EU delays stampless entry

NEWS FLASH

The European Union has delayed plans to introduce an Entry/Exit System (EES) for non-EU citizens, which was to come into effect on November 10. Under the plan, the EES was to replace stamps in physical passports by digitally registering the data of non-EU citizens whenever they enter and exit external Schengen borders, to ensure they don’t stay in the Schengen area for more than ninety days in any 180-day period. Travellers were to be required to submit fingerprint and face biometrics on their first crossing, while subsequent EES crossings would only require a passport scan at a self-serve kiosk to match the ID document against enrolled biometric data. However, these plans have now been put on hold after concerns were raised by France, Germany and the Netherlands. The EU Home Affairs Commissioner, Ylva Johansson, said there was no new timetable for EES implementation, but it would be phased in. “It's clear that we're not going to be ready for November 10. We will be going for a phased approach, step by step". This delay is the latest in a long line of setbacks for the system, which was originally meant to be introduced in 2022.

It should be noted that this development is separate from the forthcoming launch of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), which is set to go live in May 2025 following years of delays. It will require visitors from sixty visa-free countries to apply for authorisation ahead of travel to 29 European nations, and to pay a fee of seven euros once every three years.

Why do you need to compare? Is criticism of the EU not allowed if you are from the Balkans?

Yeah the EU is supposed to be better than what we have in the Balkans, so it's very reasonable to judge it by higher standards. Imagine how insane it would sound an EU official justifying their incompetence by pointing at states Balkan lol

@anon 11:56 - in the Balkans we already know what it’s like. The EU on the other hand portrays itself as advanced and a leader in many sectors. It’s taken them how long since initial ETA? Plus note going into a phased approach? Seems like they are too many chiefs and not enough Indians.

@anon 12:19 Moreover, I think is worse of for us in Balkans as EES was intended to enable automatic controls i.e. we should be able to use automatic entry and not wait like cattle, up to 2-3 hrs for border police officer and then very often have a 10-15 minute interview us even for the color of our underware.

I can't imagine the billions of euros that were spent on these two projects that are constantly pushed back. And we are bound to encounter huge bugs when they get implemented.

You'll love it when it's working.
First time use, registration, biometrically, then each time you travel after that, you'll breeze through the gates

Some countries outside Europe don't require any checks when you leave. You just walk out. That's even better than breezin' through the gates.

The fact that the citizens of those countries want to migrate to the EU and not the opposite should tell you all you need to know.

What you need to know is that US and Canada are some of those countries.

I'm sure when you depart the US and Canada they do not check your passport! 😂

There is no exit passport control on leaving the US just TSA security.

And that's why so many international flights leave from domestic terminals gates but have to arrive at terminals which have inbound passport processing unless they have arrived from a country with pre-clearance such as Canada, Ireland or UAE (Abu Dhabi airport).
