NEWS FLASH
Air Serbia has become the first airline in the region to carry out a fully electric powered turnaround of two of its aircraft last week. At its hub in Belgrade, and in cooperation with its ground handler Menzies Aviation, the airline’s Airbus A319 aircraft, registered YU-APL and YU-APF, bound for Podgorica and Tivat respectively, were handled and dispatched using specialised electric vehicles for aircraft pushback, baggage transport, and others, reducing the overall carbon footprint. “We are extremely pleased with the successful implementation of the first all-electric turnaround at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport, achieved in collaboration with Menzies Aviation. This initiative represents a step towards reducing the carbon footprint. Air Serbia continuously strives for socially responsible business practices, and this milestone confirms our dedication in that regard. We look forward to future cooperation and, together with Menzies, we will strive to have a positive impact on the entire community”. Air Serbia’s CEO, Jiri Marek, said.
Gluposti marketinga, kakvo smanjenje CO2, koliko emituju elektrane plus SO2.
DeleteAnd where is this electricity coming from? The vast majority of Serbia's energy production is coal-based. Nonsense, but it will be a nice article in the inflight magazine Elevate and a great contribution to Menzis' sustainability report.
ReplyDeleteBelgrade Airport has its own solar plant.
DeleteMaybe they are using electricity from nearby solar power plant? Corporations like Menzies and Vinci often demand that their providers are also green.
DeleteThe solar panel isn't that big to meet all the demand so coal based energy it is.
DeleteAnd Lignite isn't exactly great for the environment.
DeleteThe solar plant is smaller than the parking lot next to it.
DeleteOK, this is a marketing stunt, as there are other vehicles that are not electric, but I don't understand this level of uproar in the comments. Is it the fault of Menzies if Serbia is still in middle age and uses coal for electricity? Should they not introduce electric vehicles because of this? When Serbia finally manages to transition to green(er) energy, they should not be ready? What is wrong with you people? The Right brothers designed Flyer or A380? You have to start somewhere. Yes, majority of things pushed onto us is pure marketing, scams, frauds, and fossil fuel industry is doing everything they can to manipulate things and influence governments and regulators, but that doesn't mean that the problem is not real and that it should not be addressed. Sure, a few electric vehicles used by Menzies will not save the climate on their own, but it is a place to start. And you start with yourself and that is already good enough.

DeleteAt the end of 2021, a new energy plant for the production and distribution of heat and electricity was put into operation. New heating plant is equipped with the state of the art, tri-generation system with total heat capacity of 44 MW.
A solar plant that provides the airport with electricity obtained from renewable sources has also been put in operation. The new solar plant will produce approximately 1,130,000 kWh of green electricity annually, which is comparable to the annual consumption of about 430 households. In this manner, the airport’s CO 2 emissions (scope 1 & 2) will be decreased by 900 tons per year. The solar plant is located near the airport complex, on the road to Surčin, next to the new Tesla car park, and it consists of nearly 3,000 photovoltaic panels spread over a plateau of 15,900 m2 that convert sunlight into electric energy.
Two solid waste treatment plants are planned. Landside facility for the treatment of solid waste, intended for the treatment of waste generated in the wider airport complex, has been put into operation, and preparations are underway for the commissioning of a Airside facility for the treatment of solid waste, intended solely for the treatment of aircraft waste. The objective of the newly designed facilities for solid waste treatment is the collection, manual sorting and temporary storage of waste until it is transported to appropriate locations for further treatment and recycling, in accordance with the regulatory framework in the field of waste management.
The construction of a wastewater treatment plant with an area of 615 m2 is currently finishing, whereby the treated water will be used for irrigation and for cleaning the streets and asphalt surfaces. This facility was constructed in the southern part of the public area of the airport complex and was designed with the aim of treating wastewater generated by the operations at the airport complex.
@12:30 - thank you Vinci.
DeleteElectricity mix is maybe bad in Serbia now due to coal, but very very soon (trust me, I work in energy company), Serbia will have around 5 GW of wind and solar combined. Thats how much EPS gave permissions for renewables WITHOUT their own ballancing capacity. Additional capacity COULD be grid connected BUT they must provide their own ballancing options (batteries or foreign ballancing direct power).
DeleteSo yeah, from current 450 MW wind and literary no solar (maybe 45 MW total) we will have TENFOLD increase. And EPS is fine wkth it, it can cope with this new power.
Vinci is known for its environmental push, they started by saving water when cleaning toilets.
DeleteThanks to Menzies the upcoming summer months will be less chaotic, hopefully JU will regain its trust with affected passengers
ReplyDeleteGo woke, go broke.
ReplyDeleteIts all over now.
lol

Delete“were handled and dispatched using specialised electric vehicles for aircraft pushback, baggage transport, and others, reducing the overall carbon footprint”
ReplyDeleteWhat other vehicles? Catering truck is diesel powered as well refueling truck.
PR stunt failed..
You for sure know that they dont have an electric catering truck?
DeleteThese flights do not need to be catered with food.
DeleteWith electric refrigerator trucks, you have to chose if you want the fridge to run or the vehicle.
Delete@12:18
DeleteYou are right that there is no fresh food on flights to TIV and TGD, but water, plazma and business class catering still have to be loaded to a plane. And by catering truck that is.
*choose
ReplyDeleteSo many experts on sustainable energy on here..!
ReplyDeleteExactly, yet they live in the most polluted country on the continent.
DeleteYou are just plain idiots without any technical education.
DeleteThe wording is misleading and a more accurate phrase should be used in my opinion. Zero tailpipe emissions works best. Emissions also occur with braking and tire wear
ReplyDeleteComments about coal are perfect example of lack of knowledge some posters have. Thank you guys for demonstrating your ignorance and lack of brain power.
ReplyDeleteDidn't you do exactly the same by not providing a single smart argument? You eco-talibans usually attack others with no valid arguments
DeleteWe saw what mess Green parties and movements made in the West so these actions need to be closely monitored and supervised.
