Eurowings puts planned Berlin - Ljubljana service on hold

NEWS FLASH

Eurowings has decided not to proceed with its plans to launch flights between Berlin and Ljubljana next summer, Ljubljana Airport has confirmed. The airline had initially applied for subsidies from the Slovenian Ministry of Infrastructure for the Berlin - Ljubljana service, but later opted for Dusseldorf instead. Tickets for flights between the two capitals were never put on sale. Eurowings stated that flights from Berlin may be introduced at a later date, contingent on the performance of the Dusseldorf service, which is set to commence on April 12, 2025.

How does Düsseldorf make more sense than Berlin? But I'm still positive that Berlin flights will eventually happen.

Mutti Hansa does well on BER transfers via FRA and MUC...

North Rhine-Westphalia has about 18 million inhabitants, Berlin-Brandenburg about 6.4 and Düsseldorf plus the surrounding area is economically richer than Berlin

LJU-BER city pair has about 3x more (transfer, via FRA, MUC) passengers than LJU-DUS. I assume "mutti" theory is correct.

Eurowings does transfer through Dusseldorf very well. Berlin not so well. So it makes sense that they do only Dusseldorf if they have to choose between the two.

At the moment transfer options offered from LJU (and are on sale) are very poor... Only a few destinations with bad schedules.

Easyjet operated the route until Covid. During that Time they closed their Berlin base.

Do you not realise Lufthansa and Eurowings are the same company? Do you think Eurowings management had one idea and Lufthansa management then shut it down weeks later? I don't understand the logic behind these conspiracy theories.

Yes they are owned by the same group but they operate separately. Just look at how they treat OS.

Eurowings' main base is Düsseldorf Airport. They have about 40 aircraft there. From Berlin they only make P2P flights

3 years of success is correct, but the point is not successful enough compared to other routes, otherwise it would have continued. Or why don't they fly the route anymore?

    8. Anonymous15:10

In 2019 they had LF of 81%. Not bad, not great. Then COVID came and they never restored the route. Today I am sure it would be successful route, in some years BER was No1 of LJU unserved routes.

  6. Anonymous15:18

81% is not great for a LCC and the yield probably wasn't that good. Better to fly somewhere more profitable.

Most commenters here do not realize how specific the Slovenian market is. You will have full flights during school winter&fall holidays, during Easter and during summer while there are certain periods where flights are less than 30% full. FlyDubai and Turkish react well to this by sometimes sending another daily flight or a widebody, while other airlines drasticaly reduce or completely cancel the routes for a month or two during the low season.

Now it makes sense why Eurowings discontinued Dusseldorf-Zagreb. The reality is that Zagreb and Ljubljana are for many people one single market.

No no, 15:53 is right, they might as well just close the airport, if we do not get BER flights.

Exactly. Airports like Berlin or Hamburg are struggling big time since they became extremely expensive in a market that is becoming very price sensitive. Just look at what JU and W6 are charging for flight from BEG. These fares are not so high because they are greedy (at least that's not the only reason), their costs are also extremely high.

BER knows that they are the only real airport in the old DDR so they can get away with charging high fares. Naturally this will limit their growth as we are seeing today.

HAM increased their prices quite a lot and look what was the end result. Airlines have massively cut flights from there. BER is serving a much poorer area so these high fares will be a much bigger problem for them.
