easyJet plans return to Skopje with new route

Low cost carrier easyJet is set to return to the Macedonian market next year with the introduction of flights between Paris Orly and Skopje. According to the French financial newspaper “Les Echos”, flights are expected to be scheduled soon. The new service will see the budget airline return to Skopje after discontinuing operations from Geneva last month. Furthermore, it will expand connectivity between Macedonia and France, which will grow alongside Wizz Air’s planned new flights to Lyon, also launching in 2025. easyJet entered the Macedonian market in November 2021 buoyed by the quick recovery of the Visiting Friends and Relatives sector during the coronavirus pandemic.

easyJet will face indirect competition on the route. Wizz Air maintains services between Skopje and Beauvais, advertised as Paris, however, the airport is almost ninety kilometres from the city centre. On the other hand, Orly is located some twenty kilometres from downtown Paris. Last year, Wizz Air handled 39.918 passengers between Skopje and Beauvais for an average cabin load factor of 91.5% across the duration of 2023. The airline utilised the Airbus A321 aircraft on 61% of its flights, while the A320 was deployed on the rest. easyJet has a base at Orly and is the airport’s fourth-largest airline by available capacity this year behind Transavia France, Vueling and Air France.

easyJet had previously said it is unfazed by Wizz Air’s presence on the Macedonian market. It noted, “easyJet is focused on its successful strategy to expand across Europe and operates in the best interests of the company and its customers ensuring the attractiveness of its network. This means the airline concentrates its efforts on maintaining and developing routes which prove popular with passengers. We consider competition only in regards of tactic opportunities that can be complementary to our strategy”. Skopje Airport had previously said one of its main goals is to secure nonstop connectivity to major European cities and large hubs.

Apart from Ljubljana and Croatia, AF does not fly anywhere else in ex-YU, so it is not realistic.

Even in Ljubljana and Zagreb, it's HOP! that flies.

If HOP! is Air France then Eurowings is Lufthansa.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous09:37

Biggest difference between Hop and mainline is that in business class Hop does not block seat next to you. Otherwise they are more or less the same which is not the case between LH and EW.

      Delete
    7. Vlad10:03

Eurowings is to Lufthansa what Transavia is to Air France. Hop! is just a brand for regional aircraft with no difference in service, so the comparison is nonsense.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous10:44

Exactly EW and LH are low cost and legacy. Air France and HOP are the same. They even recently changed HOP to Air France HOP so people would not think it's different.

      Delete
    9. Anonymous16:38

The history of brand is going like this: HOP! - HOP for Air France - Air France Hop - Air France (operated by Hop). On 1 September 2019, all Hop flights moved to operate under the Air France brand and flight code. All aircraft will be gradually repainted into the Air France livery.

      @Viktor,
Easyjet serves AMS from PRN. Won't compromise its own route.
Wizz to Eindhoven covers enough for SKP market anyways.
SKP should push for Madrid/Barcelona/Lisbon instead. Would be great.

      Barcelona is served by Wizz.
Easyjet doesnt care about Wizz (as you could read in the article) otherwise they wouldnt consider Orly at all

AMS is definitely in big demand for SKP , we need that route with Easyjet or any other airline!

The huge problem with AMS is slots. With the Dutch trying to constrict slots at AMS, I doubt SKP-AMS happens.

If there is not a big demand sofar for the Caribbean, one of the reasons is the horrible connection oportunities from SKP. Caribbean is not an expensive destination, getting there is the problem.

    2. Anonymous11:18

Yields. They could use the plane somewhere else and with 90% LF make more money. Just because someone cuts a route does not mean it's empty.

I think that is bs. Probably there were some other routes were they can earn more money. They resumed Tel Aviv and start new routes to Rovaniemi, Tromso and Tblissi. And they serve Pristina which is close to Skopje.
