to Vienna and Dortmund, as well as from Dubrovnik to Vienna. London Luton and Krakow. Frequencies on its original plan will be reduced across the board, impacting operations from almost all cities it flies to in the former Yugoslavia. However, the frequency reductions are not as severe when compared to the 2023 summer and primarily reflect a divergence on the planned increase in flights the carrier was to implement this year. The airline will go ahead with the introduction of its new three weekly service between Skopje and Salzburg, which it is launching in response to a state tender it won for the introduction of new routes from Macedonia.

Wizz Air’s largest competitor has already responded with Ryanair launching rescue fares for impacted passengers. In a statement, the airline said, “Ryanair yet again saves the day as Wizz Air cuts its routes, with a further 21 routes to/from Hungary, Romania, Luxembourg, Serbia, and Slovenia cut in addition to nineteen Polish routes cut just last week. As Europe’s most reliable and low fare airline, we will be happy to welcome Wizz Air passengers on our regular flights, including from Niš to Vienna, from just €19.99”. Further frequency changes remain possible as Wizz Air continues to deal the impact of its aircraft grounding, announced as early as last September. Wizz Air noted, “All affected customers have been informed. Passengers who have already purchased tickets have several options. You can either book another flight, get a 100% refund of the ticket price or benefit from a 120% credit from Wizz Air”.

I don't understand these hateful comments on Ryanair either. It's definitely not my favorite airline. At the same time, if I have a choice to fly directly to some holiday destination for - let's say - 150 EUR, instead of changing planes in e.g. FRA and paying 500 EUR, then the choice is obvious and thanks Ryan for that option.
Of course, the experience is shitty, but at the same time you get exactly what you pay for. You want a specific seat? You pay and you have it. You want a large suitcase? You pay and you take it. Simple.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous09:43

For people on ExYu, it's cause we're tired of Ryanair's plainly annoying PR team as well as their track history of lying

On the other hand, people hate them cause of the delays, very poor cabin sanitation (from my experience, I had a half-eaten apple and crisps on my seat when flying from Treviso) as well as the countless hidden fees that in the end cost you as much as just taking a legacy carrier with a far better service.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous10:27

Anonymous09:43 To the contrary, I don't and that's why I use them... even with the traveling time (were holidays) and fuel to these airports I still saved a ton over much more expensive alternatives from BEG with JU and W6... not to mention that direct flight options are greater from SOF for example...

In BEG, Wizz should look into changing their terrible (private) ground handler which has caused huge problems this winter with embarrassing errors. Hope they go for Menzies as well like in Budapest.

@09:27, W6 is handled by Sky Partner afaik, which handles LH Group, Aegean, etc. So not sure why you are hating on their ground handling, its fine. Its the airline itself that is the problem and embarrassing.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous07:19

Because when the ground handler loads all of the luggage meant for one flight onto the wrong flight and the plane takes off, only to inform the captains ten minutes after take off causing the flight to return back to Belgrade and causing the flight to then be cancelled, you know it it's time to change. You’re absolutely right, Skopje definitely needs Prague, Barcelona, Cyprus (LCA or PFO) and perhaps Krakow. Warsaw is already served and I don’t think there is a need for a LCC to launch WAW or WMI due to poor local demand, people fly this route for connecting onto TATL and European destinations, same for Madrid would be a nice add but not enough demand unless Iberia launches it which allows connecting flights. Nice in France has no chance tbh in my opinion but I might be wrong though

You are not wrong but out government can subsidise those routes instead of LUX. TAV didnt even mention LUX in any of their interviews when they were talking about new routes. WAW is only for transfer yes cause its too expensive to fly there for leisure. I also dont know why Wizz is ignoring Poland - Ohrid flights as well as Ohrid - Eindhoven.
