Macedonia to reveal airline bidders for new Skopje and Ohrid routes

The Macedonian Ministry for Transport and Communications is set to soon announce the list of airlines that responded to the recent public call for establishing flights to Skopje and Ohrid airports in exchange for subsidies. This tender has reportedly attracted the highest level of interest from airlines since the subsidy program began in 2012. Previously, all public calls were won by Wizz Air, with Lufthansa also receiving funds in the most recent round last year. The new three-year subsidy program will run from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027, and, unlike the past twelve years, it was open to all international destinations, not limited to European carriers and routes.

The Macedonian government has already hinted at some of the upcoming developments. Flights between Dubai and Skopje are expected to be restored next year following a five-year hiatus, while services between Istanbul and Ohrid are anticipated to be launched as well. Furthermore, the Macedonian Minister for Transport and Communications, Aleksandar Nikoloski, recently held talks with both the Spanish and Czech ambassadors over the introduction of flights. The operator of Skopje and Ohrid airports, TAV Macedonia, has earmarked the resumption of services between the country’s capital and Barcelona as a priority. Flights between the two cities were last maintained by Wizz Air in January 2022.

Wizz Air is also believed to have participated in the recent tender. The airline has been facing ongoing engine issues impacting its fleet, leading to a reduction in services from its Skopje base. Despite winning the previous public call, the low cost carrier failed to fulfill its commitments, launching only two out of the four planned routes. It did not commence planned operations from Skopje to Stuttgart and Luxembourg. Over the past few years, Wizz Air has discontinued several routes it operated from the Macedonian capital prior to the pandemic, including Vaxjo, Turku, Larnaca, Hannover, and Barcelona. The airline has also ceased operations from Ohrid to Basel, London Luton, Milan Malpensa, and Malmo.

Completely forgot Wizz Air used to fly Skopje-Larnaca. Wonder if there is a chance that route comes back.

Wizz Air: Skopje - Prague, Barcelona, Salerno; Ohrid – Basel, Milan MXP (or Rome)
Eurowings: Skopje – Stuttgart and Dusseldorf
    Lufthansa: Skopje - Munich
    Flydubai: Skopje - Dubai
    AJet: Ohrid – Istanbul

They probably have some clause in their contract that you can't penalize them for events outside of their control.

    5. Anonymous17:19

Bollocks. They still have 150 aircraft (plus a lot of wet-leases) flying. It was purely their decision to cut routes where they had contractual obligation to fly (and they got money for that). They could easily continue every SKP routes if they wanted to.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous10:40

It's not really a 1.5 hour drive, its more of a 3 hours drive depending from where you're in Skopje, and those 3 hours are without delay at the border. If there is a line, it will be more, but again I don't think people want to use a plane to go to Thessaloniki, although with the metro starting to operate there it might be actually wiser, but most of the people are going there for a weekend or even for a day.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous10:53

The delay on border is just in summer pick season , other then that I pass the border for 1 min and from Kavadarci I am at the airport max 2 hours.

    5. Anonymous10:58

One thing is from Kavadarci, another thing is from Skopje :) And even from Kavadarci if you go during the day nowadays and head to the airport, you might get stuck at the road around Thessaloniki where the construction is happening..

      Delete
    2. Anonymous10:00

It was suspended because the number of tourists drasticly decreased in Macedonia after the pandemic. This route was mostly used by tourists coming to Macedonia, not by macedonians going to BCN. Thats why Wizz stopped it in 2022, there were still restrictions back then and the global tourism had decreased.

Macedonian aero - clubs have been without state support since 2017. Macedonian police and army receive 0 euro subsidy and air traffic control receives no money from the government. The subsidies are offered for the passengers that will be handled on the NEW routes that will be opened thanks to this tender. So if one route is opened from the tender and operated twice a week with a plane of 200 seats capacity, that is around 50K euros per month, or 500k euros for one year, not 39 millions. Gosh! You are even mentioning the police which is full of money by the people who give them 50 euros instead of paying the ticket they got? Ridicilous!
