Qatar Airways leads Gulf battle against Flydubai in Zagreb

The two Gulf carriers operating flights to Zagreb - Qatar Airways and Flydubai - handled a combined total of 95.703 passengers to and from the Croatian capital during the first half of the year, according to data provided by the statistical office of the European Union. This represents an increase of 57.5% on last year but is still down 22.3% on the same period during the pre-pandemic 2019 with Emirates’ absence still being felt following its replacement by Flydubai. Qatar Airways, which offers the most flights and capacity between the two, carried 58.423 passengers, while Flydubai handled 37.280 travellers.

Zagreb route performance by Gulf carriers, H1 2024

Qatar Airways is operating ten weekly flights to Zagreb this year up from the three to five weekly rotations maintained during the first quarter of last year, and the daily service operated during the second quarter of 2023. However, frequencies are still down on 2019 levels, when the route was operated double daily throughout the year. During the first half of 2024, Qatar Airways registered an average cabin load factor of 85.1% on the Zagreb route. All flights were operated by the 132-seat Airbus A320 aircraft across the six-month period.

Flydubai is maintaining up to seven weekly flights to Zagreb this year, with services during the first quarter varying between five and six weekly. During the same period last year, the airline operated five to six weekly rotations on the route. Prior to the pandemic, flights between Dubai and Zagreb were operated by Emirates and its wide-body aircraft over the summers, while Flydubai took over during the quieter winter months. During the first half of 2024, Flydubai registered an average cabin load factor of 67.4% on the Zagreb route. All flights were operated by the 166-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, with exception to one service run by a wet-leased Smartwings B737-800 with the capacity to seat 189 passengers.

Those FZ numbers are just bad. I thought there would be more demand.

There is high yield market iz ZG. No need for low yield airline like FZ.

Not sure that with 67% load on 737 MAX EK will be coming soon.

They came in 2018 when FZ discontinued ZAG because of poor loads. So it is not related.

They discontinued ZAG because EK came, its the opposite.

Nope, Flydubai said on record they did not coordinate it with Emirates. And Flydubai ended flights to Zagreb a good 5-6 months before Emirates started their own.

Why they try again? It is obvious that fufe from Zagreb does Minken and Frankvurt not Dubai.

    13. Anonymous07:37

FZ might say all they want but there was coordination between the two. Especially since FZ passengers connect onto EK and viceversa, their statement was pure PR.

I think FZ will send their B787 to BEG and that's all widebody flights we will see from DXB to the region.

    3. Anonymous11:03

Maybe they also send the 787 to ZAG during summer if demand proves to be sufficient, but until then, FlyDubai is all we get. Would be nice if FZ launched Dubrovnik and Split as well, though

In any case, would be interesting to see passenger numbers of the Gulf carriers in SJJ.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous07:39

Can SJJ even handle a widebody? Also let's see what happens now with the new terminal since a large chunk of it entered the territory of Republika Srpska and they are complaining. I suppose they will ask for monetary compensation, this might be a problem for them as the income they get from FR is modest as is. Either they will make less money from them or they will have to increase taxes.

      Delete
    10. Anonymous08:58

First it's not a large chunk, it's a really small chunk, and now it's nothing, according to the new plans nothing will be build in the RS and second, the terminal was never planned in the RS, only the perimeter fence was planned in the RS. The new terminal being planned will be in the complete opposite side to the RS.

I believe BEG is operated by 320 with some more seats in economy, 132 as opposed to 120 on ZAG. Both have 12 seats in business class, but the 320 with less seats in economy has lie flat seats upfront. So overall 144 seats on BEG and 132 on ZAG on the 320.

    2. Anonymous11:32

During Q1 Belgrade had 10 weekly flights as well. Also the Belgrade route has a higher load factor. That is why the difference was so little despite ZAG having more flights.

    3. Anonymous07:40

Please be mindful of the fact that QR has scheduled two widebody flights to BEG this winter season.

Goes to show FZ would be smart to concentrate again on one airport ZAG/LJU. ZAG is the stronger one and would probably have approx. at least same LF as QR there if they didn't cannibalize themselves.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous18:22

FZ would be dumb to terminate LJU because then Slovenes would also switch to QR from ZAG. Plus, Slovenes are richer so they can afford to pay more for tickets.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous21:31

These statements about someone being rich is completely pointless. Slovenians literally drive for 3 hours just to catch a flight which is slightly cheaper than fly out of Ljubljana so they pay less.

    9. Anonymous05:37

@17:54 quickly contact all airlines that they should move from LJU to ZAG!

      Delete
    10. Anonymous07:42

Slovenes drive so much because Fraport is lazy to do their job. LJU's numbers are improving big time this year even compared to 2019 when there were loss making transfers from the region which JP was carrying.

Said it yesterday and will say it again. Most routes from ZAG seem to be still way down on 2019. Just goes to show the airport getting Ryanair was the right decision, otherwise it would still be behind 2019.
