Belgrade Airport runway opening delayed

NEWS FLASH

The opening of Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport’s overhauled runway 12L/30R (pictured) has been delayed, despite most of the infrastructure work having been completed. Initially, it was planned for the overhauled runway to open in June. However, as EX-YU Aviation News learns, the refurbished 3.400-metre runway, which also includes four rapid exit taxiways, a new LED lighting system and drainage, is unlikely to be put into use this year. Until then, aircraft will continue to use the inserted runway, opened in June of last year, which will become a taxiway once 12L/30R is reopened. The exact reason for the delay is currently unknown.

They don't care since they won the concession as a political favor (Macron Vucic bromance) so they won't lose it no matter what they do

Any unofficial reasons? Anything connected to Marathon incident?

Very possible. Something might be wrong with the runway configuration. Every delay has a good reason, especially in aviation. What is certain is that Vinci needs to work more in BEG. Yet to see the new young director....

The runway is used by airplanes to departure and arrival activities. There is a delay with opening of the runway. Delay could be due to lack of ribbon and scissors to cut the ribbon at the planned opening ceremony. All the people who didn't do anything of the work will be present at the ribbon cutting ceremony and will receivecreditfor their hard work.

Airport not releasing cause of this significant delay makes things far worse, as wild guesses about real cause will now be discussed at aviation sites and, more importantly, will get negative coverage by some media. Airport PR took a while to properly respond to recent cloud issues and are now once again demonstrating inability to preempt conspiracy theories and negative press by releasing proactive statement on the issue.

      +1
For such a lengthy delay after work is done I can only suspect that they discovered issues and proper rebuilding of some sections is needed.

I mean, there's no impact on anything, so I don't get the comments. Aircraft can still use the inserted runway, as they have for the past year.
Better make it safe than open early.

Why do you think that a brand new runway would be unsafe?

    2. Anonymous16:21

If there's no impact as you say, then there's no need for the second runway. Think before you post.

There was never need for it because it's not second runway.

So 12L and 12R are one runway? You okay?

    5. Anonymous08:17

They cannot be used at the same time. Separation too close. The inserted "runway" is really a taxiway and "spare" runway in case there is an incident on 12R/30L. As soon as it officially opens, there will be NOTAM advising that it will no longer be used for arrivals and departures.

That is a very long delay for a completed runway, what's going on?

  10. Anonymous20:12

From the beginning it was an utmost stupidity to build an inserted runway instead of a one that can be separately used.

You know nothing about aviation, hence your opinion. Belgrade doesn't need a second runway, and it costs a lot of money to keep a second runway operational. The temporary "inserted" runway will just become a taxiway soon, that's all.
