Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport handled 1.438.713 passengers in 2024, representing an increase of 13.3% on the previous year, or an additional 168.331 travellers. The airport has reached 83.6% of the passenger numbers achieved during the pre-pandemic 2019 when flag carrier Adria Airways declared bankruptcy and 79% of 2018 figures, the last full year of the airline’s operations. During 2024, Ljubljana Airport welcomed new carriers including airBaltic, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Iberia, all of which applied for the state’s subsidies aimed at improving Slovenia’s connectivity.

DeleteGrowing 15% per year is good enough, we'll get back eventually.
I think LJU should work on having fewer seasonal routes. Copenhagen, Madrid, LHR, and Orly, for example, are all year-round routes (in my opinion at least) as these airports/destinations are relevant throughout the year. Strengthening existing year-round routes to have more capacity during winter would also be nice. And of course, they should be working on attract low-cost carriers.

DeleteNot exactly high speed, but direct rail line with 5 daily return trains should start later this year, and if successful, service could be doubled and eventually tripled in noumber of trains per day. ATM there are 4 daily trains but these are international trains. Speeds on the line are decent, 100-120kmph in Slovenia, 120-140kmph in Croatia. Increasing the speed in Slovenia won't be easy, in Croatia speed can be upped to 200kmph if there's need for such service.

DeleteThats exactly the problem Slovenia faces: Infrastructure. Too much is underdevelopped, especially train tracks, railways stations or hotel infrastructure.
Lets not forget SLO is soon 21 years!! EU member and not just this, it has the luck to be in short travel distance to economical power houses such as Germany and Northern Italy which is a benefit to their economy.
Slovenia desperately needs to vamp up their 3-5 * hotel infrastructure, especially in Bled, Kranjska Gora and the coast.
Ljubljana in this perpective is quite ok, especially considering that the Emonika project will bring two more international chain hotels to the city.
International hotel chains such as Accor, Hilton, Hyatt, IHG, Jumeirah, Kempinski, Mandarin Oriental, Marriott International, NH Group, Radisson, Shangri-La are important for each larger city or touristic hotspots as they increase visibility and places gain attractiveness. Not to forget that millions of people work with bonus points from these chains. Kranjska Gora, Bled and the Slovenian coast in total have just one hotel of these international chains! Thats by far too few. And not just this, too many hotels do not meet the expectations of international travellers. Best examples are the Grand Toplice Bled or the Vila Bled. Both have excellent locations but they are so outdated, u cant believe it. But guess what, both belong to the SLO government (companies controlled by SLO government). There is a tendency that the tourism marketing is improving, as well as more and more attractive smaller 2-4* hotels or apartments have been built or attractive locations such as the Vila Planinka Jezersko, Majerca Bohinj, Chalet Sofija Kranjska Gora, Milka Hotel Kranjska Gora, Triangle Boutique Hotel Kranjska Gora, Hotel Bohinj in Bohinj and Vila Muhr in Bohinj. They further should focus on promoting not just the country but more the region together with their counterparts in HU HR I and A, as the region itself, is definitely an attraction.
Admin, what's Transavia's capacity in Ljubljana? I thought they had more flights than Easyjet

ReplyDeleteGood for LJU. They are recovering. Adria business model was working becasue airpotrts as SKP, TIA, PRN and SJJ were very underdeveloped 8- 15 years ago. So on the long term it was an unsustainable business model. So it's not fair in my opinion to compare with 2019.
ReplyDeleteIf they add SAS flights to ARN, Iberia flights to MAD, Wizz flights to Tirana and Bucharest, and maybe BCN flights, together with year around LHR and CPH flights, it would be decent enough tbh.

Wizzair is flying already to Tirana and Bucharest from Trieste. W and C Slovenia is covered already. W Slovenia is closer to Trieste, C Slovenia is just a short car ride anyway, even if they are from C Slovenia they need a car for the airport. Slovenians are loving cars so part of E Slovenia is covered too. For foreigners rent a car or public, private transport.

ReplyDeleteIn period jan-nov 2024 from SKP - LJU - SKP W6 had 51.000 passengers. Between 90 to 95 % LF.
