Swiss boosts Sarajevo and Ljubljana service

NEWS FLASH

Swiss International Air Lines will increase frequencies from its Zurich hub to both Sarajevo and Ljubljana next summer. The airline will maintain between six and nine weekly rotations to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s capital, up from between five and seven during the summer of this year. The carrier will operate six weekly flights in April, May, June, September and October, up from five, while nine weekly rotations will be operated during peak season travel in July and August, up from seven weekly. In Ljubljana, Swiss is increasing frequencies to twelve weekly. Last summer it operated eleven weekly rotations, with exception to July and August when they ran twelve times per week. Changes remain possible.

Great! How come Swiss has 14 fpw during winter and only 12 fpw during summer in Ljubljana?

They don't have the capacity for more, this summer season Ljubljana will see:
      -E190 Helvetic
      -E195 Helvetic
      -E290 Helvetic
      -E295 Helvetic
      -A223 AirBaltic
      -A221 Swiss
      -A223 Swiss
      -A320 Swiss
      -A32N Swiss
      -A321 Swiss
      -A321Neo Swiss

So they are throwing practically anything that they can at LJU

In winter when they have less routes, they can easily just use the best aircraft for the route

Makes sense, thanks! Is that data easily accessible online? Where can I look it up?

Swiss is pretty good at using the same aircraft as is listed when booking tickets, so you can check it out on their website

3 of the 12 will be A320 flights as of now. But this changing flight schedule and reducing from current 14 to down 12 or 11, is not really "user friendly".

A friend of mine just flew with OS and LX to CAI and back. On the way there OS actually gave them a sandwich and drinks, on the way back LX just handed them a glass of water (4 hour flight).

Even Lufthansa serves meals on flights longer than three hours. Seems like Swiss has the worst onboard product from the three. It's funny since LX is the second most profitable division within Lufthansa Group.

The buying power of Swiss citizens gives companies in Switzerland good opportunities for profit. However, it must also be said that the LH Group is reporting more profit at Swiss in order to benefit from the more favorable tax environment in Switzerland. Internal workloads from the parent company in Frankfurt are reduced or not charged to Swiss at all.

I flew FRACAI and there was a full meal service on Lufthansa. It was quite nice.

Without the new KLM flights, the information about the LJU summer timetable would be quite depressing.

Yes, BA too, and new Eurowing flights... On the other hand, Air Montenegro is reducing flights to Tivat. Let's wait and see what happens with the capacities of LH, Air Serbia, etc. Well, it's not depressing, but it's not very exciting either.

I know for a fact people were complaining about Adria's fare prices, which (at least towards the end) were quite reasonable. Are the same people actually flying with LH, LX, KL, BA, ... Every time I check, their fare prices are 300€+. I don't understand why people are so excited by the fact that LJU is being served by national carriers who are charging a premium for their services (for example, flying out of VCE is almost every time cheaper than LJU).

You are free to come up with a free market solution on how to make flights out of LJU cheaper. The only solutions we read here is that Slovenian government should subsidize flights to holiday destination either in the form of a national carrier or in the form of giving special tax cuts to a certain private airline, which is just insane.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous17:48

So you basically agree that the current solution is the best one?
When you did your cost analysis of a national carrier, did you also take into account taxes paid by the company and employees? How about better connectivity? It still hasn't recovered to Adria levels. As a frequent flyer (luckily I have access to ID90 tickets), it's very inconvenient to have one or two LH flights to FRA/MUC.
And as far as I know (and correct me if I'm wrong), the government is subsidizing (some) of the the carriers. Unfortunately, it doesn't to reflect positively on fare prices.

I do not know what the best solution is as there is no one single perfect solution. People have different travel habits and preferences, so your ideal solution might not be the best for someone else. We also live in capitalism and airlines will charge the highest possible price that they can in order to turn the highest possible profit. LJU is having a reality check and you cannot compare the situation today with the times that are long gone.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous19:55

Absolutely. However, I do believe national carriers are taking advantage of the situation in LJU in terms of high fares. They saw there was no real demand from LCC, so they decided to enter the market with aa high fares as possible. If it wouldn't pan out, they would just pull out, since Slovenia is a tiny market. We really have no leverage to set thr conditions.

That is why I still think national carrier would have been a better choice. At least the money would have gone into our budget.

This is actually very bad news for LJU. It means that early morning departure to ZRH is gone.
