Wizz Air schedules new and discontinues select Skopje routes

Low cost carrier Wizz Air has scheduled the launch of three new routes from Skopje, after being awarded subsidies by the state in return for improving the country’s air connectivity, but has also removed five destinations from its network. The budget airline will commence three weekly operations from the Macedonian capital to Lyon on May 1, two weekly rotations to Barcelona from May 3, as well as a three weekly service to Stuttgart from September 29. Tickets are now available for purchase through the carrier’s website. On the other hand, Wizz Air has closed reservations between Skopje and Salzburg this week for next summer. The service was maintained twice weekly, while Bremen and Skavsta, which operated twice weekly in summer 2024, as well as Copenhagen and Cologne, which ran three weekly, will not be featured in the network next summer.

Commenting on its new routes out of Skopje, Wizz Air’s Managing Director, Roland Tischner, said, “These new routes from Skopje highlight our dedication to offering convenient and affordable travel options for our passengers. We are thrilled to diversify our network and link Skopje with popular destinations such as Barcelona, Lyon, and Stuttgart. These new connections will allow travellers to explore exciting new locations and embark on unforgettable adventures, while offering the chance for Western European tourists to discover the hidden gems of North Macedonia". The CEO of airport operator TAV Macedonia, Nejat Kurt, added, “At TAV Airports we are thrilled to announce the comeback of Barcelona as a leisure destination from Skopje Airport as of May 3, 2025, operated by Wizz Air, especially since it was the most desired route by our passengers. In addition to Barcelona, Wizz Air will launch Lyon and Stuttgart next year as new destinations from Skopje Airport. Through this expanded network, we are looking forward to offering greater convenience and enhancing connectivity for our passengers to the world".

Wizz Air last maintained services from Skopje to Barcelona in January 2022. It was due to inaugurate operations between the Macedonian capital and Stuttgart this year, which never materialised due to its ongoing fleet issues. On the other hand, Lyon has never been served from Skopje. Lyon Airport recently said it was targeting flights to the Macedonian capital. Based on the outcome of the Macedonian government’s recent airline subsidy tender, Wizz Air is still obligated to schedule a new route between Ohrid and Basel, while Flydubai is yet to put tickets on sale between Dubai and Skopje.

Wizz Air, which is the largest carrier in Macedonia, has significantly reduced its operations out of Skopje this year due to ongoing inspections of its aircraft engines, which has grounded a notable portion of its fleet. The carrier's CEO, Jozsef Varadi, recently said, "We have been in a very particular situation in the current year because some of our engines have been recalled by the engine manufacturers for inspection and, as a result, we have a significant portion of our fleet on the ground. Around 20% of our fleet is non-operational. So, out of the 225 aircraft that we have in our fleet, 45 aircraft are not operating because of these engine inspections now. They will come back over time but, at the moment, they are not operating. As a result, we had to make some cancellations, not only in Macedonia but across our entire network. This engine situation will stabilise. We are at the tipping point as we speak”. He added, “In 2025 we are expecting the business to grow 15 - 20% which is significant because right now we are carrying 63 million passengers a year. We would be looking at almost 75 million passengers to be carried next year so that will create opportunities for growth in Macedonia adding back some of the routes that have been cut and also looking at new routes to be added to the to the system”.

So new routes are being introduced but we are losing almost double the number of routes... Does not seem Wizz engine issues will be resolved next year.

Yes, seems like the only way they were able to open these new routes was by discontinuing others and freeing up capacity.

Given the constraints caused by the Pratt & Whitney engine inspections, this trade-off might be the only way for Wizz Air to maintain a presence in some markets while exploring new routes.

They make Wizz Air Abu Dhabi work because they need to (as the local authority threatened them to revoke their AOC after the first years of chaos they had). Just as they could make Skopje work (they could put any number of aircraft there out of the 227 they have) if they wanted to but they don't. It's always easier to blame it on the engine issue.
