The Croatian government adopted a motion last week at its 293rd session to grant 900.000 euros in subsidies for the development of Mostar Airport’s air connectivity. In its decision, the Croatian government stated, “In order to improve the City of Mostar’s air connectivity with all regions of the Republic of Croatia, as well as key hubs in the European Union, funds amounting to 900.000 euros will be allocated to the City of Mostar to support existing and develop new air connectivity”. Croatia Airlines, which maintains operations between Zagreb and Mostar, is the beneficiary of subsidies provided by the Herzegovina - Neretva Canton in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Last year, Mostar Airport said a four-year agreement could be reached with Croatia Airlines, which would see the carrier introduce nonstop flights between the city and Rome, as well as add a new route each year for the duration of the deal.
Maybe the subsidies are there to benefit the Croatian populace in Mostar? Weird that Croatia would give subsidies to OMO otherwise

DeleteHow can the Croatian government possibly explain why it is funding an airport in another country to develop connectivity with airports in yet other countries? I understand how they can explain support routes from OMO to anywhere within Croatia, but outside Croatia this just looks like a non-starter

DeleteIt is supporting Croatian interests in Bosnia and Herzegovina, just as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the US and other countries fund various projects also.

ReplyDeleteIt's becuase election is soon. And for decades HDZ provided financial AID to Bosnia and Herzegovina since most people have dual citizenship and they are paid to vote and keep HDZ as the ruling party
ReplyDelete@14.59 The Canton of Basel in CH paid most of the extention of its tram net into Germany (Weil am Rhein) as well as France (Saint Louis). I believe the Canton wanted to improve commuting for thousands of employees who live in France or Germany, because it also profits from their labour force. (But then, many people in Basel use these trams to go shopping across the border - which does not support my argument).

Elections, however, surely also play a role.
