Authorities in Saudi Arabia have granted slots to an undisclosed airline for the introduction of flights between Jeddah and Maribor next summer season. Based on the initial coordination report for Jeddah Airport for the 2025 summer season, an airline has been granted ninety movements, or 45 return flights from the Saudi port city to Maribor, with a total capacity of 15.660 seats, or 174 seats per flight. Jeddah is home to flag carrier Saudia, as well as low cost airlines flyadeal and Flynas. Although the carrier in question has not been identified, Flynas’ Airbus A320neo aircraft seat exactly 174 passengers.
Since these slots were granted based on initial applications, it is possible that the airline in question may decide to use those departure and arrival times for another destination instead, meaning there is no guarantee the flights will go ahead at this point. If the service does proceed as planned, it would mark the first scheduled operations between Saudi Arabia and Slovenia. In addition, Slovenia would become only the third market in the former Yugoslavia with scheduled flights to the Kingdom, following Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. Based on the slot coordination reports, Flynas has been granted a total of 35.406 movements at Jeddah Airport next summer with another 292 yet to be allocated, flyadeal has been granted 21.209 movements with 240 yet to be allocated and Saudia has been approved 75.324 movements, with a further 480 unallocated.
The development would mark a major coup for Maribor Airport, if it comes to fruition. The airport has struggled to attract any scheduled commercial flights in years. Furthermore, the airport’s passenger terminal sustained significant damage from a summer storm in June. The airport's roof, which was heavily impacted, has since been fixed. However, a more comprehensive restoration of the airport is anticipated to extend until the summer. Maribor Airport currently manages a low volume of passengers. During the first three quarters of the year, it handled 1.919 travellers, primarily through sport charters. Other activities, including sports and recreational flights, pilot training, and helicopter emergency services continue to operate at the airport.
Nice it's leisure route. Will be good in LJU, but ....
ReplyDeleteBravo Fraport!
ReplyDeleteMaribor Airport is state-operated...
DeleteIt was clearly a joke about absolutely ridiculous comments on this site.
DeleteWatch yourself, you'll be accused of being a Fraport fanboy now.
DeleteHoly...
ReplyDeleteDidn't have this on my bingo card for 2025 :D
ReplyDeleteMust ask why did they choose Maribor of all places
ReplyDeleteYe that's my main concern as well
DeleteBostjancic was in Saudi Arabia two weeks ago and I believe they discussed about possible Saudi investments in Slovenia. Why MBX? Probably because Fraport doesn't care.
Deletestop with the BS that fraport does not care. And not to mention they will definetly use these slots for something else.
Deleteand it is also possible that mbx was choosen because graz is close and many arabs live in austria... (though why didnt they go to graz in that case)
Yeah we see how they care LOL!
DeleteProbably won't materialize in the end but that is one niche route :D
ReplyDeletePls Qatar to Doha or Wizz to Abu Dhabi from Ljubljana. Flynas will work Saudi guys like green nature for example their favourite destinations are Bosnia, Azerbaijan or Georgia.
ReplyDeleteIt’s not going to happen.
DeleteThank you for your insightful thoughts.
Deleteneeded to read this article three times to process te news. haha
ReplyDeletedefinitely one of the most bizarre headlines this year
DeleteAll of us from SLO wants to visit Jeddah 🤣
DeleteSaudi Arabia has totally transformed in the recent years. Spending couple of days for leisure there would be great.
DeleteMost travellers would probs be Saudis regardless
DeleteNo it wasnt. I was there 2 years ago. You cannot drink even beer in hotel, not to mention a wine or whiskey for example in cafe or restaurant..
DeleteYou are not allowed to flirt with Saudi women, even tough they want to, etc. Everyone still go to nearest Bahrein for hanky panky..
Been to the KSA 10+ times. KSA has changed drastically in the last 10 yrs. Definitely a place to see, their coast can be super pitoresque.
DeleteJust go there if you want to be choped or sliced..
DeleteThere are pleanty of other free or open places
I really hope one day some LCC make major MBX deal and slaps Fraports face
ReplyDelete+1 +1 +1 +1 +1 +1
DeleteStop with conspiracies! Fraport loves low cost airlines!
DeleteMost people from Maribor don't even know they have an international airport and Maribor has one of the worst tourist offerings in the country. What exactly makes you think any route from Maribor would work?
DeleteThis could be massive for MBX. Fingers crossed they don't change their mind.
ReplyDeleteTrue if this is real.
DeleteHow do you mean real? You want to say the author made it up?
DeleteNo, the airline applied for slots. It means they have the ability to launch the flights, but they're not scheduled yet. Afaik Ryanair also applied for Dublin-Niš once and then never launched it
DeleteAnon 9:33; No I don't want to say that the author made it up but we have seen stories in the past about Maribor-Hong Kong flights and how MBX will become one of the biggest cargo bases in Europe....so thats why I wouldn't get just excited yet:
DeleteThe difference is that an actual existing airline from Saudi Arabia has applied for slots to operate these flights.
DeleteThank you for the weekly fose of laughter, im so glad that every now and then a report like this is published.
ReplyDeleteDose*
DeleteWell an airline did file slots for this route...
DeleteFlynas or Riyadh Air, flights will launched: not sure.
ReplyDeleteGenuine question is who would fly on the Jeddah-Maribor route?
ReplyDeleteIndeed. Who? Lol its almost a joke of an idea that would work
DeleteTourists and business people from KSA, but JED-LJU would be far more logical for that.
DeleteThere is 0 potential for either Maribor or Ljubljana from Saudi Arabia. Zero.
DeleteExpert shows up once again.
DeleteI would understand and wouldn’t question Ljubljana-Jeddah flights but i don’t get why Maribor? I mean I am more than happy if it’s true for Maribor airport but I doubt it would materialise
DeleteWhole Slovenia, south of Austria, west Hungary and people around Zagreb area? What else do you want?
DeletePassengers who would fly to Jeddah.
DeleteMaribor's huge Saudi community...
DeleteBravo for Maribor!
ReplyDeleteThis is for Ljubljana flights, TBA most probably when the SLO governmental delegation comes to KSA in December. Maribor was used because it's owned by Slo gov so they fast tracked the documentation
ReplyDeleteMakes sense... Let's hope it happens
DeleteI will never understand the sale of the main national airport to anyone. It's like selling the front door of your home to someone. I get the concession, even a long term one, but the full out sale... no.
ReplyDeleteStop with conspiracies! Sale to Fraport is one of the best things govt did!
Delete
