Wizz Air anticipates expanding its operations from both Skopje and Ohrid, building on its recently announced new routes from the country. The low cost carrier will introduce services from the Macedonian capital to Barcelona, Lyon and Stuttgart, along with a new route from Ohrid to Basel after securing state subsidies for their launch. Wizz Air’s CEO, Jozsef Varadi, who visited Skopje last week, said, “We have been in Macedonia for some time now and essentially what you are now seeing in the country is largely what we have established and delivered in terms of travel infrastructure for the Macedonian people and for those who want to come and visit Macedonia. I think the government can make different choices as to how they want to support airline development and how they want to contribute to stimulating the market. We are happy with whichever way the government chooses to do that. I think our objective here in Macedonia is to make sure that we continue to develop airline infrastructure and make travel accessible to people”.
Mr Varadi acknowledged that the carrier's network cuts have affected the Macedonian market but emphasised that Wizz Air plans to rebound by restoring frequencies and routes starting next year. “We have been in a very particular situation in the current year because some of our engines have been recalled by the engine manufacturers for inspection and, as a result, we have a significant portion of our fleet on the ground. Around 20% our fleet is non-operational. So, out of the 225 aircraft that we have in our fleet, 45 aircraft are not operating because of these engine inspections now. They will come back over time but, at the moment, they are not operating. As a result, we had to make some cancellations, not only in Macedonia but across our entire network. This engine situation will stabilise. We are at the tipping point as we speak”. He added, “In 2025 we are expecting the business to grow 15 - 20% which is significant because right now we are carrying 63 million passengers a year. We would be looking at almost 75 million passengers to be carried next year so that will create opportunities for growth in Macedonia adding back some of the routes that have been cut and also looking at new routes to be added to the to the system”.
The CEO highlighted that in addition to cities in the European Union, Wizz Air sees value in expanding from Macedonia to other parts of the continent and beyond, however, he noted the airline is restricted due to bilateral air agreements. “We want to be a good citizen and create value for Macedonia. The problem we are facing here is that Macedonia has an agreement with the European Union with regard to European Open Skies so it is unlimited to fly between the Europe Union and Macedonia, but when you try to enter other geographies then those destinations remain subject to regulatory approvals, and they may become difficult because the system works very differently from the Open Sky. That's why our focus has been on developing our European network from Macedonia but, of course, if there are other opportunities we could consider we would be looking at those opportunities too”.
Hopefully they bring back the A321s to the Skopje base
ReplyDeleteMost likely they will next summer
DeleteThey will as those remaining 30 A320s they will need in smaller bases such as Timisoara, Sibiu, Craiova, maybe if they reopen Suceava base, Vilnius, Wroclaw, Katowice, Debrecen… With 200+ A21N on orders its not a question that BEG and SKP will see those jets again.
DeleteW6 for 4-5 years will recieve new planes , as the CEO said Macedonian market is important for them , and its always on their focus
DeleteWe saw how much we are in their focus, dont believe everything you hear.
DeleteDid they want their fleet to be grounded ?
Delete20:06 +1
Delete@21:16 Dont mix things up. First of all not all of their fleet is grounded, second of all they are getting a few new planes every month. If they could expand in FCO, MXP, OTP and TIA then they would have expended from Skopje as well if we were in their focus.
DeleteOk so you are comparing Italian market and Macedonian ? So Macedonian market should be in their focus more then Italian right ?
DeleteWould love to see them bring more routes connecting the Balkans internally – travel within the region is still quite limited.
ReplyDeleteThey are planing big expand of their network.
DeleteSKP-LJU is working out great. Maybe they could consider some more intra EX-YU routes from Skopje
DeleteI am not sure for intra Ex yu but for expanding across Europe yes for sure
Deleteif SKP-LJU is working, why not 2 flights per week for summer OHD-LJU? Develop the product where you have already a success, or?
DeleteI guess its different market needs , OHD needs tourists and more summer routes and couple year round, and SKP needs more regular flights through the year..
DeleteAnd summer destinations from us from SKP such as Spain, Italy and Cyprus.
DeleteSpain is in big demand especially from SKP , finally we get back Barcelona , but still missing Madrid which I hope alot to see in near future , Mallorca or Tenerife would be also nice summer edition , we now need to do connections tor reach this places from SKP
DeleteFirst i think we will see 5 pw on Ljubljana skopje route
Delete^^
DeleteWe will never have Palma or Tenerife flights from Skopje so that you me and 20 other people can use it once in their lifetime. I would like to go Tenerife sure but there will never be flights from SKP. MAD, Malaga or Valencia can work both for us and for tourists coming here in Macedonia. Nothing else.
DeleteFor begining enough will be barcelona and madrid
DeleteCopanhagen,Stockholm, and Bremen, they put thouse routes as a seasonal routes. And as we know W6 leaves Cologne/Bonn airport.
ReplyDeleteThis giwes me hope that they will come back stronger next year and then we can expect good numbers for SKP , and hopefully this situation not to happend again.
ReplyDeleteHopefully they'll add Hannover
ReplyDeleteYeah that would be nice
DeleteAlso I would like to see Dusseldorf
DeleteYou have Dortmund.
DeleteDUS is DUS
DeleteYes but we need at least Dusseldorf and Munich
DeleteGo and fly from PRN then. I prefer to have AMS, PRG, BCN, NCE, MAD, LCA so that i can travel insted of you and the remaining diaspora to come here directly from DUS.
DeleteWe have big diaspora in Dusseldorf as well Munich
Delete@20.10 wow thats some pseudo-elitist bullsh*t honestly! DUS is the 3rd largest airport in Germany with over 15 MILLION PAX with flights from Emirates, Etihad and so on ...
DeleteSo? AMS, LHR, CDG are well much better connected then DUS, how come u dont request them?
Deletebecause DUS makes more sense as a destination. @21.28 told you why
Deletethe level of arrogance in this sentence is another level "so that i can travel insted of you and the remaining diaspora to come here directly from DUS"
They might consider Abu Dhabi as well
ReplyDeleteThey had plans for Abu dhabi last year , but when the engine issues start they cancel that idea , its possible to see that
DeleteThere will be flights to Dubai with FZ, flights to Abu Dhabi hardly make any sense
DeleteThis was way before flydubai come back to SKP again , even previous minister for transport had a meeting with the ambassador for direct flights
DeleteI just read somewhere that they expect to keep having engine issues until 2027. But it's good at least that growth from SKP is planned next year.
ReplyDelete45 planes have engines ,you cannot fix them for couple of months , that is huge number or aircrafts so it will take at least 2 years for all of them to be done , its massive process , but how they get fixed plane they put it into service , or step by step ...
DeleteNo, its not true that 45 planes have engine problems. More aircraft have maybe 100-120. I have followed what they are doing lately. They keep 40 jets grounded, when one finishes with the checks and everything they are doing while they are grounded and returns to service, another one which was in service until then is going to be grounded. I remember that for next year they said that 30 planes will be grounded.
DeleteOk I am telling what their CEO said that 45 planes are with engine problems , probably are more with the same existing issue , how they fix one they put it on serivce , but its still big number and takes time , probably summer 2025 will be way better situation then now
DeleteA yes for that u are right buddy.
DeleteMakes sense, they will probably have to return one additional based plane in Skopje so they will also increase frequencies on many routes since the three new ones are just 2x per week
ReplyDeleteHow many planes do they based now in Skopje?
DeleteFour and on certain days five.
DeleteWhen Hannover back 😔
ReplyDeletenever.
DeleteThe flights from the public tender are still not bookable, for example Turkish is still not offering Ohrid
ReplyDeleteNo they will be bookabale after new year , because they will recieve money after 01.01.2025 , so you can expect them in the system January
Delete@12.35 povtorno ti lol. They are receiving money once they REPORT how many passengers they had on their flights. the DONT get money during booking procedures, hillarious!!
Delete13:02 the start of the new tender is after new year , and will be available until 31.12.2027 thats the time frame when they recieve money. Nobody will giwe you money when you dont know the exact number of passengers
Deletewtf you are talking about, they can start with the bookings right now @11.42 is totally right
DeleteSo why they are not starting then ?
DeleteBecause Turkish Airlines is a big airline with 400 jets and its not that easy to make the summer season timetable overnight. Be happy that u will atleast have IST flights now.
Delete@12:35 Bozhe gospodee prostaci ej. The airline will get money for every single passenger HANDLED by them, not for every minute between 01.01.2025 and 01.01.2027. For anyone who travels between those dates, the government will give money to the airline. So if there are 10 passengers traveling on 13.05.2025 for exaple, Turkish will get 120 euros from the government. If a total of 150.000 passengers traveled on that route from 01.01.2025-01.01.2027 then 1.8 million euros will be given to Turkish Airlines.
I only believe it when I see it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Wizzy could easily (re-)introduce Larnaca, some other Greek Islands, as well as routes to Spain, on a seasonal basis. The same goes for Ohrid, with seasonal routes to Western Europe, Poland, the Nordics, and the Baltics.
Otherwise, Ryanair and Transavia (who could easily operate seasonal routes out of Amsterdam to both Skopje and Ohrid) are more than welcome to finally expand into Macedonia.
they are begging them to block Ryanair to start flights to SKP
ReplyDeleteI am thinking the same!!
DeleteFR is a profitable company, yet MK government get into bed with W6 who continue to post losses.
Delete"however, he noted the airline is restricted due to bilateral air agreements" makes little sense to me to be honest...
ReplyDeletewhere did they want to expand?? Only Switzerland comes to my mind and perhaps Turkey and maybe Tel Aviv (in peaceful times).
Switzerland is not an issue, they fly to Basel and it counts as French airport.
Deletethere is Geneva, Bern ... (lets put ZRH aside)
Deletenow they have to fly to Lyon and Friedrichshafen
I think he is thinking for middle east flights , not for europe
Deletehm UAE and MK have signed open sky agreements although in the text it says "designated national flag carriers" which Wizzair Abu Dhabi is not (?)
DeleteMaybe this solves the mistery about the SKP-AUH flights
@Anon 14:46 Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is literally a designated national flag carrier. UAE's Cabinet approved the the designation of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi as a national carrier of the UAE in Jun-2020. I will never understand why, but Wizz loves to work with corrupt governments. That's why they never worked out in Norway or Germany when they failed to sustain a base.
DeleteThey didn't start AUH-SKP because it didn't make financial srnse for them. It had nothing to do with bilateral or aircraft shortage as this route was negotiated in 2021 but nevet materialized
Deleteyou obv. work for them ... lol
Deleteat least they show some commitment ... its the second meeting in one month
ReplyDeleteor they have smelled something
Of course they are trying everything just not Ryanair to enter the market , and they are succesfull in that ;)
Deleteif it was was me I would say: you can have it but you nee to commit for two more aircrafts based in SKP. They are selling it very cheap ;)
DeleteYes 8 jets in SKP would be great, then we will see 4 million pax per year. They will easly increase DTM and FMM to 10 weekly, BSL to twice daily, BTS and LJU five weekly, NUE, FKB four weekly, HHN five weekly, MMX, HAM, BER, EIN, CRL daily, GOT four weekly, TRF, TSF, BUD, SZG will stay two weekly, BVA four weekly with MXP, BLQ and FCO. They can also open flights to Larnaca again, introduce Catania, Naples, Nice, Prague and thats it. They cam do anything if they want overnight, no talks needed, but they dont want to.
Deleteno they didnt, they disapeared completely from the destinations list
ReplyDeleteSo basicly its 3 + 1 route ..
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how there are airplanes to Skopje but not to Nis. Subsidies work miracles, even planes with engine troubles seem to disappear.
ReplyDeleteand NIs has no PSO??? do you know how much the IST route form NIs alone cost the serbian taxpayers? search here on the blog for it
DeleteWhen a flight to Palermo ?
ReplyDelete
