airBaltic cuts short Ljubljana winter operations

airBaltic will maintain flights between Riga and Ljubljana for only part of the upcoming winter season after modifying its scheduled this week. The carrier will run two weekly rotations between the two capitals until January 2, 2025, after which services will be suspended until March 3. The carrier had initially planned to maintain its Ljubljana operations throughout the entire winter season, which begins on October 27. airBaltic will receive 284.408 euros from the Slovenian government for its Ljubljana flights between April 24, 2024, and October 31, 2025, under the state’s policy to enhance air connectivity. Since launching operations on the route on April 24, up until the end of June, airBaltic handled 4.327 passengers on the route, for an average cabin load factor of 74.6%.

      How dare you say bad things about Fraport! They are the only reason we got so many airlines this year. Govt subsidies are insignificant compared to huge discounts Fraport gives! We are also first charter hub in the world. Pioneers in aviation!

      Were the times like the Belgrade ones - in the middle of the night. I was at first excited for Air Baltic to come to the region but then saw the flight times and it made the idea of a few day break when you have to fly at 215am seem not as appealing. I hope though it succeeds and then maybe they will look in the future to go for more sociable times.

      It is quite obvious that Riga and Baltics in winter is not a top holiday destination for Slovenians. No surprises here. So cutting the frequencies is unfortunately the only logical step. Or is Fraport somehow expected to force people onto planes?

      Popular airports have economies of scale. Smaller airports will always have more expensive costs.

      Most airlines don't refuel in Ljubljana anyway. They refuel at their base for the full rotation.

      Anon 10.48. You don' t know nothing about airlines traffic. In winter times LJU need Scandinavian routes and AB is top solution for that. LOT not cover all Scandinavian coutries.

      And SJJ as well, there's a big demand for both cheap travel destinations and good hubs for Scandinavia and airBaltic can provide both, given that there are still no Copenhagen flights from SJJ and Oslo is seasonal. airBaltic has connections to Bergen, Stavanger, Malmo and many more with ticket prices ranging from 30 to 50 euros per direction.

    The fact that slovenian aviation numbers for Winter 2024 and Summer 2025 are declining while with literally EVERY other countries there is an upward trend is highly concerning

    We need national carrier, and we need it now

    Seems the booking numbers for that time weren't where they were supposed to be. I support smart decisions like that. Don't fly empty airplanes as you'll gain nothing as a company with doing that.
