Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is set to commence automated self-service passport control registration from November 1. A total of sixteen eGates (pictured above) are being installed at Belgrade Airport (eight each on arrival and departure). Initially the use of the eGates will be limited to Serbian passport holders who are eighteen years and over. eGates involve a two-step process. Passengers first scan their passport after which the first gate opens. The traveller’s photo is then taken for facial recognition, after which a second gate is opened, and the passenger can continue onwards with their journey.

DeleteNot true, UK, Australia for example allows kids from 10 years old, while some countries restrict kids usage based on their height (ie min 120cm).
DeleteIn majority of countries it is either 16+ or 18+ and it is because of privacy legislation. In most countries you can't store information on minors.
DeleteAnyway, it is said "initially", so this may be introduced in the later stage, same as the gates may be opened for the foreign passport holders.

Delete^ then you should ask Frankfurt Airport why they don't allow kids over 5 years to use egate. Stop making things up.
DeleteStop spreading nonsenseness. Minors have to be accompanied by adults and immigration officer have to check if that person is a parent or custodian and if that person have permit to accompany minor abroad. Egate can not determine such conclusion

DeleteThey do stamp Serbian passports when exiting Serbia, but they do not when entering.

ReplyDeleteWhat would that one be for? Usually the BP scan before the security is only to limit access for the non travelers, nothing to do with boarding itself, right?

DeleteThere will always be a need for human assistance, it's like that at any airport in the world, regardless of the technology applied at the entries or gates.
DeleteI fly from Brussels often and there is BP gate before security and then 2 or 3 persons scanning BPs again with manual scanners. Once on gate each BP is scanned again by 2-3 agents per gate. So, BP gates before security have nothing to do with boarding process.

DeleteVery good news as it's not uncommon for current passport booths to be empty, even at peak hours. Like this they will be working 24/7 so the line will move much faster.

There won't be restrictions regarding passport issuing. As long as it is valid.
DeleteBy now the oldest valid Serbian passports will be from late 2014, and I seem to remember that 2014 was the cut-off for the "old" pre-COVID automatic gate.

DeleteWhy only 8 each way? what happens if a couple break down? Get a whole bunch and open up the A gate entrance/exit again.

DeleteAt some places everyone still has to go to regular passport officer after going through eGate. It happened to me as I was leaving Italy. Officer didn't scan my passport but still looked at it. BTW it happened after the security check. WTF?
ReplyDeleteAt AMS you have to go get your passport stamped after using the eGate (UK passport).
DeleteThat is the exception. That only happens because the EU still hasn't managed to eradicate passport stamps. As in the stamps show how long you have stayed(non EU passports)In most countries Egates have replaced the need to stsmp.

DeleteSo if this is the future of airports, how come they decided that they no longer need to ask tons of questions about your plans and intentions when entering a country/eu or ask for you to show them the return ticket? Suddenly all that torture is gone and they are fine with you entering by just checking out the passport? If I understand this correctly in the future this will be how passport control is done, no border officers? Or i misunderstood something
ReplyDeleteIt is possible that in the future this would almost completely replace border police check, but by then systems of pre travel regulations and approval systems will be introduced, so if you've been cleared before the flight on board you just have to prove it's you which is the purpose of egates. Anyway, this is not gonna happen tomorrow.
